Well Minerva was the Goddess of Art & Trade and she seemed a very appropriate figurehead for a business based around sharing knowledge about art. What do we do? Our interests. We stock Annie Sloan & Polyvine Paints - available for Click & Collect. Founded by Artist Lottie Cole we host masterclasses taught by artists and artisans as well as regular weekly classes. All the classes are taught by professional full-time practitioners, who love to share their knowledge and skill. The classes are open to all levels, unless stated, and kept to a very limited number. This keeps the classes intimate and allows for everyone to have sufficient help and encouragement in a friendly atmosphere. As well as learning and expanding skills our goal is to send participants away refreshed and invigorated by sharing a creative experience. Maggi and Sarah created two projects to engage teenagers during the summer holidays, encouraging creativity and the development of new skills. The pack included a hard-backed sketchbook with a workbook of suggested art based activities, also Derwent Arts kindly donated some drawing equipment. The second project included a fully illustrated instruction booklet, coordinated fabrics, ribbons, needles and threads to create a decorative length of bunting, which could be customised with applique lettering or imagery. The scope of these projects could reach beyond the original pack and the summer holiday period, inspiring children to consider further individual projects. The quality of the pack and its learning materials encourages young people to work independently and the workbooks encouraged recipients to explore their own personal projects. The packs also contain Crafts Council project ideas to inspire children and teenagers, and support material for those who may wish to embark on the Arts Awards scheme. ‘Recreate Make’ intend to develop an Arts Award offering in the near future. With the help of the West Cumbria Learning Centre, Maggi and Sarah were able to distribute projects to 38 young people across West Cumbria who it was felt would find them beneficial. We gave the packs out during the summer holiday of 2021 to help additional homeschooling ideas for the arts. They were given to children from Wigton to Whitehaven, the majority centred around the Workington area.

…I’ve been painting almost all my life, as I didn’t stop when I left school. There were many years when I’d only do the odd sketch or painting as ‘real life’ took over, but I always wanted more. Once I’d made the decision to try to realise my childhood ambitions I gave myself up to it as completely as real life would allow. It’s taken a long time, but now I make art part of my daily life. Even though …It’s now ‘the job’, I still get a big kick out of drawing and painting. There’s nothing better that looking at what you’ve achieved and see it looking back at you. Knowing exhibition sales help with animal conservation is another bonus, but it’s equally exciting to get a pet portrait commission from someone, as it is to sell something in exhibition. A lot of my time is spent teaching art, mostly to retired people. I Believe …art plays a very important role in keeping people healthy. As a teaching Artist, I want to share my life-times experience of art with other people so they can enjoy it too. My workshops and classes are growing in popularity and it’s very satisfying, knowing people are choosing to learn from me. I’d toyed with the idea of teaching art for many years, but it wasn’t until after my dad died that I decided to give it a go.

The Museum of English Rural Life is owned and managed by the University of Reading. We use our diverse and surprising collection to explore how the skills and experiences of farmers and craftspeople, past and present, can help shape our lives now and into the future. We work alongside rural people, local communities and specialist researchers to create displays and activities that engage with important debates about the future of food and the ongoing relevance of the countryside to all our lives. We were established by academics in the Department of Agriculture in 1951 to capture and record the rapidly changing countryside following World War II. The Museum is based on Redlands Road in a building originally designed by Sir Alfred Waterhouse in 1880 for local businessman Alfred Palmer, of the Huntley & Palmer biscuit company. The house then became St Andrews Hall of Residence in 1911, and in 2005 a modern extension was built onto the house for the Museum. The Museum was awarded £1.8million from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in 2014 for the redevelopment of the galleries, reopening in October 2016. The redevelopment strengthens and renews our links with agriculture as well as enhancing our position in supporting engagement opportunities for students and academics across a wide variety of disciplines, nationally and internationally. The MERL and Reading Museum are currently in a strategic partnership as part of the Arts Council England National Portfolio 2018-2022. As Museums Partnership Reading we work together to provide cultural opportunities for Reading’s young people and diverse communities, through schools, volunteering, digital engagement and exhibitions.
