Dragon Tang Soo Do is an Association of friendly family martial arts clubs based predominantly in the South West of England. Tang Soo Do is a traditional Korean martial art which teaches self-defence, fighting skills and weapons, in addition, its many benefits also act as a guide to allow people to live a healthy and harmonious life. Incorporated within the Association is a Japanese based style of martial arts called Wado Ryu. These clubs which are based in Bournemouth joined the Association in 2004 and share our ethos, values and aims. Together we are a strong, united and friendly group of like minded martial artists keen to improve our knowledge and pass on our skills and experience to others. Our clubs cater for people with a wide range of abilities and ages (5 years and above), so whether you want to train to improve your fitness and health, or are keen to learn how to defend yourself, or simply want to find a hobby to relieve stress and make new friends, then we maybe for you! We live in challenging times and nowadays, increasing numbers of people are learning to protect themselves and their families, our martial arts are a very effective tried and tested method of self-defence. However there are many other reasons why men, women and children train with us, our martial art also provides skills such as self-confidence, self-discipline, physical fitness, flexibility, co-ordination and respect, skills that help us all to cope better with the pressures of everyday life. The real benefits of Dragon Tang Soo Do are not the coloured belts you earn, but the positive changes that you will experience, the enhancement of your mind, body and spirit as well as the development of individual character and respect for others. The true goal of Dragon Tang Soo Do is to use the lessons you learn in class to enrich every part of your life. Our Vision The vision of Dragon Tang Soo Do is one where people can practice the Martial Arts in a safe and controlled environment. Dragon Tang Soo Do will strive to retain the important traditional aspects of our style, whilst being adaptable and open to new techniques and ideas. Our Instructors and senior grades will endeavour to provide instruction and guidance in a way that does not prejudice any student and will enhance the development of all, both in and out of the Dojang and Dojo (Training Halls). History of Tang Soo Do The very first evidence of this ancient form of Korean martial arts appeared during the Three Kingdom era (57 BC-935 AD) as Hwa Rang Do. Since then, 2,000 years have passed. The indigenous martial arts quietly developed through generations of the Korean people. During some eras it flourished and other times it diminished, according to the political, economic or cultural environment. The art was known by various names throughout the eras, such as Hwa-Rang Do, Kyuck Too Ki, Moo Sul, Soo Bahk Ki, Soo Byuck Ki, and others. Following 1945 Korean independence, the Korean martial arts were again merged and flourished throughout the entire Korean Peninsula. Many organisations were founded with various names such as Soo Bahk Do, Tang Soo Do, Tae Soo Do, etc… At the beginning of the modern era of the Korean martial arts, Tang Soo Do was the most popular term for these arts. However, at that time, the Korean political leader was concerned about establishing Korean value based on Korean nationalism. The political leaders recognized the popularity of Korean martial arts around the world, but were opposed to the use of the name Tang Soo Do for the art, as it sounded like a Chinese martial art, because the first word “Tang” could be interpreted as representing the Chinese Tang Dynasty (617-907 AD). In 1964, a government sponsored small group created a new name for the Korean martial arts: Tae Kwon Do. We still respect the original term, Tang Soo Do, and intend to preserve its heritage and value as a traditional way or path. Unfortunately, many Tae Kwon Do instructors did not maintain the traditional values of the true martial arts. Instead, they converted to a sport as they have progressed to the internationally recognized sports arenas such as the Olympic games. This was considered to be a great political achievement, to bring strength and prominence to the Korean government in International politics. True Martial Arts lovers had no place within these Tae Kwon Do dojangs (Training Halls) to continue to pursue traditional martial arts because they abandoned many valuable aspects of true Martial Arts to become a simple competitive sport. We, as Tang Soo Do practitioners are striving to maintain traditional values of respect, dicipline, self control, self improvement, etiquette and ultimately live a healthy and harmonious life, physically and mentally. History of Wado Ryu It would be very difficult to trace the original roots of karate back to their inception, however it is believed that the Okinawan Islands off the Japanese coast were the birth place of the art practiced across the world today. Despite the strong links to Japan, the original name was “Chinese hand" or "Tang hand" which during the early part of the 1900s, the Japanese changed to Kara-te “open” or “empty hand” Wado Ryu is one of the four most popular karate styles practiced today, in comparison with others, it is relatively modern with the founder Hironori Ohtsuka, who had studied other forms of martial arts previously, introducing Wado Ryu in Tokyo around the mid 1930s. It wasn’t until 1965 that it was introduced to the United Kingdom by Tatsuo Suzuki. Our Clubs in Bournemouth have been operating since 1992 and we work hard to maintain the traditions and techniques as outlined by the Founder.

Ok, ok it wasn’t quite that simple! The thing is, I was lacking connection to myself, connecting with the wrong people to fit in, holding onto the past, people pleasing, exhausted and stressed- sound familiar? I was holding all my emotions in and not facing them- healing happens by feeling. Yes it’s uncomfortable but oh so worth it! I’m a big believer in this -you are never too old or too young to start something! Never too young to start educating around emotional wellbeing and never too old to make changes to your life or start over! What you waiting for? I live on the edge of the Cambridgeshire Fens for many years, right between the flat fenlands to the east and the first gently rolling hills to the west. It’s a fascinating place, immensely rich in history and with many nationally important nature reserves. Kathryn Parsons My work flows from my love of nature, small details and place combined with a life-long delight in exploring craft techniques. It’s an adventure driven by curiosity and a desire to seek out and share some of the fascinating stories of this amazing planet and the people who’ve lived here… because stories help us connect with places and each other, which is good for humans! And feeling connected also means we’re more likely to cherish and protect biodiversity and heritage. My deep grief for the damage that the natural world is sustaining adds drive and reason. Found in the Fields, detail As I spend time getting to know a place, delving in to archives and talking with people who know it best, I search for stories that capture my attention and which I think will fascinate others too. I intentionally allow space for discoveries to guide the final outcomes, and select materials and techniques that best tell the story. Sharing the research and exploration via social media draws others in to the adventure, and so the stories gently ripple out… the land is "re-storied" and people's connections with place and nature are strengthened and enriched. Kathryn Parsons Handcrafts and simple tools are at the heart of my work. I've always loved exploring what I can make different materials and processes do, right from a very young age. To me it's an exciting, fascinating adventure! And so I use a wide variety of processes and materials, depending on what best communicates the story... from eco-printed poems and sugar shoes to photography and mixed media sculptures. To reduce the environmental impact of my work I often use old or natural objects. And in very small quantities I use porcelain too, because for me it speaks deeply of the beauty, fragility and strength of the natural world. Much of my work is created to be displayed as temporary interventions in the place that it speaks about... adding richness and something new to see, while offering new ways for visitors to respond and engage. Kathryn Parsons My first career was in teaching, in primary, further and adult education - including teaching sugarcraft and competing in international sugarcraft competitions! Gradually I learned to listen to my heart, and follow its desire to use my creativity and love of learning to share fascinating stories of nature and place. I delight in nurturing the creativity of others and sharing my adventures through writing, workshops, demonstrations and talks. In 2022, I launched NatureCraft online mini workshops - a space to connect with nature, creativity and other nature-loving people from across the globe. Exhibitions, Residencies and Site-Specific Artworks I have exhibited at The National Centre for Craft & Design (solo and group exhibition), and created site-specific artworks for Burghley House, University of Leicester, John Clare Trust, Derby Museum’s porcelain gallery and on nature reserves. In 2012 one of my artworks was selected for “Inspired by…” exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. See C.V. for more details. Currently I am Artist in Residence with Langdyke Countryside Trust, a wildlife conservation and heritage charity. I tell the stories of local volunteers and the places, wildlife and heritage that they work to protect. Kidz@Play is an established family business for over 30 years originating in Maynooth Co. Kildare. Kidz@Play Kilcock began in Scoil Chóca Naofa and through this, formed strong partnerships with primary schools in the area. The partnership with the Primary school is positive for children and families with many children moving on to primary school from Kidz@Play Playschool. We also operate an afterschool within the school where children can play relax and complete homework with the familiar Kidz@Play team. Kidz@Play History Evelyn developed the business originally from a home-based playschool. Through training and development as well as being the chairperson of the national organisation IPPA Evelyn developed and moved firstly to a rented unit in Maynooth and then to a full day purpose setting in Maynooth. The development of Kidz@Play Kilcock, over 8 years ago brought a unique partnership within the primary school and the service is now embedded within the Kilcock community. Evelyn holds a MA in Humanities in Early Childhood Care & Education, a BA ECEC, delivers training and lectures in the field of early childhood care and education. Evelyn also worked for the Department of Education and Skills inspecting the educational quality dimension to early years practice. Jess has a unique experience background as she came to work as a four-week-old baby with her mother as she ran the original home-based playschool. So, we can say Jess was born into the business! Jess continued to expand her knowledge by obtaining an Honours degree in Montessori Education age 3-12, gained experience in different settings, Montessori preschools and primary schools, play based playschools and primary school junior classes and successfully managed summer camps for large companies. Jess holds a MA in Education specialising in the Early Years (2019) from Maynooth University. Jess manages the Kilcock Kidz@Play service delivering both preschool and afterschool. Jess took over the helm as general manager and owner during Evelyn’s inspection period. Now together this vastly experienced mother daughter team have pooled skills and experience to form a Company that will guarantee the highest quality in the delivery of education and care in the Newtown hall site. Together with a highly qualified staff team which are experienced qualified and working in Kidz@Play for many years. Early year’s educators working in Kidz@Play are experienced and hold Honours degrees, QQI Level 5 and 6 and both services have LINC Co-coordinators as inclusive services. As a member of Early Childhood Ireland, we create a welcoming environment for children through our play based emergent curriculum where children’s interests, development and rights are central to our philosophy and in line with the national curriculum framework for early years Aistear. The testimonials of local families to the quality of education and care in Kidz@Play can be seen in returning family and friends over the years with several parents who attended Kidz@Play themselves now sending their own children. Kidz@Play Maynooth Within the Maynooth community Kidz@Play have made solid links with local primary schools and support the children’s transitions to national school. Kidz@Play also support the local post-primary school through fundraising events such as cake sales and sponsorship for the musical and sponsored walk. Transition year students are also always welcome in Kidz@Play during work experience. Nearing the end of his undergraduate degree at Oxford University, our Director, William Humphreys, reflected on the life-changing opportunities that had been afforded to him, and the countless avenues now open ahead of him, as a result of his time at Oxford. Affected profoundly by the transformational effect this place and this education had had on his life, he started discussions with his brother and Co-Director George about how these same opportunities and experiences might be offered to students looking to make decisions about their own futures. George and William opened the first ORA summer school in 2005, made up of 35 students, a number of whom are still in touch with us and each other today! That summer was full of academic energy and progress, friendship, cultural expansion, and fun! It became clear that the opportunity to use summer holidays to learn in an entirely different way from school was both exciting and inspiring to students from all over the world. Energised by the opportunity to bring something new to the world of education, our most popular courses were born and aptly named ‘New Perspectives’ and ‘Broadening Horizons’. We build and retain close relationships with our students and their parents, listening carefully to their experiences and ambitions. These relationships have become an important driver of our growth and we are always thrilled to hear from alumni about the paths they have taken and the successes they have enjoyed. By 2008, we were accredited by the British Council, had assembled a committed team of staff and teachers excited by this new philosophy, and were welcoming hundreds of students each year to Oxford to study a growing number of courses. From 2010 onwards, with students wanting to return to the programme but keen to see more of the world, we began programmes in Cambridge, and later St Andrews, London, and Yale. In 2017 we launched programmes for younger students, from age 8, as well as courses for students aged 19 and over, many of whom were former students wishing to continue their education with us. We have been awarded the BETA Award for Best Educational Product an astonishing five times, and have been proud recipients of The Queen’s Award for Enterprise three times. We have an extraordinary team of staff, all entirely committed to the transformational effect education has on a young life. These range from the counsellors on our campuses who guide students through each day and offer insights into university life, to the teachers who get to know our students well enough to introduce them to the precise topics and ideas that will inspire them, to the office staff who work with parents to ensure their children are happy, safe, and make the most of every opportunity presented to them in their time with us. Of course 2020 was not part of anyone’s plan. When it became clear in March that we would be unable to guarantee the safety and wellbeing of our international student body that summer, we were forced to suspend our programmes for the first time in our history. Disappointed but not disheartened, we decided to rise to the challenge and move our courses online, with the firm commitment to preserving the interactivity, the excitement and the academic rigour that characterises our summer programmes. We were blown away by the dedication of our teaching staff that summer, by the positivity and intelligence of our students, and by the enduring commitment to learning and aspiration. With this confirmation that the ORA philosophy thrives even in the face of such challenges, and with a firm commitment to innovation in a fast-changing world, we are extremely excited about the future. Education, and working globally, has never been more important and we are proud to be at the forefront of innovation in international education.

Welcome to The Christie School of Oncology’s Integrative Therapies Training Unit (ITTU). As a world renowned ITTU, we are delighted to offer a range of educational events including standalone workshops, diplomas and conferences for integrative therapists, complementary therapists, Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) and researchers. The content of some of our events are also suited to nurses and medical staff. At the ITTU, we have been proudly supporting all our students for more than 20 years, providing them with training that is well researched, informative and evidence-based and reflective of up-to-date clinical practice. All our educational events are designed to provide students with continuing professional development (CPD) certifications and to equip them with practical knowledge and skills that they can integrate into the healthcare they provide to their own patients, as well as carers. Our team of both internal and external fully-qualified facilitators are all passionate about producing and delivering an extensive programme of events, which we are sure you will find informative and inspiring.
