2 day Portrait Workshop in acrylics inspired by Dante Gabriel Rossetti&nbsp;&nbsp;Join well known Edinburgh artist and tutor Suzanne Kemplay and model Beth Davison to create a portrait in the style of the pre Raphaelite Brotherhood. Expect an atmospheric set and romantic lighting in keeping with the Rossetti&rsquo;s style, with a few modern touches thrown in.&nbsp;&nbsp;On Day 1 Suzanne will give a short talk on how to approach your composition and how to capture the spirit of the artist&rsquo;s technique. You&rsquo;ll plan and sketch out a drawing in the morning before moving on to painting in the afternoon and on day two.&nbsp;All materials are supplied (or feel free to bring your own) and the class is kept small to ensure everyone gets some individual attention. 
This course is most suited to those who have some drawing experience but we welcome beginners. Over 14s only.

Develop your mosaic making skills in this one day workshop with Jacky Cox from Mossy Mosaic.If you have previously attended the introduction to mosaic making or the mosaic with reclaimed china workshop with Jacky, or have some prior experience of mosaic making, this is the workshop for you! Develop your skills in this full day session where you will practice more precision cutting techniques and have the opportunity to work with a range of materials including reclaimed china, sea washed glass, sea washed china and vitreous glass tiles.&nbsp;You will design, make and grout your own bespoke hanging fish, suitable for inside or outside. A selection of china and other materials will be provided (along with your pre-cut &amp; treated wooden fish) and you can also bring your own. You might also want to incorporate your own embellishments such as old buttons, beads or pieces of jewellery.In her own work Jacky uses a mix of materials. One Day Weekend Beginner’s Pottery Workshop 

I've added this two day workshop because a one day workshop gives you the basics, but two days will allow you to develop your carving technique and use additional knife grasps.&nbsp;
By embedding good technique into the way you carve, you will avoid injuries and additional regular stretching will help you to look after your body. You will leave with the knowledge and confidence to carve safely at home.&nbsp;
You will have access to a range of different tools, starting with the axe to rough out spoon blanks - I have a good range of axes you can try from budget to the Gransfors large carving axe. Next using the Mora wood carving knives (105/106/120) to shape your blanks into spoons following traditional designs for optimising strength and utility. I also have a range of hook knives to try out. Using these traditional tools you will make a spoon from local and sustainable fresh cut green wood (usually willow/birch/alder or cherry) - starting with a log and leaving with a spoon. From the initial splitting of the log, trimming it down with an axe, to carving finer details and decorations with chip carving knives.
This course is located close to central Edinburgh and is accessible by public transport.&nbsp;
Depending on the weather it can be inside or outdoors in the wildlife garden. Courses can also be arranged to suit your availability! Please email to discuss your requirements, discounts are available for small groups or multiple days. Course numbers are usually limited to five or less; individual training courses can also be arranged.

Two Day Wood Spoon Carving Workshop

We will start with a short overview of the various methods, approaches and possibilites of mosaic making before focusing on the techniques of the art including materials, cutting and adhesives. You will then work on your own mosaic, either using your own design or choosing from a selection of pre-prepared templates. Your mosaic will need time to dry so the workshop will include a grouting demonstration and you will take home a small bag of grout and instructions to finish the mosaic at home.&nbsp;

This mosaic introduction day is an informal creative workshop during which we will make a mosaic plaque providing you with all the skills necessary to start making your own mosaics at home.

Choose to make greetings cards, postcards or bookmarks with your own personalised message. You may want to bring along a short quote or sentiment, a sentence is perfect, but we&rsquo;ll have plenty of ideas on hand to inspire you too.

You&rsquo;ll set your chosen metal type and print it on one of our Adana tabletop presses. These portable machines are perfect for the hobby printer and a great way to get started in letterpress printing. We&rsquo;ll show you the basics of how to set the press up for printing, how to register your print perfectly and how to clean everything down at the end of the session.&nbsp;
