We are based at Ocean Studios in Royal William Yard, Plymouth, Devon. Please read on for more details. Walking - head straight on when you enter RWY, go past the green on the left, then past the marina on your right, the Make at 140 shop is just on the left after the current black hoarding. If you see a red phone box you have gone past the shop entrance. Driving - Enter Royal William Yard, follow their one way system, so turn left just after you enter. Follow the one way all the way around the yard until you come back around towards the entrance/exit. Look for a red phone box on your right hand side before the water on your left. We are just after the phone box on the right hand side. Opposite the Restaurant The Clubhouse. Parking - If you need to park you can park all the way along the back wall, kind of in the middle and you can cut through the side road to Make. Or drive round towards the red phone box and before the phone box turn right into a stone gate, turn immediately right into the garage and either park there if space or through to the other side where there is lots of room.

I am a freelance designer-maker, applied artist, crafts-woman, whatever you want to call me – I stitch stuff by hand; fabric, metal, porcelain, leather, vitreous enamel.. . My work is various, it depends whether I am working for myself, to commission or collaborating with other artists. But whatever I do is slow to make; detailed hand stitching in any material whether in silk, linen, wool or wire takes time, consequently my work is also slow to evolve. I decided to show on this site what I do, who I am work with, how I work and also how I think. I want to show the work behind HER WORK not just the finished things. The journey from the first idea, searching, researching, drawing, sampling and eventually making the finished piece. You will be able to watch my work progress, or not; maybe by seeing this record people will come to value making that is manufactured by hand, heart and eye. In May 2010 I developed – Heart Space Studios ( from my yoga practice “Put your Hands in your Heart Space”) and for 5 years it was a space in Bristol England for all things textile. The activities at the studios can still be viewed – I closed the studio workshops in 2015 – the classes remain on this site as part of the blog, they contain many of my most popular posts….. Heart Space Studios continues as a group of makers who develop projects primarily for publishing companies. Most notably we work with designer Kaffe Fassett in the production of his patchwork quilt books and other fabrics.

Artist Profile : Neo-Japonism artist and calligrapher RIE TAKEDA ( Hokkaido / Japan ) Rie started practicing calligraphy at the age of five under the creative supervision of her grandmother, a distinguished “GAYU-Ryu” calligrapher. Later she completed the master of the Gayu calligraphy school. It laid a solid foundation for her development of the SUMIE technique in calligraphic design. Following her art and design studies in Sapporo and London, Rie’s inspiration and enthusiasm for new forms of art, paired with her knowledge of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and design, led her to discover the Neo-Japonism style. The artist’s past 15 years of living in Europe have been incredibly creatively productive. As well as Neo-Japonism painting, Rie produces calligraphy works, Washi paper/Vintage kimono collages, illustrations and works in Body-Art. Rie works on several projects, collaborations and exhibitions - both in Europe and Japan.
