Our vision here at ‘Soma’ is to offer a tranquil, community driven and inclusive wellness hub for those wishing to pursue health, happiness and soul searching. Through yoga, dance, movement, meditation and alternative therapies we hope to provide a sanctuary that can be shared and enjoyed by the local community of Otley and beyond. SOMA has long existed in our minds – it just took a lot of meetings, creative vision and shopping trips until we were able to finally create our little studio. We had one main intention – to build a studio that could impact the lives of those living around us. We wanted to create a space whereby people feel warmth as they enter, a space for people to unwind over a post-yoga coffee, a space for children to explore their worlds through learning and movement, and finally a space away from home whereby people could seek that much needed physical and emotional restoration!

athan is the CEO of LifeLine Projects, an East London based charity dedicated to finding solutions that positively impact the lives of individuals and influence the systems that govern us. Nathan has worked at LifeLine since 2003 and has developed key relationships with schools across East London providing a ‘pastoral partnership’ in the form of mentoring, alternative provision and youth leadership programmes. Nathan also developed and spearheads LifeLine’s award-winning Vision, Identity and Purpose (VIP) Framework, an approach to working with young people, employment seekers, volunteers and parents. Prior to this he worked for the local Children’s Fund as a Community Liaison Officer. He continues to support youth organisations by providing education and mentoring advice and training. Nathan sits on the Health and Wellbeing Board, The Children’s Partnership and is a governor of a local secondary school. He continues to work with young people on a voluntary basis in addition to his day job to ensure that policy and practice remain connected.

We seek to promote creative dialogue between people of all ages, classes, genders, ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds.  The company’s activities primarily benefit local community groups in Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Newham. We work with people of all ages, classes, genders, cultural and religious backgrounds that live side-by-side in these boroughs. Through formats like Talkaoke – a pop-up talkshow – we promote speaking, listening and exchange of ideas and perspectives between these groups, helping to strengthen community cohesion and dialogue and supporting creative and collaborative initiatives, which positively impact their neighbourhoods. We work with a wide range of organisations and charities to deliver our activities nationally, including facilitating community consultation to inform local cultural, community and placemaking strategies. Racing to School (reg no.1040590) is an education charity that aims to inspire young minds through the provision of free, interactive, and healthy outdoor educational events for schools, staged at a variety of racing venues. In 2021, Racing to School delivered 221 events across the country – engaging over 8,000 young people. The global Covid-19 pandemic has had an acute impact on the charity’s ability to deliver events over the past two years, but we are grateful for all our existing and new partnerships which enable us to now return to our growth strategy. This year we are aiming to reach a diverse group of 16,000 young people. The charity works with young people with special educational needs and over one third of our output is targeted to engage those from inner city, rural and deprived areas. Our staff has a range of industry backgrounds including former jockeys who have retrained to develop their second careers, and their experience is invaluable as the charity introduces horseracing as an accessible sport to young people.

Our cohort of “Rock Your Roll”ers have proved there is an alternative to traditional onboarding that makes a practical difference when starting new jobs. All this has been made possible by the generosity of many people: The founder, Christopher Ross, who has worked tirelessly (unpaid) to keep Convoy rolling 70+ speakers who have generously given their time to speak at our Guest events A dedicated core of volunteers who take responsibility for introductions, the guest speaker program, and leading the “retros” The Members, without whom none of this works! There is no Community without people supporting each other: by showing up and listening, members of the Convoys get the hope, reassurance, inspiration and, above all, accountability they need to get the job done! The positive impact that helping others has on individual mental wellbeing is well known, and confirmed in numerous scientific studies. The same is observed in Convoy, and we intend to keep doing it!
