We are a bespoke Training Centre for students aged 16-19 with Special Educational Needs. The students will have an emotional, behavioural or complex cognitive need which will be reflected in their Educational Health and Care Plans. Our school will aim to admit up to 25 students each academic year. Each student will stay with us for a minimum of two full academic years. Our centre is a specialist provider with a focus on preparing the students for the world of work. The curriculum reflects this ethos and the students can select from a range of practical courses designed to reflect current job market trends. All of the students are expected to continue with studying English and Maths as well as developing their interpersonal, social and communication skills through Personal Development and Employability qualifications. Our aim is that by the time each student leaves that they are able to function in a work environment or that they are able to further their skills through further education or training courses.

Democracy The principles of democracy, of having a voice and a say in how institutions are run, are explored within the curriculum and across the school. From this we aim to foster an appreciation of the democratic process and allow students to actively engage in decision making so that they are ready to do this in the wider society when the time comes. Citizenship, PSHE and History in particular consider the nature of democracy and in doing so explain alternative systems, their strengths and weaknesses, and the development of democracy today, for example in proportional representation. Within lessons too, we look to provide opportunities for students to make decisions about their learning based on their prior learning and need, identifying an outcome and working towards it in a way which works for them.

Che, founder of Young Parent Talks, is a young mum from Birmingham who has been sharing her story in schools, colleges and youth clubs for almost 4 years. After her life was disrupted by teenage pregnancy and an intense abusive relationship, Che was left with very little ambition and aim in life. She ended up having a baby at 19 thinking this would be 'the easy option'. She had a reality check when she realised it wasn't as easy as she'd thought and really struggled to step up to the responsibility of having a child. After working hard to get her life together whilst also raising her child, she started working for charity, Straight Talking. This is where Che found her passion, teaching young people the realities of being a young parent. In 2022, Che set up 'Young Parent Talks', delivering sessions and assembly's in school's, teaching pupils what it really means to become a teenage parent and how it changes your life, by sharing her story. After several years of experience teaching EAL to all age groups, she began teaching IB Diploma Programme English and ToK in 2002. Since then she has also taken on the roles of examiner and workshop leader for the IB. Her perspective has been shaped and informed by her varied experience and her teaching in very different and diverse contexts in Greece, Germany, the UK and China. Additionally, her experience from working at residential schools has enhanced her awareness of the impact of holistic education on teaching and lifelong learning. Her understanding of the challenges of the interaction of national curricula with the IB Diploma Programme as well using English as the medium of instruction in international schools have become an integral feature of her professional agenda. The administrative positions she has also held -IB Diploma Programme Coordinator and Head of English- inform not only her understanding of contextual and pedagogical implications for the teaching of English for both students and teachers, but also the impact of secondary education on raising internationally-minded global citizens who will continue to learn, earn and contribute to a sustainable future for all. Anna has a passion for reading, for learning that challenges expectations and curricula, for asking searching questions, as well as for strategic thinking for educational institutions. She is the author of several academic papers in Theoretical Linguistics and her most recent writing project being the Oxford University Press English A: Literature Course Companion for the new IB Diploma Programme curriculum (first teaching 2019). The St Bernadette Centre has recently undergone significant refurbishment and investment. Students have exclusive access to a group work room on their study day which doubles as a social space at break and lunch. They also have access to computer facilities in our new library which provides a modern learning space to aid them as they become more independent learners. Our curriculum offers the very best in both academic and vocational courses to match the needs of all our students. All Sixth Form students study Core RE across their two year career with us and complete the Extended Project, applying Catholic Social Teaching to a moral and ethical issue of their choice. Whilst we believe in allowing greater freedom to our students, we strive to have a true partnership between students, parents and tutors. Excellent pastoral care is provided by experienced tutors who advise, encourage and monitor student progress. The Duke of Edinburgh Award remains a strong feature of our school into the Sixth Form. The award gives students the chance to experience physical activities, volunteering, whilst developing life skills through expeditions; it is valued by universities and employees alike. During May half-term, Sixth Form students join the annual Diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes to care for and assist the sick and disabled pilgrims. This is a very popular extra-curricular opportunity which really demonstrates the faith of our students in action.
