Sheffield Contributing School

sheffield contributing school

Sheffield is a rural, contributing primary school with a decile rating of 9. The roll is stable, and has ranged from around 85 - 110 pupils over recent years. There are 5 classes, and the teachers are supported by support staff. The school is situated 60 kilometres west of Christchurch, nestled among the foothills of the Southern Alps. Lakes, rivers, ski-fields, national parks, Christchurch and countless other recreational activities are less than 30 minutes away. The school grounds are extensive. Ongoing landscaping and property initiatives have developed further native bush areas and places for the students to work and play. The school buildings comprise five traditional open plan classrooms. A library, an administration area, learning support room, an adventure playground, a sandpit, and a new resource building complete the permanent fixtures. The school is well resourced in all curriculum areas. Particular emphasis in recent times has been the development of high quality ICT equipment. Each classroom has access to a television, a large number of laptops and iPads and a learning management system. Special needs assistance has been built into the school budget. Teacher aides and part-time teachers work with individuals and groups of children for short blocks of time, sometimes withdrawing children, other times working within class programmes. A number of children have ongoing resourcing for individual special needs and have part-time teacher or teacher aide assistance funded by the Ministry. Teachers implement programmes which extend and challenge children of all abilities.Support services attend the school regularly. These include the Public Health Nurse, Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour, Speech Language Therapist and other specialists. The school P.E.A.K. values are at the heart of everything we do at Sheffield School. As a result, relationships between students, staff, board and parents are positive and the school enjoys fantastic support from the Sheffield community. The Board of Trustees and PTA are very proactive, supporting a wide range of initiatives which benefit the students. Parents are involved in many aspect of the programme including PTA, fundraising, sport, camps, transport, classroom programmes, library and options programmes. The children are a pleasure to teach. They are well supported from home and come to school keen to learn. There are very few behaviour problems in classrooms or in the playground and bullying is not tolerated. Children’s interests are broad and include athletics, swimming, tennis, cricket, netball, rugby, soccer, hockey and basketball. Keas, Scouts and Guides are operating in the area. There are many cultural activities available including a dance school, speech and drama clubs, gymnastics, art classes and various music tutors. Sheffield School maintains close ties with the other schools in the Malvern district, coming together regularly for sporting and cultural events. The school has recently participated in ICTPD project, as part of the Malvern cluster of schools. ICTPD (Information and Communication Technology) is a Ministry of Education funded initiative, which offers exceptional professional development opportunities to those involved.

Melissa Liversedge Yoga

melissa liversedge yoga

I first became aware of yoga as a child. My grandmother used to tell me to practise ‘yoga breathing’ (long, slow inhalations and exhalations) if I ever felt worried or unwell. She swore by the benefits of yoga, both physically and mentally, and although I never actually saw her practise a single pose, I considered her to be the ultimate yoga guru! After University, I worked in the City as a stockbroker, at which point I officially started going to yoga classes, seeking a counter balance to the busy lifestyle I was living. I went to all sorts of different classes - whatever the gym had on offer and whatever I could find locally: flow yoga, power yoga, bikram yoga, sivananda yoga. I soon realised that yoga could be quite a different experience depending on the type and the teacher. I had the good fortune of meeting a Japanese colleague who swore by the benefits of Iyengar Yoga. She introduced me to a senior Iyengar teacher, Maxine Tobias, who completely transformed my experience of yoga. She had spent many years under the guidance of BKS Iyengar himself and was very inspirational. I was amazed how the Iyengar method gives you a deep understanding of your own body, its strengths and its weaknesses. Although the classes looked easier, and you got to use belts and blocks, actually I found them the most challenging. Furthermore, the classes were full of real people: all ages, shapes and sizes. Each person came to understand their limitations and their strengths and were on their own journey. It wasn’t about the gymnastics of the poses, it was about the relationship between the body and the mind. After several years of practice, I applied to do my teacher training course in 2005, but then found out I was pregnant. Life and babies took over, so it was only after another 10 years and a new life in Hampshire, I felt I was ready to reapply to train as an Iyengar Teacher. The training course was long and challenging, as it should be when you are dealing with other people’s bodies, but I was lucky enough to have one of the best and most experienced teachers living nearby, Judith Jones, who pushed and encouraged me to aim for precision and quality of teaching. Judith has spent many years visiting Pune and the Iyengar family, and has always been heavily involved with the Iyengar Yoga Association UK. She is truly remarkable and continues to be a great inspiration & mentor. I am currently preparing for the next level of qualification within the Iyengar Yoga system and hope to continue my yoga journey for as long as I am able. I have a great husband, 3 kids, 2 dogs, and a fish called Martin. I like the sea, travel, fashion, shoes and people. Family is the most important thing to me.

Horden Youth And Community Centre

horden youth and community centre

Peterlee

Horden used to be a mining village, and back in the Sixties, it was the pit that defined what our community was. Young people were a vital part of that group, and the Centre you see today grew out of the Youth Club that started in 1966 in the renovated pit canteen — and the Girls' Infant School (later a Mixed Infants, but the girls don't like to remember that part). Horden Youth Club moved from their first building into one on Sunderland Road, and from there to a "hut" in the school playground. When the Infant School closed its doors to little ones, Durham County Council offered the facility to the Youth Club. By the time they were ready to move in, in the late Seventies, rain had seeped into the building and where the pool table now stands in the main hall, a huge hole was dug to make the floor safe and re-lay the beautiful parquet flooring. When the repair and refurbishment was finished, Horden Youth Centre was born. It's all right — the hole was filled in, but if ever we tell you that a former staff member is still here in spirit, please don't ask too many questions… It was decided that two rooms could be offered to other people in Horden and so, for a while, what are now the dining room and training room were used for all sorts of activities leaving the rest of the building for the young people. It was at that point that we became Horden Youth and Community Centre, but it was several years before the "Youth" and the "Community" bits joined together in the way you see us now. Many changes have taken place in the intervening years, not least becoming first a registered charity and, later, a limited company. And now? Regardless of any surface changes, what we are at our core doesn't change at all. Quite simply, we are here to offer pursuits and experiences to the local community which encourage choice and personal development. By keeping costs down and creating a warm and friendly environment, as well as operating an 'open door' policy for anyone who requires help, advice, signposting or support — and often just someone to listen — we strive, every day, to provide a hub for people to become involved with new people and the wider community around them. In keeping with our motto 'from the cradle (almost) to the grave', we offer services for all age groups from the very young to the elderly. Take a deep breath, now… Our Nursery provides affordable child care for 2 to 5 year olds; the tweenies are well catered for with dance and gymnastics classes; the Youth Club caters for 11 to 19 year-olds; there is usually a huge variety of classes and activities for adults; and apart from our Luncheon Club, Friday Afternoon Bingo Club and Gentle Fitness group, we are planning even more events for the over 65s. This will include a Fifties-style coffee bar complete with 'frothy coffee' and period music, so keep an eye on the Centre notices, website, newsletters and local press for further details as we get them! Other future plans include 'Hole in the Wall Enterprises', a social enterprise venture that has grown out of our clippy mat group; open days; fairs (that's table-top sales, not waltzers and dodgems — but you never know!); and, of course, an ever-growing list of activities and courses. We know our past and our present, and are ever-hopeful that we will go from strength to strength in our future. We want people to use the Centre because that's what it's here for. We need to know what the community wants from us, and we need the people of Horden to tell us. We invite you — whether you want to join us and join in, offer your services, or complain that we're getting it all wrong — to come in for a chat any time and help us continue to help Horden — the way Horden wants!
