Eureka Secondary School belongs to a worldwide community of educational service, reaching back to the founding of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy in 1827, now under the trusteeship of CEIST. The Sisters of Mercy first provided secondary education for girls in Kells in classrooms attached to the Convent in 1924. The school moved to the existing site at Eureka House in 1956. The school kept the name Eureka. It is assumed that the landlord who owned Eureka House, had a classical education and would have learned about Archimedes. From the beginning, the school provided a comprehensive and imaginative curriculum, and from an early stage taught Honours Mathematics, Physics, German, Art and Music at a time when these subjects were not commonly available in secondary schools. The school continues to provide a wide range of subjects, and has successfully introduced additional programmes such as the Transition Year Programme, the Leaving Certificate Applied Programme, and the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme.

In August 1996, Kathmandu University (K.U.) opened a Department of Music in Bhaktapur, where ethnomusicology (B.A. and M.A.) and practical music (North Indian classical and Nepalese local traditions) are taught to Nepalese and foreign students. The then German President, Dr. Roman Herzog, inaugurated the department during his state visit to Nepal on 29th November 1996. The academic courses are conducted by an experienced ethnomusicologist from Germany and lecturers from the U.S. and Nepal. Teaching staff for performance training includes local musicians and dancers. An exchange of academic teachers and students has been agreed upon and carried out between Kathmandu University and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. SOAS recognizes the exams passed at the Bhaktapur Department of Music for internal purposes. Presently, the K.U. Department of Music is the only university department in South Asia conducting full-fledged course in ethnomusicology. To date (September 2014), students from thirty five different countries have studied at the Bhaktapur department.

I am a fifty-five year old German citizen, who moved to England to study Buddhist philosophy eighteen years ago. My home is in Thornby, a small village between Leicester and Northampton. Due to increasing requests tuition became my main occupation in 2013. I began tutoring during my chemistry study, from which I attained a Masters of Science in Chemistry (first class degree) and a PhD in Biochemistry (first class degree). One of my pupils was a medical student, who did not like chemistry. He tried to memorise all chemical formulae for his exam. After the basic rules were explained he was able to derive equations without much effort. Later he said „I did not know chemistry was so easy“. With each new client I begin with a thorough assessment: What kind of person he or she is, what basic knowledge is present and what are the main problem areas? Then a tutoring plan is suggested to reach the goal in a reasonable time frame. My emphasis lies on building up a solid foundation of knowledge and the skills to apply it. LESSONS Lessons are individually tailored to the needs of the student and designed to be entertaining yet challenging. Their interview style keeps the tutee focused and engaged. Examples of daily life are incorporated and comparisons drawn with situations from sport and hobbies. Sometimes we even do small chemistry experiments (don’t worry parents – only harmless ones – the kitchen will not blow up!).
