<p>Gas well performance is dictated by the combination of inflow and outflow performance. The outflow performance of any gas well is at risk as soon as the gas rate becomes insufficient to lift the associated liquid water and condensate to surface. This condition is referred to as liquid loading and invariably causes intermittent production and significant loss of well capacity and reserves.</p>
<p>Liquid loading can be mitigated by different types of gas well deliquification such as compression, velocity string, plunger lift, foam-assisted lift, gas lift and downhole pump. This 5 full-day course will first show how to predict and recognize liquid loading. Next, it will describe how to select, design, install and operate the best sequence of deliquification measures. It will also consider deliquification in the presence of other production threats such as water production and halite blockage. These topics will be illustrated by an abundance of field examples and case studies.</p>
<p><strong>The participants will be completing a case study during the training. This case study is preferably based on their own relevant data set. If no such data is available, an external data set will be provided instead.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Prerequisites skills:</strong></p>
<p>It is necessary for the participants to have a basic knowledge of petroleum engineering and gas well performance.</p>

<p>Gas wells are the most uncertain hence critical component of any gas production system. A successful gas project relies on a reliable forecast of gas well production and on timely implementation of measures that restore, sustain and improve gas well capacity, and maximize reserves. This 5-day course provides the skills to understand and analyze (changes in) gas well performance, and to select and design those remedial measures. It addresses all four gas well components i.e. reservoir performance, inflow performance, outflow performance and surface performance, individually and combined.</p>
<p>In depletion-drive reservoirs, the gas well outflow performance becomes inevitably compromised as the reservoir pressure depletes and the gas rate becomes insufficient to lift liquid water and condensate to surface. This condition is referred to as liquid loading and causes significant loss of well capacity and reserves. This 5-day course provides the means to recognize and predict liquid loading, introduces the deliquification techniques that mitigate liquid loading, and then teaches how to select, design, install and operate the optimum suite of deliquification measures.</p>

In 1995, he moved into completion design. Since then, he has designed many platform and sub-sea completions, often travelling to the rig site to oversee the installation. In addition to his day-to-day work as a completion engineer, he regularly teaches completion and well intervention courses all over the world. He is also the author of the book, Well Control for Completions and Interventions, Gulf Publishing - April 2018. He has also appeared as an expert witness ant the International Court of Arbitration.</p>

Burning fossil fuels for energy is a major source of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. <p>He is an SPE Distinguished Lecturer (DL) and has served as DL for several other professional organisations, including, AAPG, IPA and PESA. He is currently a Professor of Petroleum Geology and Engineering at the Australian School of Petroleum, University of Adelaide. He holds the South Australia State Chair in Carbon Capture &amp; Storage (CCS) and is also presently Distinguished Scientist of the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC), having served earlier as the Storage Program Manager and Chief Scientist.</p>
<p>Your second expert course leader has a wide and deep knowledge of major capture technologies: solvent, membrane and adsorption based technologies and has developed pathways for retrofitting CO<sub>2</sub> capture and storage (CCS) to fossil fuel-based power plants. He has been actively engaged in Post-combustion capture project management and demonstration projects in Victoria's Latrobe Valley on CO<sub>2</sub> capture and hydrogen production, and on CO<sub>2</sub> capture using membrane contactor technology.</p>
<p>He has led various feasibility studies for the Asian Development Bank on CO<sub>2</sub> Capture at Indian Oil Corporation's refineries, for JPOWER on hydrogen production from Victorian brown coal and for Kawasaki on incorporation of CCS in hydrogen production from fossil fuel. He has authored multiple peer reviewed journal articles, co-authored various confidential reports on CO<sub>2</sub> capture, utilization and hydrogen production and utility, and has presented his work at various conferences, symposiums and seminars. <h2><strong>About this Training Course</strong> </h2>
<p>Geomechanical evaluations are about the assessment of deformations and failure in the subsurface due to oil &amp; gas production, geothermal operations, CO<sub>2</sub> storage and other operations. All geomechanical evaluations include four types of modelling assumptions, which will be systematically addressed in this training, namely:</p>
<p>1.      Geometrical modelling assumption: Impact of structural styles on initial stress and stress redistribution due to operations</p>
<p>2.      Formation (or constitutive) behaviour: Linear elastic and non-linear behaviour, associated models and their parameters, and methods how to constrain these using</p>
<p>3.      Initial stress: Relation with structural setting and methods to quantify the in-situ stress condition</p>
<p>4.      Loading conditions: Changes in pore pressure and temperature on wellbore and field scale</p>
<p>This 5 full-day course starts with the determination of the stresses in the earth, the impact of different structural styles, salt bodies, faulting and folding on the orientation of the three main principal stress components. Different (field) data sources will be discussed to constrain their magnitude, while exercises will be made to gain hands-on experience.</p>
<p>Subsequently, the concepts of stress and strain will be discussed, linear elasticity, total and effective stress and poro-elasticity in 1D, 2D and 3D, as well as thermal expansion. Participants will be able to construct and interpret a Mohr-circles. Also, different failure mechanisms and associated models (plastic, viscous) will be discussed. All these concepts apply on a material point level.</p>
<p>Next, geomechanics on the wellbore scale is addressed, starting with the stress distribution around the wellbore (Kirsch equations). The impact of mudweight on shear and tensile failure (fracturing) will be calculated, and participants will be able to determine the mudweight window stable drilling operations, while considering well deviation and the use of oil-based and water-based muds (pore pressure penetration). Fracturing conditions and fracture propagation will be addressed.</p>
<p>Field-scale geomechanics is addressed on the fourth day, focussing on building a 3D geomechanical model that is fit-for-purpose (focussing on the risks that need evaluation). Here, geological interpretation (layering), initial stress and formation property estimation (from petrophysical logs and lab experiments) as well as determining the loading conditions come together.</p>
<p>The course is concluded with interpretation of the field-wide geomechanical response to reservoir depletion with special attention to reservoir compaction &amp; subsidence, well failure and fault reactivation &amp; induced seismicity. Special attention is paid to uncertainties and formulating advice that impacts decision-making during development and production stages of a project.</p>

He was responsible for the Geomechanical competence framework, and associated virtual and classroom training programme in Shell for the last 10 years. He served as one of the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on geomechanics, provided Technical Assurance to many risk assessments, and is a co-author of Shell's global minimun standard on top-seal integry and containment. He has a MSc and PhD in Civil Engineering and computational mechanics from Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands.</p>

<h2><strong>About this Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT)</strong></h2>
<p>Governments, regulators and energy companies are pursuing CO<sub>2</sub> storage technologies to meet their net-zero carbon commitments as well as targets set by the international Paris Agreement on climate change. For successfully executing Carbon Capture &amp; Storage (CCS) projects, various technical, operational, economic and environmental risks and associated stakeholders need to be managed.</p>
<p>In this <strong>5 half-day Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) course</strong>, the methods for managing risk in CCS projects are addressed <u>with a focus on CO<sub>2 </sub>injection and storage.</u> The VILT course will also demonstrate how to assess storage capacity of a potential CO<sub>2</sub> storage reservoir, model framing techniques, and well injectivity issues related to CO<sub>2</sub> injection. The potential leak paths will be discussed such as reservoir seals, leakage along faults and aspects of well integrity. In the VILT course, the design of a monitoring programme will also be discussed. The VILT course will be supported by various case studies.</p>

<p><strong>Trainer 1:</strong></p>
<p>Your expert course leader has more than 36 years of experience in the oil &amp; gas industry with Shell. He gained broad experience in petroleum engineering, with expertise in integrated production systems from subsurface, wells and surface. He has had assignments in Production Technology, R&amp;D, Production Chemistry, Rock Mechanics and Reservoir Engineering cEOR, with a proven track record in technology screening, development and deployment, field development planning, conceptual well design and Production System Optimization (PSO) of gas and oil fields as well as preparing Well, Reservoir &amp; Facility Management (WRFM) strategies and plans. He had also worked on assignments in NAM and did fieldwork in Oman, Gabon and Shell Nigeria. He is a skilled workshop facilitator. He discovered his passion for teaching following an assignment in Shell Learning. During his time in Shell, he developed and taught technical courses to Shell professionals via blended learning.</p>
<p><strong>Trainer 2:</strong></p>
<p>Your second expert course leader has over 30 years of experience identifying, assessing and mitigating technical risks with Shell. The main focal point of his experience is in subsurface and Geomechanical risks. He is the the founding father of various innovations in how we assess risks by tool development (for bore hole stability, 3D geomechanical field evaluations and probabilistic assessment). He also developed an eye for people motivation, change management and facilitation. He was also responsible for the Geomechanical competence framework, and associated virtual and classroom training programme in Shell for 10 years.</p>

<p>Your third expert course leader has more than 30 years of experience in Shell, focusing on research and development in drilling and offshore systems. His areas of expertise is in project management, finance, business planning, investment, development studies and economics models. In 2021, he worked on a project that looked into the economic evaluation of P18A field complex for CO<sub>2</sub> storage. He has an MSc in Mechanical Engineering (M.E.) TU Delft Netherlands (Hons) and a baccalaureate from Erasmus University Rotterdam.</p>
