A recording of Alastair's live online performance during the Covid-19 crisis for the World Storytelling Cafe Alastair K. Daniel is a performance storyteller, researcher, writer and consultant in storytelling (and related fields) working in the UK and abroad. Following twelve years touring schools in the UK and the Low Countries with The Story Tent, in 2010 Alastair made the move from professional storytelling to academia. In the summer of 2022, Alastair ended his term as Principal Lecturer in Primary English at the University of Roehampton in 2022 to focus on storytelling once more, and develop his work as an independent scholar. Alastair's 'Story Tent' style brings traditional and literary texts to life through physicalisation, puppets, masks, costumes, artefacts, rhymes and songs - creating performances in which the distinction between performer and audience become blurred. The Story Tent project came out of Alastair's use of storytelling as a teaching strategy with children with profound emotional and behavioural difficulties. He found that storytelling (contrasted with story-reading) provided a unique method of drawing children, who often had difficulties with imaginative play, into new worlds. As a consultant and researcher, Alastair has worked with a range of organisations and specialises in the application of oral storytelling in educational contexts and the use of narrative analysis to evaluate educational programmes.

The Grafton Academy of Fashion Design was founded in 1938 by Pauline Elizabeth Keller Clotworthy. Born in 1912, Pauline was brought up in a large house in Glenageary, with several generations of family around her. Pauline showed a keen interest in sketching and writing and went on to study at Dublin's Metropolitan School of Art (now the National College of Art and Design). It was there that one of Pauline's tutors, artist Seán Keating cautioned her on turning her life drawing into fashion illustrations, this only encouraged Pauline who then went on to study the art of representing fabrics and textures using watercolour in Browns Paris School of Fashion in London. Upon her return to Dublin, Pauline was advised to further educate herself on how to realise her fashion drawings. Pauline returned to London to train at the British institute of Dress Designing. Pauline, understanding that she had benefited from an education that was not available in Ireland, decided she wanted to share the skills she had acquired. Shortly after graduating in 1938, Pauline established the Grafton Academy, Ireland's first design school and within a year it had staged its debut show. Early graduates from the college include Neilli Mulcahy, Ib Jorgensen and Clodagh Phillips, all of whom made a significant contribution in promoting Irish fashion culture, both home and abroad.

SOPHIE RAE IS A MURAL ARTIST WORKING PREDOMINANTLY IN BRISTOL, LONDON + THE SOUTH WEST SPECIALISING IN BOLD, COLOURFUL, BOTANICAL, ABSTRACT DESIGNS Sophie Rae loves gliding a paintbrush across a smooth surface, transforming bland grey walls into beautiful works of art. It is truly where she gets in the flow. She loves working on walls outside and in, large scale murals as well as smaller ones. She’s painted murals in gardens, cafes, bars, restaurants, offices, schools, shop and high street facades and hoardings, to name a few. Drawing inspiration from plants (glorious plants) and enlarging, and playing with abstraction until a sweet balanced composition emerges. As well as mural painting Sophie creates beautiful prints, lovingly handcrafted, without using a press. Shapes are sketched and refined, then cut by hand with a craft knife into stencils. A roller then applies ink in the gaps. This helps give each print its irregularities. If you’re after learning from Sophie Rae she can be found sharing her unique printing technique, inspiring and igniting creativity through (fairly) regularly teaching workshops. ECA has always been a place of experimentation and collaboration, celebrated for enabling students from different disciplines to work alongside and with each other, and for creating strong linkages with other institutions. We trace our history back to the Trustees’ Academy founded in the 1760s which, over the course of the next century, operated from some of the most iconic buildings in the city, including the University’s Old College and what is now the Royal Scottish Academy. The first Professorship in an ECA subject area was created for Music in 1839 in the name of John Reid, with the Watson Gordon Chair of Fine Art founded some forty years later, the first of its kind in the British Isles and a turning point in the teaching of the History of Art. Following the establishment of the Reid Concert series in 1841, which continues to this day, the Reid Concert Hall was built in 1859. We’ve been known as Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) since 1906, following a major reorganisation of higher art education in Scotland. At the time, we were governed by the city Council and divided into four Schools: Drawing and Painting, Design and Crafts, Architecture, and Sculpture. We moved into what is still our Main Building in 1909, when the first of our annual Revel parties took place and, by 1913, our Cast Collection had been installed in the Sculpture Court.
