The LYF is an enterprising, small charity – but one that achieves big results.Despite the dreadful challenges for so many of us throughout 2020-21, this period has marked a very challenging – but a positive time for the LYF. We’ve been working hard to get our ‘Open Sourcing’ Farmer Radio initiative out there! Basically, this means that some of the poorest farming communities in the world will be able to set up their own ‘Farmers’ Voice Radio Stations’ – using the free resources and help that we’ll be able to provide! As a small charity, we don’t believe in feathering our own nest. And we do believe that all our learning and the resources that we have created through our ground-breaking programme should get to those who need it the most. At no cost to them. So, if you head over to our new Farmers’ Voice Radio website, you can see exactly which countries we’re now working in and what we’ve been doing there. And if you’re from a farming community yourself – you can also access the resources that we’ve created with your group in mind … Something positive this year – at last! For over 35 years, Hackney City Farm has been giving the local community the opportunity to experience farming right in the heart of the city. We offer children and adults the chance to get up close to a range of farmyard animals; see, smell and plant vegetables and other food plants; and learn new skills. As a city farm in London, we are dedicated to helping people learn about food, nature and the environment. Our unique setting inspires children and adults to participate in our courses, workshops and lessons and leave with new knowledge, friendships and inspiration. We receive about 3 school visits a week – school groups, like everyone else can visit for free! We offer specific workshops designed to take learning a step further, such as Growing Food, Habitats – Mini-beasts and Chicken and Egg. We are also home to a unique school for up to ten young people (age 13-17) who require a tailor-made approach to their education. Our curriculum is based around basic skills, practical and vocational learning, PHSE and one-to-one or group mentoring.

Birch Bark has been used for making many objects in times gone by, with its antibacterial properties and breathability helping foods to stay fresh. It can be used to boil water over an open camp fire, yet the natural oils within also make it an excellent tinder when dry! The flexibility of Birch Bark has made it attractive as a material to cover canoes with in the American North West.

Hall Farm Eastoft has been farmed by the Coulman family for some 150 years or more and over time the land has produced a wide range of arable crops and been home to cattle, pigs, chickens and more recently alpacas. Extending to around 235 hectares (575 acres) of land the farm grow wheat, oilseed rape, sugar beet, potatoes and grass, as well as maintaining an extensive environmental scheme to enhance the natural habitat. It is important to us to farm to the highest environmental, sustainable and welfare standards which means we subscribe to a range of key industry standards and generate much of our energy and resources from sustainable sources. As members of Red Tractor Assurance schemes for both crop production and our pig production, as well as Freedom Food, British Quality Pork and Global Animal Partnership schemes for our pigs, we ensure that all our produce meets high production standards and enters the food chain. We generate all our power from our Solar PV system, powering lights, feed systems, grain driers and our vehicles and use a Biomass boiler to provide heat. In addition, around 90% of our water use is either borehole sourced or from rainwater harvesting ensuring we minimise our use of mains, treated water and rely on naturally produced water. The farm has hosted educational visits for many years, supported by Natural England’s environmental schemes, and has developed this educational support since 2017 into a social farm engaging with young people and adults, empowering them to develop skills to enrich their learning, wellbeing and social life. With our focus on sustainable, environmentally friendly farming coupled with our increasing community of social farmers, here at Hall Farm Eastoft we aim to provide a community farming operation benefiting the environment and the local community.

Crimsham Farm is a community farming project, spearheaded and run by Veterans of the ArmedForces and young adults with learning difficulties. We run a variety of weekly clubs that engage with the local community, offering a completely inclusive experience for all. The site itself has been structured on a needs led basis, built and improved at every step through engagement with our users and the wider community, additions made at their request, making us the most unique farming project in the county. Crimsham Farm also acts as an alternative education provision, providing a space away from school for students who struggle to fit with the models of mainstream education and as a therapeutic centre for students with Special Educational Needs. By 2021 we will be host to a Veterans RV where members of the Armed Forces can come for mental health assistance, support groups, drop in centres, breakfast clubs and general information and signposting to help with every day life. With a passion for the outdoors, education and needs, Crimsham Farm is pioneering the way forward in positive therapeutic interactions in a safe and disabled friendly environment, providing a space that cannot be found anywhere else in Sussex in which the local community no matter the cause, can come and join in the fun, whether that’s through reduction of social isolation, inclusion in activities or just somewhere to come for a cuppa and a chat, it can be found here on the farm any time of the day, any time of the year! We have a huge range of activities to engage in, all of which can be found here on the website, and the site is expanding and improving all the time, so if you want to get involved, but cant find your niche, drop us a message or pop by for a chat. If you are a school or charitable institution helping those struggling with mental health or disability based needs, why not come and see what we can offer your clients and students. We truly are a one stop shop for all! Hi Im Jess a ceramics artist from West Sussex, I live very close to the Sussex downs and to the sea ; I use aerial images of the downs and the surrounding landscapes looking at the changing seasons, this inform the my work at I make . I love corroded of surfaces, the contrast of rough and smooth line, patterns and texture that are found on stones, wood, glass and metal that has been weathered and broken down from natural erosion. I like to see how the landscape changes from month to month and the effects that farming have on the land , from a aerial view you can see the patterns made by man or nature in the ground and this is how i make up my patterns on the surface of the clay. My work take the form of decorative sculptural vessels for the home, wall hangings and bowls, my work is slab build out of a stoneware clay, I use underglazes and oxide on the surface of my work and fired to around 1260. I also offer teaching at me small pottery studio at Field Place Pottery in Worthing I run group workshop and one to one session,please get in contect if you would like to learn more. Welcome to the home of Adam Henson. Cotswold Farm Park was opened in 1971 by Adam's father Joe to help protect some of our rare breeds of farm animal. Aged 30, Joe Henson and his old school friend John Neave take over the tenancy of Bemborough Farm, then owned by Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Short of capital, in the short term they needed to devise a low capital farming system and so began growing barley, with a few commercial sheep for the rough banks. The Conservation Area of the Farm Park is opened, with a guest appearance from Ellie Harrison. Countryfile celebrates its 25th anniversary on our television screens and Adam teams up with celebrity chef Nigel Slater on ‘Nigel and Adam’s Farm Kitchen’, where they join forces to show the process of producing and cooking Britain’s favourite foods.
