Winner of the Gold Award - Dance School of the Year 2021 Maida Vale Ballet School was set up to offer the best quality dance education, accessible to all. The school has been recognised by the Council for Dance Education and Training, being awarded their certificate of good professional practice. This means that the school adheres to very strict guidelines with regards to the safety and welfare of its students and the quality of training offered by all members of staff. We take great care to make sure that dance is a fun activity for all students, helping with early years development, musicality, strength, posture and concentration. Developing skills which will benefit children throughout their lives regardless of whether they decide to dance as a profession. For any children who do show the talent and desire to pursue a career in the industry there are many opportunities to audition for a variety of additional programmes. The school cares about creating strong, technical dancers and is certified to teach the Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) programme, it is also a licensed Pirouette Surgery school. Both programmes are offered as workshops and incorporated into class work. Miss Alex has taught students who have gone on to be associates at the Royal Ballet School and Central Ballet School, attended the Royal Ballet School at White Lodge, English National Ballet School, the Brit School, Sylvia Young and Italia Conti. Students have also performed in companies such as English Youth Ballet and London Children’s Ballet.

Power The Fight is an award-winning charity which aims to be the conduit between communities and policy makers (see our Community Empowerment Cycle diagram above). We create co-produced/co-designed long-term strategies for sustainable structural change. Most of our work is with young people, families, schools, local authorities, faith groups and community organisations who want to be equipped to engage with youth violence issues in their context. We do this in a number of ways: 1. Training and Events At Power The Fight we have access to leading thinkers and practitioners from a range of disciplines working in the field of youth violence. Since the beginning of 2019 we have trained and equipped over 8000 organisations and individuals to make a difference to young people’s lives, including the NHS, schools, faith groups, charities, local authorities and more. Resources At Power The Fight we have developed resources to help organisations, faith and community groups to better understand issues relating to youth violence. These include specialist PowerTalks, links to helpful websites and toolkits. For more information go to PowerTalks or our resources page. 3. Building Connections At Power The Fight we bring community groups together with local authorities, services and other partners to promote mutuality, improve cohesion and effect change. Families At Power The Fight we support families impacted by youth violence. We do this in partnership, providing access to culturally competent therapeutic, financial and legal support. We have also developed our Therapeutic Intervention for Peace programme (TIP) which is now being piloted across London. TIP provides culturally competent therapy to young people, families and frontline staff engaging/impacted by violence affecting young people. WE TEACH. Since January 2014, ReadAble has been running weekly reading and language arts classes for children ages 2 to 15 in a neighbourhood in the Chin Swee area. We started out teaching in children’s homes, but have grown to occupy classrooms in the Residents’ Committee Centre. We teach a phonics-based curriculum to our earliest readers and deliver a programme which complements the primary school syllabus for those who have mastered the basics of reading. We use drama, movement and play to draw out a love for reading, build self-confidence, and encourage creativity. WE BUILD. ReadAble has built a community library of over a thousand books for our kids to freely access books at every reading level throughout the week. We also organise educational excursions to plays and museums, as well as connect kids’ families with community resources, such as school supply donations and workshops by professional educators. Through our BookDrop project, we set up conducive study spaces and mini-libraries in kids’ homes. WE MENTOR. Apart from our classes every Saturday, some volunteers run one-on-one classes with children in their homes across the week forming deep relationships with families. We also started a class teaching the predominantly migrant mothers of our students, functional English to navigate life in Singapore. EVERY CHILD LOVED. We believe that children thrive in love. We are committed to forming lasting relationships with them as teachers and mentors. Each child’s progress is closely monitored and classes are tailored to meet their learning styles. We recognise that our children weather challenges such as parental incarceration or family violence, and we strive to support them. EVERY FAMILY PARTNERED. Family support is crucial to a child’s success. We work alongside families to reinforce children's learning at home. We seek to understand our children’s home life and we engage parents with routine updates on their children’s progress. EVERY VOLUNTEER EMPOWERED. ReadAble is entirely volunteer-led and run, and we are serious about equipping our people. We run regular training sessions on topics from phonics to classroom management and how toxic stress affects child development. We constantly refine our methods based on research and best practices. EVERYONE A COMMUNITY. We seek to build an inclusive community that encourages children's diverse aspirations and engages everyone with empathy. We have a flat volunteer structure led by our Co-founders and Core Team who form friendships with children and their families. Together, we work to eradicate social inequality.
