The school has existed in different guises since 1882; initially it was known as Urmston Science and Arts School and was based on Flixton Road with 64 pupils. Its name changed to Urmston Higher Grade Elementary School in 1884 and the building was extended to Ross Grove. The name Urmston Grammar School was first used in 1923; when the independent school had 228 fee paying students. Fees were dropped after the introduction of the 1944 Education Act, which guaranteed free education for every child in England and Wales. In 1929 Urmston Grammar School moved from Ross Grove to our current site. Urmston Grammar was initially a co-educational school until the 1960s when the local authority decided to created two single sex schools. This was not popular with the students who held a silent protest and walked through the streets of Urmston to try and maintain their co-educational establishment. However, the local authority went ahead with their plans and Urmston Grammar School for Boys was built at Bradfield Road and opened in 1961; the Girls School remained on the Newton Road site.

Each member of the faculty is internationally renowned, not only for their musical and performance expertise but also their social skills, a consequence of a regular diet of globe-trotting, performing and conducting master-classes to people of all ages and abilities. It was famously said of the Artistic Director, Dr. Nicholas Childs, that if he had played the cello rather than the euphonium, his name would have been Rostropovich. He is now perhaps more widely known as Artistic Director of the world-famous Black Dyke Band. Meanwhile, the instrumental tutors represent the cream of Britain’s incredibly talented core of brilliant instrumentalists: the incredible Tom Hutchinson from The Cory Band, Daniel Thomas, Richard Marshall and Brett Baker from Black Dyke, Freelance soloist Owen Farr and Gary Curtin from the Fodens Band. Under their expert tutelage you will be given the opportunity to explore new repertoire, meet new friends and generally have a fantastic time. For those applicants who possess an overwhelming desire to seriously improve their all-round playing skills and musical understanding, then, without doubt, they have chosen wisely, for the fixed intention is to provide them with a learning experience of a lifetime, whilst still allowing time and space for holiday fun. If the aim is to balance a general improvement in overall playing standards with making new like-minded friends, whilst enjoying a little more time in the sun amidst great surroundings, then look no further. In short, everyone enrolled in the summer course will be able to design a great banding holiday with precisely as much music making as is desired. The International Brass Band Summer School also caters for non-participating and non-residential visitors. For those who want to brush up on their brass band skills whilst their partners soak up the sun in a sublime environment, rest assured, this will resemble Christmas in the summer.

Dave took on Carole Gandy as a 60 year old who had tried to win the BBAR for TWENTY FIVE YEARS … Her first year with Dave, she won the 100 mile TT Championship and realised her fairy tale when she finally took the BBAR.. The oldest women EVER to do so ….. In Carl Saint’s first year with Dave , he improved beyond belief, when he produced a sub 20 minute 10 mile TT, a sub 50 minute 25 mile TT and did 1.43 for a 50 mile TT and also finished with a Bronze medal in the 50 mile Champs. Dave helped Andy Fenn from a 12 year old novice into one of the best bike riders in the Pro Ranks and winner of the amateur Paris Roubaix and now one of the “Hard Men” in the “SKY TEAM” !. He aided Wendy Houvenaghel from a complete Track rookie to National 3,000 metre Pursuit Champion and World Cup Champion in less than a year and then Wendy went on to be World Champion and Olympic Medallist. Dave helped Chris Carver lose 16 kg in 3 months (without dieting) to realise his ambition to beat the hour for a 25 mile TT when he finished the year with a 56 minute time !! So this proves Dave doesn’t just work with Super Stars … Everyone wants something different. He also took Kara Chesworth from just another bike rider who had only been riding for 2 years and was a mother of three young children to the Women’s National Road Race Series Winner and also took part in the Commonwealth Games for Wales in the same year. The list goes on and doesn’t stop growing … Dave is always there for his athletes and gets a bigger buzz now from them doing well than when he was winning just about everything.
