I trained as a Careers Adviser in 2007-8 after a long career working in the charity sector in a range of roles including managing a Volunteer Centre, working with community groups, managing volunteers and recruiting learners to courses run in the community. Some of my more unusual jobs have involved working in a Youth Hostel in the Yorkshire Dales, working on a sheep farm for two years in Australia and being a Tour Guide in a monastery. Being a Careers Adviser has been a great way of combining my two main passions – helping people achieve their goals and researching and disseminating information. An optimist by nature, I believe that everyone has skills, talents and abilities. Sometimes individuals need help uncovering these and with communicating them clearly to employers or with working out their next step on their career journey. I have certainly benefitted myself over the years from the support of various career professionals. Between 2013 – 2017 I was employed as a Careers Adviser delivering a national contract for adults seeking careers advice. Whilst I loved the work I became increasingly frustrated by the limitations of the contract which prevented many clients getting what they really needed support with. I realised the only way to be able to provide an excellent client-centred service was by providing it myself! And so I launched my own business. For your peace of mind I have Professional Indemnity Insurance and am a member of the national Career Development Institute (CDI). As a Registered Professional on the CDI register I am required to carry out 25 hours per year of Continuous Professional Development. I’m really interested in being the Best Career Consultant I can be so I regularly attend training and information events in order to develop my skills and knowledge.

Since then we have supported thousands of people on their journeys to more independence We support adults and young people with autism, learning disabilities, mental health conditions and complex needs We were created by a group of parents in 1986 who were looking for the very best support for their children who were about to leave a specialist school. Once they reached 17, they found there was little or no support. Coming together they established Autism Plus in the market town of Thorne, near Doncaster to provide person centred support in residential living, and learning for adults and young people with autism and learning disabilities. The belief set by our founding parents, to empower more people to live independent, fulfilling lives remains our focus today. Today, as a leading Yorkshire charity we are empowering more people every day to achieve more than they had dared to dream was possible. We employ over 450 people across the north of England in care support services, employment support and social enterprise businesses. Choice Choice is central to our vision. The story of The Elm Foundation began in 1985, which was when we launched our charity under the name of North Derbyshire Women’s Aid. Our aim in the mid-eighties was exactly the same as it is today: to provide a range of services and much-needed support to any man, woman or child affected by domestic abuse. The organisation went on to be known as Derbyshire Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse Services (DDVSAS) before relaunching as The Elm Foundation in 2018.

The journey began in 1999 above a supermarket in Doncaster’s busy market place, with only 4 staff and 18 learners, the Director; Diane Logan wanted to create a training organisation that was passionate about the Hair and Beauty Industry and high quality training, but also passionate about its learners! Twenty years later they offer places annually to 200 applicants for Traineeship, Apprenticeship and Advanced Learner Loan provision. They have two state of the art training centres in Rotherham and Doncaster and are supported by over 100 local Employers who offer to support our young people through giving work placements or by employing our Apprentices.
