Author of historical fiction and non fiction. I mainly write historical fiction, inspired by what I call ‘the footnotes of history’: forgotten stories or part-legends about interesting people. My first two series are set in very different eras: 18th century China, following the lives of concubines in the Forbidden City, and 11th century North Africa, following the rise of a Muslim Empire across Morocco and Spain. My first novel, The Fragrant Concubine, was Editor’s Choice at the Historical Novel Society and The Cold Palace won the 2019 Novel London award. If you’d like to try my writing, pick up a free novella, The Cup. I’m currently writing a series set in 1st century AD Rome, following the backstage team of the Colosseum. The first book, From the Ashes, was Editor’s Choice at the Historical Novel Society. I also get curious about other subjects and have written non-fiction books including 100 Things to do while Breastfeeding and The Happy Commuter, featured on BBC Radio and in The Evening Standard. I wrote a 20min sci-fi radio play which was chosen for the 2019 Page to Podcast competition and produced by the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts. You can listen to Fixed here.

Like thousands of parents across the UK, mother of three, ReedahEl-Saiewas frustrated with an antiquated education system originally designed post industrial revolution to prepare children for factory work. She had witnessed how exams and revision had caused her children stress and anxiety, resulting in them losing their love of learning. As a family of diverse heritage Reedahalso hoped for a more inclusive curriculum both in terms of content and delivery. In winter 2018, whilst preparing her son for 11+, Reedah came across Fortnite which her sons during revision breaks. She noticed how the 3D open world, multi-player, action game appealed to children across the world. She imagined 3D open world, educational game, including diverse characters and stories, fully aligned with the UK national curriculum and entrance exams, enabling learning through play. After extensive but fruitless research for a pre-existing educational mobile games app aligned with the UK national curriculum, Reedahfounded BrainsparkGames (previosulyXplorealms). Her vision was to create a 3D open world, celebrating diverse characters, using awesome immersive technology to engage wider audiences as well as BAME, vulnerable and neurodiverse. She researched the twenty-first century skills movement and flip schools and held workshops and interviewed children, parents and teachers to ensure a user-led product. An associate company of English Touring Theatre (ETT), our work ‘practises what it preaches’ (The Sunday Times on Pigfoot) and protests within an industry which, in London alone, has a carbon footprint of 50,000 tonnes a year. Our bike-powered family comedy ‘How To Save A Rock’ has toured with ETT to Northern Stage and Theatre By The Lake, with Battersea Arts Centre & Found in Music, and with support from Slung Low to the Albany, Camden People’s Theatre, Poplar Union, the Pound Arts Centre, and more. HOT IN HERE (an energy-generating dance party), co-produced by the Gate Theatre, commissioned and supported by Camden People's Theatre, toured across the UK in Autumn 2022 to venues including Theatre by the Lake, York Theatre Royal, MAST Southampton, the North Wall Arts Centre, the egg Bath, mac Birmingham, ARC Stockton Arts Centre, Nonsuch Studios, and Contact Manchester. Our new show, Hostile Environments, supported by Boundless Theatre’s Accelerator programme, will begin development in 2023. We have also run workshops, delivered sustainability consultancy, and run engagement programmes for organisations including the National Theatre, Southbank Centre, Rambert, HOME Manchester, and Guildhall School of Speech and Drama. Pigfoot began in Oxford, producing site-specific work by the River Thames and at the Oxford Playhouse. The Alamiyah School stems from a project which began in 2005 with a determined group of home-schooling parents who were eager to create a positive learning environment for their children; one that would foster not only a love of knowledge but give the children a moral framework and nurture each child’s unique genius. The project was subsequently joined by a group of educational professionals and evolved into the Alamiyah Pre-school. We registered as an independent school (Alamiyah School) in 2017 allowing us to cater for school age pupils. The school now caters for pupils of age 3-11 years till the end of the primary age range. The Alamiyah School is inspired by the Prophetic Tradition and will use a curriculum infused with the prophetic stories, arts and sciences. The Montessori approach to early years is the framework upon which the school is based, thus creating an educational experience based on ancient wisdoms and modern discoveries. The Montessori approach creates an environment that offers each child the opportunity to express and develop their individuality and their innate need to learn. It is based on the natural laws of human development (fitra) confirmed by scientific advances and is therefore perfectly in line with a prophetic model for education. The curriculum is child centered, encourages independence and fosters empathy and compassion. The project is lead by an enthusiastic group of teachers trained in the Montessori approach, with many years experience with young children. Our teachers are professionals in their field and have a deeply rooted interest in education. Each of them has come to appreciate the importance of the early years learning in a child’s education and development.
