<p>The prospect maturation process, from a lead to a drillable prospect, is at the heart of the exploration business. This 5 full day course will cover all aspects of the prospect maturation process: play understanding in the context of regional geological understanding, detailed prospect evaluation; realistic risk &amp; volume assessment consistent with the play understanding and prospect details, and an introduction to exploration economics.</p>
<p>Throughout the course, there is a strong focus on pragmatic (geo)logical approach for assessing those aspects that are input parameters for a meaningful assessment of prospect risks and volumes, with emphasis on a balanced integration of contributions from different sub-surface disciplines. Many examples from basins from around the world are used to illustrate how traps, reservoirs, seals and charge occur in different basin settings.</p>
<p><strong>Specifics topics that will be discussed include the following:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>The statistical fundamentals for risk and volume assessment will be presented, with practical exercises for understanding the results of a risk &amp; volume assessment as they are displayed in expectation curves.</li>
<li>The difference between risk and uncertainty.</li>
<li>A full discussion of the essential requirements for a working petroleum system: Trap, reservoir, seal and charge.</li>
<li>Examples of how traps, reservoirs, seals and charge work in different basin types around the globe and in Australian basins.</li>
<li>Exercises and guidelines for estimating uncertainties for prospect parameters, including advice for deciding which distribution type to use, and how to constrain those distributions for meaningful uncertainty ranges (setting minimum most likely and maximum values). Particular emphasis will be given to estimating hydrocarbon column lengths with their associated uncertainties in undrilled prospects.</li>
<li>Prospects and plays: The value of play maps and how these should be used for assessment of prospect risks and for ranking of prospects within a play.</li>
<li>Calculating volume ranges for prospects.</li>
<li>Calculating volumes for groups of prospects; how to add risked prospect volumes for a statistically correct representation of the volume promise of a portfolio of prospects.</li>
<li>Geophysical evidence: Incorporating geophysical evidence (DHIs) consistently and realistically in a risk assessment. An understandable and geology-based workflow, consistent with Bayes theorem, will be presented.</li>

<p>Your expert course leader has a PhD in Geology from the University of Utrecht. He worked for 31 years (1979 -2010) with Shell as an exploration geologist in a variety of functions across the globe. As Principle Technical Expert, he was responsible for ensuring that Risk &amp; Volume assessments were carried out consistently and correctly in all of Shell's exploration units.</p>
<p>In this capacity, he led and participated in countless prospect review sessions and developed and conducted a successful in-house course on Risks &amp; Volume assessment. As manager of the Exploration Excellence Team, he performed in depth analysis of basins and plays and provided advice on exploration opportunities to senior management. Together with his team, he visited most of Shell's exploration offices, working hands-on with Shell's local exploration teams to generate new play and prospect ideas and to suggest evaluation techniques and technologies to apply.</p>
<p>In 2010, he was appointed as extraordinary professor Regional and Petroleum Geology at the VU university of Amsterdam and in 2012 also at the University of Utrecht. He was visiting professor at the University of Malaya (Malaysia).</p>
<p>Through his own consultancy, as of 2010, he provides advice on exploration activities to several companies and is regularly invited to carry out technical reviews. Activities cover all continents and include Portfolio Reviews, Prospect assessment, Play-based Exploration, and Geothermal activities.</p>

<p>This 5 full-day course will focus on geological fundamentals: how different basin types differ in subsidence mechanisms, basin cycles, heat flow through time, depositional systems, structural styles and their type of petroleum systems. This will allow participants to make realistic interpretations in new areas; interpretations that are consistent with the specific basin type and to be expected depositional systems and structural styles. </p>
<p>In addition, through simple paper-based exercises, the course will provide background and understanding of how some of the typical PBE products are made: creaming curves, Field-size plots and Yet-to-find. Finally, the essentials of commercial assessments will be covered.</p>

This 5-day training course covers the principles and practices of directional drilling, calculations and planning for directional and horizontal wells. Specific problems associated with directional and horizontal drilling such as torque, drag, hole cleaning, logging and bottom hole assembly design, are included. The use of downhole motors, rotating and non-rotating steerable systems as well as the conventional rotary applications will be explained. Students will learn to design and evaluate a horizontal well based on the objectives for that well. Furthermore the students will get the basics of multilateral wells.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">Additionally the participants will become familiar with tools and techniques used in surveying a directional or horizontal well. The last part of the course includes an exercise where the students have to drill a pre-planned well on a computer simulator. font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;"><strong fr-original-style="" style="font-weight: 700; box-sizing: border-box;">The Application of the Drilling Simulator</strong><br fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">This simulator allows the students to put the theory in practice, without the expensive &ldquo;on-the-job-training&rdquo;. The software simulates a conventional rotary rig, equipped with two National 12P160 mud pumps and a complete mud treatment system. All required drilling equipment such as drill bits, drill pipe, drill collars, survey systems, downhole motors are available. The student will have to analyse the planned well and decide what type of assembly to use for the section to be drilled. This can be a conventional rotary assembly, a motor and a bent sub, a steerable system and even medium radius tools. The student will have to make up a correct BHA, run it in the hole, take a survey (with MWD or with gyro or single shot), orient his assembly and start drilling.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">As in real life and when using an MWD, the student can keep track of the tool face orientation and the hole direction together with the inclination. The student can stop drilling at any time to orient or to take a survey. At regular intervals the student will take a survey, the computer calculates the data and the student has to plot the result on the well plan, which the student will receive in an A0 format. The software will keep track of the drilling cost and the drilling time. At the end of the exercise the results of the different groups will be compared.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">The training instructor relies on a highly interactive training method to enhance the learning process. This method ensures that all participants gain a complete understanding of all the topics covered. He was involved in leading the Directional Drilling training courses for Shell E&amp;P in the Netherlands for over 25 years. He has also been actively engaged as a consultant for NIRAS, EDS, Gaz de France , Neddrill, Maersk, Crosco, ADCO, Saudi Aramco and Santos. Prior to his current consulting and training role, he was the International Training Manager for Smith International (now part of Schlumberger) responsible for technical training in all aspects of drilling engineering for personnel in the Eastern Hemisphere.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">He was also responsible in setting-up the International Training Centre in Heerhugowaard. From 1986 &ndash; 1992, he was the Operations and Field Service manager for Smith International. His team drilled the first long reach records in the Danish sector of the North Sea. <p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">This 3-days training will provide a comprehensive review of integrity of wells exposed to carbon dioxide (CO2) in the context of Carbon Capture Utilization for enhanced oil recovery and Storage (CCUS). CO2 geological storage is a proven technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from sources such as coal power plants, cement kilns and steel mills. Wells are widely considered the most critical containment element, especially older wells that are not used to inject CO2 or monitor the plume evolution in the storage reservoir. The main reason for this perceived risk is the high corrosion rate of carbon steel when exposed to wet CO2, and the tendency of Portland cement to react with the gas.</p>
<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">The training course advanced contents build on 15 years&#39; experience in carbon storage, both in the development and deployment of technologies. First-hand, in-depth knowledge of the subject will allow us to debunk myths and focus on the real challenges of wells encountering CO2.</p>

Since 2018 he is program chair of the Well Integrity Technical Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). He is also author or co-author of 31 technical papers, a book chapter on CO2 geological storage and 7 patent applications. He delivers training on well integrity, plug and abandonment, asset integrity, risk management and QHSE across the Eastern Hemisphere, and carries out active research on harnessing geological barriers, modeling leaks through cement, and quantifying methane emissions from oil &amp; gas wells. He has extensive expertise in: Well integrity, cementing, corrosion, upstream oil &amp; gas (drilling, completion), carbon capture and storage, mathematical modeling, risk management, reliability, HSSE (health/safety/security/environment), asset integrity, management systems, sustainable development, project management, portfolio management, training, and technology development and innovation.
