Initially as Kirklees Art Space Society, then St. Pauls Print Workshop and Eastthorpe Visual Arts, we have operated from the old Victorian school next to St Paul’s Church since 1984. From the beginning our aim was to nurture local and regional artists through the provision of studio space, print facilities and presentation of high quality exhibitions. Key people helped us along the way: a partnership of artists, Yorkshire Arts, Association, Councillors and Kirklees Council officers, all keen to see arts and culture expanded in the borough. The first exhibition was by Sonia Lawson RA, who was chosen because of her connections with the area, and since then, hundreds of artists have been through our door. Our recent exhibition ‘35’ brought together a few of the artists associated with WYPW, including some who were here at the very beginning. We look forward to the next 35 years!

The HSA is an independent registered charity, founded in 1911. It is the only UK charity concerned exclusively in the promotion of the humane treatment of all food animals worldwide in markets, during transport, at slaughter, and killing for welfare reasons and disease control. Growing numbers of people are interested and concerned about the welfare of the animals that provide them with food and the HSA has gained an international reputation for providing practical, science-based solutions to improve food animal welfare. The objectives of the HSA are: The promotion of humane methods of slaughter; The introduction of reforms in livestock markets (including transport facilities) where needed to prevent the suffering of animals. The HSA works to achieve these through providing: Technical information and advice on all aspects of animal handling, transport and slaughter. Training and education in humane methods of handling and slaughter of livestock for farmers, vets, abattoir staff and students. Technical and educational publications in a range of formats. Independent advice to governments, animal welfare organisations and the food industry worldwide. Visits to farm animal handling and slaughtering facilities, recommending and advising on improvements where necessary. Funding and support for essential research and other projects aimed at improving animal welfare during transport, in markets and at slaughter. Assistance with development and application of scientific advances into the working practices of the meat industry. The HSA's work has resulted in many significant improvements for food animals around the world and many of the reforms it has promoted in transport, markets and slaughter are now taken for granted. Significant improvements continue to be achieved through working constructively alongside agricultural, meat industry, veterinary and other welfare and professional organisations. Together we can make a difference The HSA relies on donations, subscriptions and legacies. We deliver teacher training programmes . We twin the schools with UK schools for ongoing educational and cultural exchange. We assist with basic healthcare at all schools: Provide first aid kits to all schools and sanitary towels to secondary schools, Provide basic healthcare assessments on pupils, Provide assistance if parents can't afford or access essential treatment. Our time, space and resources are dedicated to supporting artistic development and community imagination, as such we are home to a thriving creative community where everyone is welcome. Our work takes place at our venue, a grade II listed textile mill in Halifax. Here you will find our art school with extensive creative production facilities and equipment, our gallery where creative practices and processes are shared and showcased as well as our artist studios, where 20 artists and creative practitioners make their work. Our work also takes place out in the community at schools and community venues, online and in peoples homes. Artworks is a community interest company so we don't work for profit. The income we generate is used to support the communities we are established to serve. Thanks to our funding partners and supporters we are able to make many of our activities free. Where we don’t receive any subsidy we make sure that access is affordable while always paying artists a fair rate.
