Mission Gallery is one of the most inspiring spaces in Wales for the contemporary arts. A unique, architecturally beautiful space, the building is a rich resource for the local and wider community providing artists at all levels and experience, opportunities to display and make work while developing our audiences enjoyment, understanding and knowledge of art. Founded by artists in 1977 as ‘Swansea Arts Workshop Gallery’, Mission Gallery has since developed a national and international reputation for presenting dynamic and distinctive programming. Boasting a proud forty year history of delivery and a strong reputation for supporting and nurturing artists, Mission Gallery has taken artistic risks; showing ambitious, diverse work by established and emerging artists across all disciplines, from Wales and beyond. Mission Gallery has a thriving Learning and Participation Programme aimed at all ages and abilities, building strong and meaningful cultural partnerships within artistic and education institutions. Mission Gallery is proud of the important collaborations, projects and exchanges developed with cultural organisations in New York and Venice, building our international work through programming, partnerships and residencies . Housed in a Grade II listed building in Swansea’s Maritime Quarter, Mission Gallery began its existence as a voluntary artist run body, evolving into a professional organisation funded by Arts Council of Wales in 2003. Governed by a voluntary board of directors, the management, programming and running is maintained by a small and dedicated team of staff and volunteers. Mission Gallery has a long track record of successfully forging meaningful and sustainable partnerships across the city, in particular with Swansea College of Art who are key partners.

Everyone knows how much learning something new helps ones outlook. This is especialy true with learning new creative skills. Wooburn Craft School Ltd. delivers short classes in a variety of craft and creative skills including: Furniture Restoration, Upholstery, Jewellery Making, Wood Working and Wood Carving. We also offer courses in Rush Seating, Caning, and a number of weekday courses as well as a craft clubs. New classes are being added all the time, so please check back with us soon on a regular bases. All of our tutors are seasoned professionals with years of experience both in the practice of their craft and in teaching their skills to others. Award-winner Sima Vaziry’s work has been recognised by the British Museum for whom she has created several commercial jewellery collections and her jewellery is part of the core range at the British Museum luxury shop. Sima came into jewellery making as a second career from a graphic design background, after re-training, she launched her own business. It wasn’t long before her work was picked up by the British Museum and her first collection for them became one of their most popular and best selling ranges. To date, Sima has designed six collections for the British Museum, and has also received enquiries from the Louvre in Paris. Her award winning piece was used on the cover of a new book, “Silversmithing for Jewelry Makers”. Her success has been recognised in the form of press, TV and radio appearances including Sky TV and BBC Persia as well as BBC London radio. Her jewellery designs and personal story have been featured in “Woman & Home”, “Tatler” online and in all the main trade magazines. Sima works from her shop at the OXO Tower, where she continues to make her collections, create bespoke items for private clients and supply the British Museum. She also passes on her knowledge through teaching and delivering talks in and around London.

Kelvin J. Birk produces jewellery as well as larger objects, mainly in silver and gold with all types of gemstones. Within his work he crushes precious gemstones and glues them back together, sometimes in a random uncontrolled shape, other times in a more controlled manner and then combines these stones with jewellery pieces or objects in precious metal. Within his work he is consciously disregarding what is traditionally considered precious. Birk revels in a lack of control, allows chaos to take over and the nature of the precious materials to dictate the final outcome of the pieces. His collection is constantly developing and through different creative processes new pieces emerge all the time, ensuring that no two are identical. Like the experiences of personal life, there is always destruction and loss yet out of these processes come new things and new orders. Kelvin J. Birk’s jewellery illustrates this theme of chaos and re-creation. There is always order in chaos, we lose things and we gain things. It is a constant. After Graduating in Goldsmithing and jewellery making at the Berufsfachschule fuer Glas und Schmuck, Germany, Kelvin J. Birk took his MA in Silversmithing and Jewellery (awarded with distinction) from the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art in London, UK (1997). Kelvin exhibited at various fairs and exhibitions in Great Britain, Europe, the USA, China and Taiwan. His work won him several prizes and awards and he received several grants from different funding bodies. His work has been featured in numerous magazines, newspapers and in a range of jewellery and design books. Kelvin is available for consultations and happy to discuss special commissions and bespoke pieces. He became a specialist in up-cycling old jewellery, where he recycles your unworn jewellery into a stunning new wearable piece of jewellery.

After gaining her Arts Degree from Sheffield City Polytechnic, Janet set up her silversmithing business in London where she was based for ten years. She moved to Berkshire where she has stayed, initially becoming Jeweller in Residence at South Hill Park Arts Centre and now teaching her own classes in Woodley. She has been making and teaching jewellery for over 40 years and has had the pleasure of seeing her students enjoy learning about jewellery making and some of her students have chosen to go on to run their own jewellery business. Her designs concentrate on form and technique. Flow, texture and carving informs most of her work. She likes her work to be timeless, enhance the body and come to life when worn by the owner. Her work continues to be exhibited here in Britain and abroad, has featured in a variety of publications including Vogue and is part of the contemporary jewellery collection at the Dallas Museum of Art, USA.
