I would like to introduce myself, Melanie Priestley, Chief Executive of St. Mary’s Academy Trust. I am proud to lead our nine primary schools, which are based throughout Barnsley. I am passionate about supporting all of our schools in order to make a real difference to our local communities and to help them thrive. At St. Mary’s Academy Trust we inspire all of our children to have high aspirations and encourage them to see opportunities; not barriers or obstacles. We deliver a broad and balanced curriculum that is tailored to meet the needs of our individual communities. We pride ourselves not only on high educational outcomes but on providing our children with a variety of experiences and opportunities, the resilience to face challenges and the skills to succeed. By enabling all of our children to realise that they have many choices open to them in life; we prepare them to step out into the world as responsible citizens with the Trust values and Christian ethos instilled within them. We believe our children can make a difference to society and our future. Our Trust does not stop at the school gate. It is our public duty to work alongside our local communities to ensure a better world for all. We have a collaborative approach to learning across our SMAT family and firmly believe that we all have a lot to learn from each other. We look after and support each other to improve in all aspects of what we do and provide people with the confidence, compassion and courage to succeed and be whoever they want to be. We work to instil a passion and pride in all those within our care – children, staff and families – for where they live and who they are. Our communities have many opportunities to offer us all. Our desire is to ignite a spark in all who work with us.

Plymouth

I would like to welcome you to Plymstock School. I am honoured and privileged to have the opportunity to lead such a vibrant, caring and hard working school community where students, staff and governors remain restless in their pursuit of excellence with the firm belief that better never stops! They simply aspire to be the very best they can be. Our mission is to empower young people, through education, to have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life and make a positive contribution to society. Our inclusive school culture is underpinned by the core values of compassion, collaboration and creativity. We believe that key to achieving our mission, is giving every single pupil a broad, balanced and ambitious academic curriculum, that has knowledge at its heart. The central place of knowledge acquisition within our curriculum is explicit and we provide rich and varied contexts for pupils to acquire, develop and apply this broad knowledge. Powerful knowledge takes a pupil beyond their own experience. It is knowledge that many will not have access to at home, amongst their friends or in the communities in which they live. We are all the inheritors of the great ideas, writings and discoveries of the past and the young people of Plymouth have a right to learn this knowledge. By learning our curriculum, we know that our pupils will be provided with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life and make that positive contribution to society. We take great pride that we continue to support every single pupil to successfully complete their education at Plymstock School in which it allows them to access the opportunities and make informed choices to pursue their personal and career aspirations. This includes continuing with their education, employment or training. This is also true at the highest academic level and we are delighted to frequently have pupils gain places at both Oxford and Cambridge University.

London

Our father Tom Johnson started Awards Ltd. in 1977 in the dining room of his house in Urbana IL where he produced engraved products such as plaques, signs and awards. In 1982 he moved Awards Ltd. to Champaign, IL, where he set up shop in the loft of his new home, adding promotional items to his line of products. In 1989 Tom acquired a similar business called Signmaster which made signs, name tags, and rubber stamps. He merged Awards Ltd with Signmaster operation and moved the business to Henson Place in Champaign, where Awards Ltd. is still located today. He then decided to bring on his two sons Glenn and Kenny to help with the additional production efforts needed to produce these new products. Glenn and Kenny took over most of the production side of the business, and although Tom still kept his hands busy with some production work, he focused primarily on promotional products and the business side of things. In 1996 Glenn and Kenny took over managemnt of the business, overseeing all aspects of production, bookkeeping and marketing. In 2000 Tom decided to retire paving the way for Glenn and Kenny to take over ownership of the business. Tom still came to work every day, helping with production, but the thing he liked doing the most was working on the computer setting up artwork for promotional products and other production items. Tom has since retired completely, but he still stops by every day to say hi. He will be 86 years young on May 29, 2017. Currently it is just the two of us (Glenn and Kenny) and our loyal co-worker Sarah who is a very hard worker and in the process of learning all aspects of our business. Sarah has been with us for a little over a 3 years now. We are still going strong after 40 years in business! Awards Ltd, where ideas are unlimited!

England

Welcome to The Education Partnership. Please take a look around our website and see what we can offer you. Bill is chairman of The Education Partnership, which has for the past twenty years provided a truly comprehensive range of governance and compliance expertise to schools, colleges, and outdoor education activity centres. He was previously a Head Teacher of all-age boarding and day schools in the maintained and independent sectors, including those for children with complex learning and behavioural needs. Bill works with proprietors and Head Teachers in preparation for and following up inspections by Ofsted (Education and Social Care) and ISI (Regulatory Compliance and Education Quality). His expertise in this area covers NMS, RSS, dual registration, initial registration, final registration and material change. Bill also works with schools judged as “inadequate” by Ofsted or “unsatisfactory” by ISI, helping them to achieve “good”, “outstanding” and “excellent” Ofsted or ISI outcomes. Bill is approached by an increasing number of proprietors, chairs of trustees and headteachers, who find themselves in challenging circumstances. This includes schools that have received a warning notice from the Department for Education due to their failure to meet the Independent School Standards Regulations (ISSR) and/or the National Minimum Standards (NMS) for boarding and residential special schools. Consistently, these schools see improvements at subsequent inspections. Currently, Bill is undertaking a longitudinal study of independent proprietorial schools, examining the governance implications of compliance and external inspection outcomes. To this end, we are looking for proprietorial schools in England for whom we could undertake a free of charge one-day compliance health check in return for participating in a confidential semi-structured interview on this subject at the end of the day. If you would be interested in taking up this offer, or would like a PDF of the second edition of this research, please contact billbrown@edpa.org.uk
