The school vision drives all that we seek to do on a daily basis and is therefore of central importance to help guide us in how we work, learn and treat one another in our school community. Governance operates at two different levels at Abbeywood Community School as it is an academy and part of The Olympus Academy Trust. The school has its own School Improvement Committee (SIC) made up of Trust Governors which is accountable to and reports to the Olympus Board of Trustees. The secondary lead Trustee often attends the SIC meeting and some Trust Governors in Olympus also attend the Board’s sub-committees. This means Trust Governors can be directly involved in decision making at Board level, and have the opportunity to input and collaborate in all key areas that may impact schools. Abbeywood Community School Improvement Committee The Trust Governors at Abbeywood Community School work closely with the school’s Senior Leadership Team and Staff to develop the vision and aims of the school community. They seek to raise standards and achievement through the appropriate use of all available resources. The Governors’ responsibilities are to: Provide strategic direction for the work and improvement of the school. Support, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the school. Ensure accountability for standards and quality of education in the school. Governance is assessed by OFSTED in its Leadership and Management judgement about the school and so is an integral part of the running of the school. The School Improvement Committee consists of people from a variety of backgrounds who represent different areas of the school and local community. Each Trust Governor is appointed for a four year term with all their work being done on a voluntary basis. Currently our Trust Governors have extensive experience in Education, Business, Engineering and Technology. Governors meet as a full team at six meetings during the school year but as well as having a commitment to attend these meetings, Governors will also meet with students and parents, carry out Governor walks around the school, monitor the school improvement agenda, and meet with staff. The school is always keen to hear from people who may be interested in finding out more about our work or in becoming a Trust Governor themselves. Derwent Training Association exists for the sole purpose of delivering engineering training. Founded in 1988 by employers, it has fulfilled that objective for over 30 years. Based in Malton, North Yorkshire, Derwent Training Association recruits and trains apprentices for approximately 100 employers across the region. In 2019-20 our timely achievement for Engineering Apprenticeships were well above the national average: 76% timely achievement for Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeships (15 points above the national average) 71% timely achievement for Level 2 Fabrication and Welding (9 points above the national average) Engineering and Manufacturing remains a local priority area for the York and North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership, and Derwent Training is committed to delivering on this priority. The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) is the professional organisation that represents this diverse workforce. We are a charity with more than 4,600 members drawn from healthcare, academia and industry. What do our members do? Some help to ensure that patients are correctly diagnosed and safely treated for illnesses such as cancer and stroke through their work on imaging and radiotherapy. Some develop, maintain and manage medical equipment such as MRI and ultrasound scanners, X-ray machines, drug delivery systems and patient monitors.

John graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a Master’s degree in Ocean Engineering. His work experience includes the oil industry as well as government, but he went to the Marine Institute from the Faculty of Engineering. He now teaches mechanical engineering courses in the School of Maritime Studies as well as the Bachelor of Technology. For the past 10 years he has been working and publishing on the development and application of e-learning technologies and methods. John is a recipient of the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching at Memorial University, the granting of this award being based largely on courses he delivers using technologies like the Möbius Platform. The Defence College is a UK-based organisation specialising on providing technical short courses to engineers and applied science professionals working in defence sector. It also offers engineering R&D consultancy services. The organisation is served by a number of highly experienced academics specialising in the defence technical educations. One such example is Dr Bidur Khanal. He is a senior academic with a long and established track record of teaching engineering courses in UK Higher Education sector. In particular, he has developed a niche in teaching/training defence engineering courses. He was working at Cranfield University’s Centre for Defence Engineering (CDE) as a lecturer in Complex Weapons, where he spent a number of years teaching defence engineering topics in military land vehicle propulsion, transmission system design, weapons design, and fighting vehicle design. He still supports CDE’s courses. Dr Khanal has delivered short courses to defence organizations (currently to US & UK Army and Canadian defence personnels) as an external consultant, and the teaching are focused on weapons engineering courses e.g. Military Engine Technologies, Military Tracked Vehicle Transmission Systems and Designs, Gun System Designs, Fighting Vehicle Design etc. Dr Khanal is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a member of Royal Aeronautical Society, UK. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK. He is also an active researcher in computational fluid dynamics, and has published numerous research articles in journals and conference proceedings. Some of his most recent research projects include CFD studies on large calibre gun muzzle brake flowfield, thrust reverser design, High-Pressure turbine blade design and transient missile release from a military aircraft. We are also supported by Major Santa Pun MBE, Major Pun is a senior advisor to Defence College. His experience in UK Military and continuing service in UK MOD means we are strategically supported by a defence professional with life long experience in defence.
