Craig Robbins Founder Craig has a wife Vicky and four children. He served in the Royal Green Jackets and is now Rifleman Veteran. How Chosen VSG started After being diagnosed with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) in 2015 and going the preferred pathways of medicine and Therapy, Craig found that a lot of the help and support that was available at that time was inefficient and could often have long waiting periods on an ever increasing waiting list. Craig decided to form a Motorcycle Club purely for Veterans which more often than not became ‘beer and banter’ nights. The seed was then sown for a support group that was proactive and would work with the veterans from point of contact through to completion. Sometimes there is no completion and individuals require lengthy aftercare provided by a Buddy Buddy system. Four years on Chosen Veteran Support Group now prides itself on being the most proactive Veteran Support group in Birmingham and has now achieved Home Office Approval.

I have had an interest in Art for most of my adult life and having never studied it at school I was nervous of taking up any classes so late in life. However, by chance whilst trying to find local art classes I happened to stumble upon Back Room Art and I sent an enquiring email. From the very first communication Heather put me immediately at ease and gave me the confidence to go to my first class. I joined a wonderful group of people. Heather works well to ensure we are all included in the lessons, working at our own pace and with projects and materials we feel comfortable to use. Heather’s inspiration, openness and motivation have given me a confidence in doing something I never felt capable of doing. Our works are encouraged and praised and Heather’s communication with everyone is brilliant to ensure we all get something out of it. She listens carefully to our aspirations and helps us to achieve them with advice, suggestions and with realistic goals. The facilities we work in are relaxed, friendly and well stocked with all the artistic materials you could wish for, giving me a chance to use resources I would not generally have tried out at home on my own. Coming to this class has given me so much more than just the opportunity to create art; it has opened my eyes to art I would not normally have looked for, expanding my horizons and opportunities. It is the one thing on a Monday that I do look forward to." This is upsetting for the staff and volunteers who look after them, at this much loved family learning facility (open daily). Funding has been attracted by Retrofit Balsall Heath for up to 700 homes. Deadline for return of applications is Wednesday 23 November . Delays and even disappointments are possible with a free scheme, but “if you don’t ask, you dont get”. There’s no household income cap, or requirement to be on benefits, but the scheme is for older homes with poor energy rating (D,E,F,G EPCs). The scheme is completely free for eligible owner-occupiers. Private landlords need to pay a one-third contribution. A 3-page form needs to be filled in by the resident to apply and agree for a surveyor to visit. These can be got from BH Library, Baths, BH Children’s Centre, Jericho Foundation. If enough people vote Yes, the new council will be set up and the councilors recruited. They will then draw up a plan and a budget and set the “precept” (a small charge) to pay running costs. There is a new webpage that tells people more about the case for setting up this new structure, separate from Birmingham City Council, (but working with it of course) to power up our ability to solve problems, find opportunities and get communication and coordination working in our complex and multicultural neighbourhood.
