All Sixth Form students study Core RE across their two year career with us and complete the Extended Project, applying Catholic Social Teaching to a moral and ethical issue of their choice. Excellent pastoral care is provided by experienced tutors who advise, encourage and monitor student progress. The Duke of Edinburgh Award remains a strong feature of our school into the Sixth Form. During May half-term, Sixth Form students join the annual Diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes to care for and assist the sick and disabled pilgrims. The Latin motto of our college is Pro Petri Fide which means For the Love of Peter. Jesus made Saint Peter the leader of the Apostles and it was on Saint Peter’s faith that Jesus said he would build his Church, Bishop Milner Catholic College is part of this Church and our faith is indeed the faith of Peter. Therefore, our college is committed to offering Christian love and care to each person within it irrespective of their faith background. As such, everyone is valued as a gift from God and treated with utmost respect. Our History Up to 1960 there was no secondary school in Dudley for Roman Catholic children. At the end of 1956 approval was given to build a three storey Roman Catholic secondary school for 400 students. Construction of Bishop Milner Catholic School began September 1957. The build cost of this new school was estimated at around £191,000, it was to include a gymnasium, science and art rooms, a library and a large assembly hall. As the school buildings neared completion, it was decided that the school would be named after Bishop John Milner, the vicar Apostolic of the Midlands. The official opening took place on 21st September 1960 and was conducted by the Most Rev. Francis Grimshaw, Archbishop of Birmingham. There have been many changes to the original building over the years. In 1963 a three floor extension was added to the main building along with a new dining hall. In September 1981 a “Secretary’s” block was also opened. In September 1994 a new large two storey building was built, which included drama and dance studios. In 2003 construction was well underway of what was to become the Bishop Milner Catholic College of today , with multiple ICT suites, Learning Resource Centre, study areas and many new class rooms to replace the 1960s buildings.

Teaching has always been Lian’s passion. At the age of 18 Lian started teaching dance which developed into establishing her own highly successful dance school Learning Curves Dance which she ran for 20 years. Lian has had numerous highlights during her teaching career from choreographing team performances at London theatres including Her Majesty’s Theatre, Sadler’s Wells and The Royal Albert Hall and Birmingham performance venues such as the NEC and the Symphony Hall. She has also travelled with her students overseas to Europe and Asia performing at Disneyland Paris and Beijing Theatre, China. Lian has trained over 500 students for team performances, prepared over 3000 students for 32 IDTA examination sessions and received Freestyle Scholarship Awards nominations for 5 professional candidates and 18 amateur students. She has judged at numerous ADFP Freestyle Dance Competitions, including the prestigious international Disco Kid Competition at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Lian was honoured to lecture for the IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association), hosting amateur and professional workshops. She has produced, directed and choreographed over 16 theatre shows, raised over £10,000 for charity, formed the successful Performing Arts Project with sister school StarStruck Performing Arts Academy, taught GCSE dance at Arden School, cultivated successful relationships and taught classes in over 16 Primary and Secondary Schools in Solihull and Warwickshire and launched a second Dance School in Southam, Warwickshire. After further professional development and with a keen interest in anatomy and physiology, Lian qualified to train candidates to professional teacher level. To date she has trained 26 individuals to professional dance teacher status, 5 of whom have received IDTA Scholarship nominations and 1 student who has gained the 2020 John Dilworth Scholarship in the Freestyle category. Now Lian has added yoga to her long list of qualifications and is a Yoga Alliance Professional 250 hour qualified Teacher. Lian enjoys teaching Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga. Lian successfully teaches online and face to face classes. Yoga and dance complement each other beautifully and through her training Lian can bring elements of each discipline to enhance her teaching.

I have been teaching Italian for over ten years privately and for colleges. I have taught Italian at the Brasshouse language centre in Birmingham, at North Warwickshire & Hinckley College and South Staffordshire College as well as delivering training for companies such as EXD Ltd. in Coventry, Arlani in Burton, Redrock in Birmingham and for private groups, reaching areas in the West Midlands, from Birmingham to Coventry, Warwick to Lichfield and Solihull. ITALIAN LANGUAGE CULTURE AND COOKING WORKSHOPS- ABOUT ME I grew up in a small village in a traditional Neapolitan family where we prepared local and classical Italian dishes, growing and preserving most of the food we ate. Preparing pasta or gnocchi for our Sunday lunch was a family get together event! We all helped and learned how to make things in a traditional way. During the major festivities such as Christmas and Easter the food preparation took weeks and families and friends exchanged their creations: Struffoli, Panettone and Pandoro at Christmas; Pastiera, Tortano or Casatiello at Easter; for Carnival we made Chiacchiere, and for father’s days Zeppole. There were times when we all went to zia’s house to cook pizza and bread in her stone oven… every occasion was special and gave us an excuse to prepare a traditional dish. Therefore, my love for the food and food preparation grew thanks to the area I was born and my family’s customs. When later I travelled as a student, I exchanged recipes with other people and grandmas from Sicily, Puglia and Tuscany. Therefore, the Italian cooking workshop is an opportunity for me to share with you, in my kitchen, what I have learned, and recreate together an authentic Italian experience.

Sholfins Swim School CIC is a not-for-profit company born from a passion and love for swimming. We are extremely passionate about our community. Our aim is to try and remove as many barriers as possible, preventing our community of Redditch from learning to swim. The team at Sholfins recognise that due to the pandemic there has been a huge impact on children having access to water in their early years. A number of primary/middle schools have also been unable to provide this life skill to their pupils prior to the pandemic for several different reasons, therefore, falling short of the national curriculum requirements, through no fault of their own. Swimming and water safety has been a statutory element of the national curriculum for physical education in England since 1994. This means that every 11-year-old child should leave primary/middle school with the skills to keep themselves safe. Swimming lessons provide all children with vital skills to help with survival and this is no different for children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND). By 2025, over 780,000 children with SEND will be in the education system. However, inequalities in the ability of schools and teachers to offer high quality opportunities for them to participate in PE, School Sport or Physical Activity still exist, with disabled young people twice as likely to be physically inactive as non-disabled people. The focus on the new revised Ofsted inspection framework is also an area of consideration for schools to bare in mind. At Sholfins we believe everyone should have the opportunity to learn to swim. All of our instructors are Level 2, Swim England qualified and have RLSS Lifeguard, First Aid and Safeguarding Qualifications. The team are passionate about teaching and ensure that each child is given the support and encouragement to become water confident no matter what age. We are registered with Swim England and follow the learn to swim programme and the School Swimming and Water Safety charter.
