The GBdirect website has undergone a serious overhaul both in design and content. We hope that the new look is both better and faster than previous versions. We also hope that you can find more valuable information about us, our work and our interests. Our website is, like many of the commercial sites we design and host, generated using a set of build tools. These are a set of scripts that build the HTML files from ‘source’ and ‘template’ files. The scripts ensure all images have the correct information and are copied to the right place. It also allows us to change the layout or look of our whole site simply by changing one file.

maisie smith

Maisie Smith is a designer living and working in Manchester, who specialises in metalwork. Maisie graduated from Manchester School of Art with a degree in Three Dimensional Design. During her time studying, she took an interest in silversmithing, focussing on traditional techniques like raising and forging. In her work, she explores the connection between human and object, playing with the notion of function and encouraging her audience to question objects they interact with on a daily basis. Since graduating, Maisie has found fulfillment in teaching and sharing techniques as much as practicing them. In the future, she hopes to focus her attention on projects that explore the different ways art and design can bring communities together.

With its friendly team of staff and volunteers, it has been celebrating, exhibiting and nurturing all kinds of artists since being established on 31 October 1951 by local businessman Thomas Burton, and Hubert Coop, a successful artist. “The Burton at Bideford is a gallery and museum of international note, in a unique setting of a historic port on the north coast of Devon.”

Urbed (Urbanism, Environment and Design) Ltd to close-Urbed Trust unaffected It is with great sadness that we announce that our partner organisation Urbed (Urbanism, Environment and Design) Ltd will close early in 2023. The employee-owned cooperative finds itself with no option, following the completion of several projects and operating in an incredibly difficult post COVID environment, particularly with public sector tendering. Urbed (Urbanism, Environment and Design) Ltd formed in 2006, and grew out of the original Urbed (Urban and Economic Development) Ltd from 1976. It is one of the last surviving members of a group of consultancies that pioneered the process of urban regeneration in the 1970s and 80s. Since that time Urbed have undertaken ground-breaking work on the reuse of industrial heritage, managed workspace, town centres, sustainable urbanism, domestic retrofit, urban design and coding. Their closure will not affect ourselves at the Urbed Trust. We are a separate not for profit company run by Urbed’s 1976 original founding director Dr Nicholas Falk. We will continue our work on smarter urbanisation and sustainable housing in both the UK and India. Who are the URBED Trust? The URBED Trust is a not for profit company with charitable aims set up to promote research into the future of urban areas, and to disseminate best practice. The trust was reconstituted after Nicholas Falk and David Rudlin won the 2014 Wolfson Economics Prize for showing how to build new Garden Cities that are visionary, viable and popular. A group of expert board members are overseeing different projects, in partnership with other public bodies.

President: Bonnie McIver - Bonnie’s professional design career includes advertising and graphic design in the NY Metro area, and interior design in western Pennsylvania. She founded and operated an upscale interior design and home furnishings consignment store before retiring to NC. Vice-President: Nancy Miller - Nancy, a new resident of SC, recently retired from her professional fundraising career in Baltimore, MD. having worked for Easter Seals, The National Defense University Foundation, and most recently, the American Cancer Society. Treasurer: Janet Payeski - Janet is enjoying the vast opportunities the Grand Strand area offers artists. Formerly a part-time resident, she moved here full-time recently and hopes that her 30-year background in Finance, including Cash Management and Financial Analysis, brings helpful skills to the Treasurer position. Secretary: Lynn Buck - Lynn is a pastel artist and former resident of CT. She became interested in pastels 20 years ago and trained under a local artist. She works mostly in pastel, but also in watercolor and acrylics. She lives in Carolina Shores with her husband, dog and cat. workshop for the imagination

Was set up by Alex Sutton-Vane to bring a wider range of quality art to children aged from 2yrs. It is based in Brighton and run through a unique art studio for children, offering a range of after school art clubs, art courses, pre school art with music and creative play, themed art parties and holiday art workshops. The philosophy behind Workshops For The Imagination is to allow creativity to thrive in an informal but structured environment. Using a wide range of materials and computer programmes children can invent, create and formulate ideas, allowing them to be free with their imagination. The workshop leaders are there to direct this process, instigate ideas and help solve problems. There is an emphasis on three dimensional design and model making using a wide variety of different materials including clay and modelling dough and exploring techniques such as paper sculpture, animation and model making.
