Policy Relevance and Impact It is part of SASPRI’s objectives to conduct research which is of direct relevance to policy. Indeed, it is hoped that our research will form part of the evidence base for evidence informed policy-making. To this end we aim to keep a record of how our research has been used by government, civil society and academia. The following list gives some examples. We would be grateful to hear of any other ways our research has been useful to researchers, policymakers, academics or civil society. The South African Index of Multiple Deprivation 2011 (SAIMD 2011) and ward level poverty data for 2011 Health Systems Trust have used the SAIMD 2011 in the District Health Barometer and South African Health Review at district and local municipality level. The SAIMD 2011 was used by Prof Francis Wilson in a seminar on Mining and Migration presented to the Marikana Commission of Inquiry on 9th April 2014 Click here for a copy of the presentation. The Human Sciences Research Council have used the SAIMD 2011 to examine the relationship between deprivation and homicides. Ward level poverty data were used in the estimation of small area take up estimates of Child Support Grant by EPRI for the national Department of Social Development. KZN Department of Health have used the poverty data to examine the relationship between poverty and trauma. A charity which provides nutritional support to school children in deprived areas have used the SAIMD 2011 as one of the data sources used to target areas for support. The SAIMD 2011 has been used by the Medical Research Council in a study looking at the relationship between multiple deprivation and low birth weight. National Treasury – contributing to work examining the basis of the equitable share. The SAIMD 2011 has been used by researchers at the University of Cape Town (UCT) to examine the relationship between mining activity and poverty/deprivation. The SAIMD 2011 has been used by the Rural Health Advocacy Project as regards their advocacy work in the former homelands. The SAIMD 2011 has been used in a case relating to tribal levies supporting the Legal Resources Centre. The SAIMD 2011 has been used by the UCT Health Economics Unit to explore the relationship between deprivation and obesity. The UCT Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health has used the SAIMD 2011 to explore the relationship between deprivation and depression. The SAIMD 2011 has been used by the University of Virginia, Department of Politics in their research on the determinants of health outcomes in South Africa. Utrecht University Department of Sociology have used the SAIMD 2011 in research to examine and explain patterns of vigilantism across South Africa. The Western Cape Department of Health have used the SAIMD 2011 for their Annual District Health Expenditure Review reports and in their Annual Perfomance Plan.

Glenbervie Kindergarden has been established for and providing care to children from birth to primary seven for almost 20 years. Each of our settings are unique and all offer the same high quality of care and education that our parents expect. The settings have all been refurbished quite recently to a bright, modern standard and all facilities are well resourced. Within our settings we offer a child centered approach, we encourage the children to be involved in their own learning and their achievements celebrated. Our staff create happy, caring and stimulating environments in which each child can develop, build confidence and can become more independant in their own right. For our younger children we have a range of baby and toddler rooms, designed to nurture and support the development of each individual child. For our older children in the Explorer rooms, we offer a breadth of learning experiences, where our skilled staff are confident in enhancing and deepening the child's learning. Our out of school Clubs offer fun, stimulating environments where children can socialise, play and relax before or after a busy day at school. Our nurseries and out of school facilities put a strong emphasis on learning outdoors and all settings have their own outdoor areas to support and extend your child's learning and exploration. Adventures outwith the gardens include visits such as, the local park, the library, garden centre or other landmarks, this helps to build the child's sense of connection with the local community. Our staff team have a wealth of experience and qualifications and are all registered with the Scottish Social Services Council and have up to date PVG checks. To ensure staff are well equipped to support the children's learning and development, staff undergo continuous professional development. A high percentage of our staff team are first aid trained, with us working towards all staff being trained in this. As well as our own staff we work closely with other professionals such as health visitor, social work, speech and language, educational psychologist and other various agencies. Within our settings we promote healthy eating, our snacks are varied and interesting and lunches can be provided by an outside catering company, who follow the current 'Setting the table' guidance. Parents also have the option to provide their own child's lunch. We are in Partnership with Falkirk Council and can provide up to 1140 funded hours for eligible children. Welcome to our Espression Arts Family, make yourself at home whilst I pop the kettle on. How are you today? Espression Arts is a creative community led by Me, Catherine, the founder, the glue behind our special, arty enterprise. I live in a small village partner to a very patient Daddy Jean who puts up with the hours of work and energy we give to projects and our clients. I am Mummy to my two beautiful children, Melodie 7, and Jerome 11, who are often with me on projects and at events, along with Daisy Dog who sometimes comes along too! I grew up with a creative and hard-working family, My dedication, work ethic, and focus for things I believe in, I get from them. My Mum who now lives with Parkinson’s in an annex in our garden spends her spare time when she isn’t bowling in the village as one of Espression Arts many creative volunteers. If I am not working I am found snuggling on the sofa watching films with a gin and tonic! Whilst studying Visual Arts at Goldsmiths University London I enjoyed spending my spare time getting to know the local community, working in pubs, and helping with play schemes. Since then, I spent 25 years developing my community facilitation and project management skills starting in youth work management working for an environmental charity in Southeast London. In 2009 we left the big city and started our Pottery Painting Community Journey in the historic town of Canterbury, opening our interactive arts café. This is where our family grew with everyone who loved pottery painting as much as we did! Sadly, the interactive arts café, closed at the end of 2020 during the Covid19 Pandemic, but we are still going strong! We continue sharing arts and wellbeing experiences with others! Happily our Espression Arts Family is just getting bigger and bigger as a result. In 2017, our family business became not for profit and became a Social Enterprise which has helped us to take profits from sales of our ceramic products, parties, and workshops, combined with successful grant applications, and deliver some of the best community projects in Kent. I am proud of our position in the local community feel respected for both business and charitable, endeavours, before the pandemic we were awarded Kent Messenger Best Creative Volunteer Project for both Canterbury and all of Kent, we were even finalists for Kent Dementia Friendly Awards.
