Time was fast approaching lunch when one of my clients asked rather loudly “Where’s my lunch?” The name stuck, and that evening I purchased Wheresmylunch.co.uk. The date was March 2007. The following year, I left the company that I was working with to study for my full-time MBA (This is a story in itself). In October 2008, I registered the company – Wheresmylunch Limited. Subsequent years have seen the .com added to help in forthcoming expansion into the US market.

Like many people in our profession, I didn’t exactly grow up dreaming of working in ELT, but what made me fall in love with it was two main things: ❤ The opportunity to work directly with people and help them to help themselves change their lives for the better. ❤ The great colleagues I got to work with, as a teacher, teacher trainer, manager and materials writer. Working as a business and mindset coach with ELT freelance professionals enables me to combine both those things, and to use the skills and experience I have to have a real impact. One of the things I don’t like about ELT is the way that so many excellent professionals are underpaid, undervalued and scraping by. I also far too often see people working themselves into the ground. This might be OK when we’re in our early twenties with no responsibilities, but it’s no way to run a sustainable and enjoyable professional career.

My passion for sewing started at an early age when making matching outfits for mother and daughter was the done thing! The sewing machine we used was temperamental but despite this I was hooked! On visits to my grandparents I would also watch my granny hand sewing little bags with zips or altering her clothes. The possibilities of this new hobby seemed endless. You could also save a fortune and I was so pleased with my creations… What I loved about sewing and still do, is being able to make something that is exactly what I want and it is well-finished enough so it looks as though I have bought it. It certainly doesn’t have to be expensive either, in fact the thriftier the better! Over the years I have been on various courses and workshops to learn more about sewing (and in particular more recently about soft furnishings) and I even got myself a job for a year in the Fabric Department at Liberty in London which was really rather special! I eventually became a teacher myself (English as a Foreign Language) which I loved; I now know how I would want to be taught and how not to teach! For the past six years or so I have been making soft furnishings in the room at the bottom of the garden, firstly for family, then friends and then others, all with the ultimate aim of setting up sewing workshops. And so my dream job is now a reality: all my experience has come together so I can teach people my passion for fabrics, colour, sewing and soft furnishings. The satisfaction I get and can give my students is immense; now I am giving people the skills and the confidence to make beautiful cushions for their home or for their friends; teaching them how to calculate and cut for beautifully hand-finished curtains and blinds… and all in the fabric they love! These sewing workshops are the making-time for you and your home – so what will you come and learn?

On occasion, we are asked by prospective students about our background and how and where we started. To put things simply, students want to know more about us before they decide whether to select us as their distance learning provider. And who can blame them! The initial idea of setting up UK Open College was the brainchild of our director Bill Nicholls. After many years of working within an education and in particular the distance learning sector. Bill gained a thorough understanding of exactly what students were looking for when embarking on their home study journey. After years of speaking and dealing directly with distance learning students, it was soon established exactly what it was that students required. The main three factors were to offer the opportunity to study anywhere, anytime, offer true flexibility and to ensure any offering was affordable to the majority of students.
