I am extremely proud to be leading the staff and pupils at Safe Start School towards achieving their personal and professional goals. Having worked with vulnerable young people since my early career I see it my mission to ensure all young people who attend Safe Start are given the educational tools any student in mainstream provisions are provided with. It is my goal to ensure we support our students to transition from requiring guidance with life skills to making independent decisions to becoming successful adults. I lead with a high expectation of delivering Quality First Teaching at Safe Start School and providing a high quality education for our children. We have a dedicated and unique approach to education and build a curriculum around the needs and goals of students for them to live the best lives possible. Our committed team of professionals work alongside young people in a wrap-around service that encompasses a child’s life to allow them access to the best services and information available. The team takes a unique and innovative approach to educating key stages 3 and 4 working both in and out of the classroom. My role is to oversee our school vision and support the Senior Leadership Team to ensure no child is left behind and all students leave Safe Start with qualifications and a successful post 16 pathway. Our National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp has been held annually in Washington, D.C., over Memorial Day weekend since 1994. TAPS also conducts regional survivor seminars for adults and youth programs at locations across the country, as well as retreats and expeditions around the world. Staff can get you connected to counseling in your community and help navigate benefits and resources. OUR WORK taps impact 2021 cover photo page 2 TAPS Impact Report 2021 In 2021, we connected with 9,246 newly bereaved loved ones, adding to the nearly 100,000 military survivors currently receiving support from TAPS. That was an average of 25 new survivors - every day. TAPS provides an array of programs, comfort, and resources for the families of the fallen. TAPS held over 930 events that welcomed and supported more than 15,000 participants. We answered over 15,700 calls, resolved over 6,459 casework challenges and connected military survivors with over $241 million dollars in education benefits. We shared our experience and expertise, conducting nearly 71 training sessions on grief, trauma, and suicide postvention nationwide and worldwide reaching over 8,300 individuals. Defibshop was born in 2005. At this point people really did not know what a defibrillator was, despite it being common place in countries like America. If it was going to happen here in the UK we’d need to educate people about what an AED was, when they should be used, how important they were in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest, the impact of using one to the casualty and how easy they are to use whether you are trained or not. For many years it has been an uphill struggle to educate people about defibrillators. Common objections include “Is it law to have one?” and “we’ve never needed one so far so why should I buy one?”, but, after years of education in the importance of early CPR and defibrillation in the event of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), some changes in legislation, high profile incidents and saves by defibs such as Fabrice Muamba in 2012 and Christian Erikson in 2021, as well as the introduction of defibrillator training within workplace first aid courses, these units are now a natural extension of first aid provision. Today we have a highly knowledgeable team working to ensure the correct defibrillator is placed in the correct environment. All defibs deliver a shock of course, but it is important to take the environment into account as models vary and offer different functions. We have also been working with the British Heart Foundation to promote The Circuit, the UK’s national defibrillator network that is linked directly to the 999 ambulance response service and enables the operator to send a caller to the nearest available registered defibrillator, so potentially saving valuable minutes and saving more lives. Please register your unit if you have not done so already. We continue to put pressure on the Government to pass the proposed Automated External Defibrillator Public Access Bill to legislate defibrillators that are accessible to all in public places. Without this, people are going to continue to die from sudden cardiac arrest because there wasn’t a unit close enough to hand. That could happen to any one of us. Scalpel is the University of Manchester’s Surgical Society and a partner of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. As a society, we aim to create and foster an interest in surgery for medical students through regular lectures, workshops, and our highly-regarded annual conference. Scalpel was originally formed in 2001, but it was not until 2006 that a core group of Manchester medical students re-formed the society under guidance from the Royal College of Surgeons, creating Scalpel as we know it today. Since this re-invention, Scalpel has gone from strength to strength to become the great society it is today with over 600 members. As an undergraduate surgical society, Scalpel has three key aims: To organise events that showcase surgery and all of its specialties, To excite and enthuse students about surgery, To provide students who are interested in surgery with relevant careers information and advice. We hope to achieve these aims by organising talks and workshops delivered by charismatic surgeons from each and every surgical specialty. We want to get students excited about surgery early in their medical training on so that they can start to truly consider whether surgery is for them. With competition for surgical jobs becoming more and more fierce, students are being forced to consider their career options earlier than ever before. Students hoping for a career in surgery, therefore, must start to think about how to make themselves more competitive. Scalpel hopes to help these students by organising surgical careers events and by providing students with surgical role models. Scalpel also seeks to encourage students from minorities into surgery, whether those minorities are ethnic, gender, or otherwise, by inviting role models from all walks of life as speakers at our events. Women in Surgery (WinS) events are a frequent feature of Scalpel’s events calendar, and a diverse range of speakers ensures the calendar remains of a high calibre and continues to be interesting and relevant. In 2009 Scalpel held their first ever national conference providing delegates with the opportunity to present their case reports and original research to an audience of esteemed clinicians and students. The conference proved to be a resounding success and it has now become a major annual event attended by medical students from all across the UK and beyond.
