Cambridge Open College has been providing distance learning, home study, open learning and correspondence courses since 2006. The College’s founders have more than 25 years combined expertise in education generally, and distance learning (also known as home study) in particular. Few distance-learning establishments have more experience at a “hands on” level; we’ve all been tutors and assessors in the sector for many years. Heavy investment in state-of-the-art technology has typified the College’s development, particularly in its more recent history. Our systems are second to none, and make your learning experience as enjoyable and hassle-free as possible. The College provides more than 120 courses across 5 faculties, successful completion of which result in nationally recognised qualifications listed on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF), or certification for specialist bespoke (unregulated) qualifications. Most are endorsed or accredited by some of the UK’s most prolific Awarding Organisations. The college’s students come from all walks of life, and undertake the courses for a wide range of reasons, including career enhancement, continuous professional development (CPD), and studying purely for fun to expand their existing knowledge of a hobby or stimulating subject. We exist because of our students. You are the most important resource we have. If you want to study a course we don’t currently have, let us know. We are always looking for more to satisfy our growing alumni. If you notice anything on the website, in your course materials or in any of your interaction with us that is not satisfactory in any way, then please tell us. We want your learning journey to be as fulfilling and enjoyable as possible.

Online Business English Courses

online business english courses

John’s Online English wants to work with you to make you more confident in business situations. We want you to be successful and get that next job that you want. We want you to be able to write what you want in business emails and reports. We want to take you to the next level in your Business English. How will we do this? It’s simple. Using our virtual classroom and working together with you, we will customize the one to one course of your choosing. We have English Presentations, Business English, English Job Interview, English Resume Writing, Business Correspondence, and English Writing courses. All you need to do is go to the registration page and sign up. The courses will be online using our Virtual Classroom, in which we will be able to use a whiteboard, share documents and files, watch videos, and review presentations in real time. The classroom has real time two way video and audio where we will be able to see and hear each other. The screen size of the video feed that we see can be adjusted at any time. The online classroom allows me to upload Microsoft Office files and You Tube videos that we can use, study, and watch during the class. These are things that cannot be done in online language teachings through Skype. In the virtual classroom we can do many of the things that can be done in a real classroom without leaving our homes or offices. To start with we will have a free first session where we will have a discussion between yourself and myself to determine what it is you want to learn. Also, you will get an explanation of how I propose to teach you. During this session we will also work on some of the English problem areas that you have identified and we will have a chance to discover other English weaknesses that you may have. As I pointed out at the start of the paragraph this session will not cost you anything, and it will last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your learning and course requirements. The main Business English courses that I offer are: English for Job Interviews, English for Presentations, English for Business Correspondence (writing emails), Resume Writing, Business English, English Writing, and a General English Course. These courses can be modified to meet your needs. They can also be combined into one course in different proportions. They can be flexible for the number of hours, the content, the scheduling, etc. The courses can also be flexible in regard to postponing a scheduled course. Taking an online Business English course with John’s Online English can be very flexible in various parameters. The main teacher will be myself, John. I have 10 years’ business English teaching experience, mostly from teaching in Taiwan at one of the top business English schools (the International Trade Institute). As well, I have over 20 years’ business experience in telecommunications and financial planning. My education includes a BA in History, and an MBA in which I focused on Finance and Marketing. So, I have the business background and the business English training to be offering to you Business English courses online. As you can see John’s Online English is for serious leaners of English. My philosophy is that I want to take you to the next level in your English and ensure that you are more comfortable in business situations. Also, that you are prepared for your next English job interview and that you are better able to write what you want to write for business purposes. If you are dedicated to improving your English, then together we can take your English to the next level. I hope to see you soon in my virtual classroom taking one of my Business English courses.

Amelia's Kitchen - cookery courses and accommodation in the Yorkshire Dales

amelia's kitchen - cookery courses and accommodation in the yorkshire dales

North Yorks

We are Ed and Amelia. After many years in Oxford, first studying (both of us), then working in archaeology labs (Ed), and running a fun and fabulous pop-up cookery school with the equally fun and fabulous Sophie Grigson (Amelia), we decided the time had come for a new adventure. So here we are. For Ed, it is more of a return to his roots, having grown up on a farm near Kirkby Lonsdale. For me (well, it is Amelia’s kitchen – I think you might guess that it is Amelia who does the social media!), it is a chance to put down some new roots, and thus far, I love it. So who are we? Ed is a chemist by academic background, a farmer by family background, and a curious mind and problem solver by nature. He now works for B4RN, mapping the route for super-fast broadband for the rural North. My history lies in the food, wine, and literature of Italy (specifically Renaissance five-act comedy and the food of Garfagnana, where I also make wine!). My formal food training was a Cordon Bleu diploma at Tante Marie, followed by a couple of years of restaurant work. To complement my food training (and because, let’s face it, I’m a learning addict) I also completed my WSET wine diploma. The highlight of the course was winning a prize for one exam, which involved being taken to Vinitaly in Verona by the lovely people at Liberty Wine. I was already hooked on Italian wine, but that just reinforced the habit!

Citizens UK

London

Founded in 1989, we are a single organisation with seventeen Chapters across England and Wales. Our Chapters are led by local people acting together for the common good through the method of Community Organising. The UK has a rich history of people organising for power and change such as the Levellers, the Abolitionists, the Chartists, early trade unionists like the match girls and dock strikers, and the Suffragettes. Our work at Citizens UK is influenced by a heritage which draws on the broad-based organising of our sister organisation, the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) and before that the US civil rights movement. Over the last thirty years we have won £1.8bn in additional wages for low paid workers, ended child detention for immigration purposes, secured an amnesty of ‘legacy cases’ for 160,000 asylum applicants as well as winning many victories at the local and regional level. We build power with people so that together we can move from the world as it is toward the world as it should be. Some of our campaigns have spun off into dedicated projects, to create long-term change. The largest and most successful of these teams is the Living Wage Foundation which now accredits a network of over 9,000 employers who pay 300,000 employees the real Living Wage. Others include Parents and Communities Together (PACT) and Sponsor Refugees. We are proud of other social innovations that have successfully spun out to become independent organisations such as Safe Passage, London Community Land Trust and Money Mentors.

Slamfresh

slamfresh

London

At SlamFresh, we believe poetry can make a big difference to young people’s lives. But the need to create a nurturing and supportive environment in which to write has never been greater. Although the popularity of the art form, particularly spoken word, continues to grow on an unprecedented scale, last year, for the first time in our country’s history, poetry was nearly made an optional GCSE subject. As well as this, the recent closure of schools has meant that young people from lower economic backgrounds have been put at an even greater disadvantage than they already were. Cut off from schools, many of these young people simply have not had the space or resources to access creative opportunities, at a time when they need them more than ever. SlamFresh is a CIC based in the Newcastle upon Tyne which aims to address these problems. We run workshops that focus on the contemporary styles of spoken word and slam poetry, styles of writing which we have found can engage some of the most reluctant students. SlamFresh work in partnership with schools and community centres to mentor young people in writing, editing and performance. We have 3 company directors, Rowan McCabe, Michael MacDonald and Jeff Price. Rowan McCabe and Michael MacDonald (stage name Donald Jenkins) also serve as the two primary facilitators for the workshops, although guests may be brought in on a freelance basis where required. The directors met through their work as professional poets. Collectively, they have spent over 40 years working with children and young people.
