There is no doubt that our native pollinators are in decline, and honeybees are struggling with environmental pressures and intensive production. Beekeeping is not just about looking after our colonies, it is also about how we can use our knowledge to help&nbsp;all&nbsp;pollinators, and other wildlife while we are at it. Our gardens are increasingly becoming oases and it is possible to make a material difference, even on a small scale.
Honeybees are great ambassadors for the insect world, and by understanding and raising awareness of their needs, we can help both them and other species too.
All bees need both pollen and nectar, so we will look at how we can incorporate the most favourable plants into our existing outdoor spaces, and look at plants which give the most numerous benefits. Understanding the relationship between bees and flowers is important if we are going to maximise the efficacy of what we have on offer, and there will be some surprises given the misinformation and confusion surrounding pollinators.
On this course, we will cover the following topics:

<li>which bees need which forage</li>
<li>the bee annual cycle: the how and when of bee feeding across the species</li>
<li>where to plant to help bees feed effectively</li>
<li>free plants: identifying the best ones you may already have</li>
<li>sourcing plants sustainably for a pollinator-friendly garden</li>
<li>low-maintenance options for large-scale bee food</li>
<li>local surrounds: what else is out there for bees?</li>
<li>bee hotels, bug boxes, hibernacula and other habitat: which work?</li>
<li>how to ensure your hives have enough food through the year</li>
</ul>
If you keep bees, want to keep bees, or just want to make your garden as bee-friendly as possible, this course will equip you with the knowledge to go home and make a difference to the forage availability in your garden.
&pound;40 per person for the 1.5 hour session, or &pound;75 for two booking at the same time. Gift vouchers are available if you&rsquo;d like to give this course as a present. Discounts are available for group bookings. Courses run from 2-3.30pm.
