Karan graduated from the University of Salford in 2006 with a First Class Honours degree in Health Sciences. During her final year she conducted research for Dementia UK (then known as Fordementiaplus) exploring South Asian carers’ experiences of services in Wolverhampton when caring for a family member with dementia. This research led to her doctoral study at Keele University which explored how migration experiences impact upon caring for a person with dementia in the Sikh community in Wolverhampton. This biographical study highlighted challenges with access to, and experience of, health and social care services in the UK – with such experiences being strongly linked to their experiences as migrants in the UK.

As YOT Manager she obtained funding for specialist Speech and Language Therapy input, a successful innovation which was taken up UK-wide. Working closely with the speech, language and communication consultant has provided Henrietta with additional skills and understanding around the complexity of communication and language and its impact on educational outcomes and behaviour, she has also had direct experience of working with Deaf Young people. Mental WealthThe Mental Wealth Project is a mental health literacy education programme for young people. The aim is to equip young people and their families with knowledge, tools and skills to reduce stigma, improve wellbeing, spot warning signs of mental distress, and enhance access to the right care and support when they need it. Le Va delivers tailored face-to-face workshops in secondary schools, sports-clubs, churches and other community settings. This Mental Wealth website was designed to complement these workshops. Because the online world is a significant community for young people, The Mental Wealth Project also includes social media and gaming as important things that can impact on mental health and wellbeing. The team at Le Va co-designed and tested the programme over 2 years (2017-2018) with young people, Pasifika and Māori rangatahi, parents, teachers, secondary schools, rugby league clubs, sports coaches, clinicians, mental health organisations, gamers, suicide prevention specialists and cultural knowledge holders.
