THE BLACKTHORPE BARN WAS BUILT ROUND 1550, PROBABLY BY JOHN DRURY WHO HAD JUST ACQUIRED THE MANOR OF ROUGHAM THROUGH THE DISSOLUTION OF THE GREAT BENEDICTINE ABBEY AT BURY ST. EDMUNDS IN 1539. It is timber framed with a vast, striking thatched roof measuring over 30 metres long. The barn’s purpose was to be used for the threshing and storage of grain and it continued as a grain store until 1985. You can read more about the barn’s history here. These days the threshing barn and the surrounding buildings are used for events including the festive craft market at Christmas and other art exhibitions during the year, as well as for weddings in the summer months. The Community Schools has been successfully supporting students for over 10 years with it’s proven method of shared tutoring. There are no more than three students working with the tutor. Each student is tutored as an individual within the 75 minutes shared session. Each student is given time and space to develop their own understanding, their own confidence and resilience. The tutors are highly experienced and successful classroom teachers and Heads of Departments. Many still work in schools. We all love our teaching and are passionate about helping students to progress and achieve at and beyond their aspirations. We have Learning Centres in Bury St Edmunds, Stowmarket and Kesgrave (Ipswich) with over 30 specialist teachers helping in excess of 200 students weekly across Suffolk. Following Lockdown we appreciate that some students need a Face to Face learning environment. We have worked hard to prepare Covid-Secure environments to keep our tutors and students safe. I believe children should learn in a child centred environment, where they are immersed in a range of rich and stimulating experiences which they can enjoy, explore and engage with; enabling them to foster a love of learning that will stay with them throughout their lives. I employ an imaginative and creative approach. My beliefs will reflect in providing enjoyable, successful sensory classes for Mums and Babies to enjoy and make memories together. I have two beautiful children and a supportive husband. St Benedict's is a comprehensive secondary school of about 740 boys and girls aged from 11 to 18 years. The school serves the Catholic communities of West Suffolk and Thetford and gives priority for admissions to children who are baptised Catholics, but has always welcomed others who wish to gain from and participate in the Christian life of the school. St. Benedict’s is situated on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds and is readily accessible by car or public transport. The school has six acres of playing fields and the accommodation is spacious and under constant improvement. There are specialist suites for all subject departments. The School Library has been transformed into a Learning Resource Centre with the addition of a suite of computers. In addition to the Learning Resource Centre, there are 5 more dedicated Computer suites, making St. Benedict’s one of the best-equipped schools for ICT in the area. Remodelling the School Hall enhances our facilities for Sport, Drama and Worship, as does the addition of a Fitness Studio to enhance sport and promote healthy lifestyles. Special Needs provision is excellent, and based in a new Learning Support area. Recent extensions and improvements have included an All-weather surface for tennis, hockey, netball and 5-a-side football, an additional science room, and the new classroom block which serves as a base for year 7 and 8. Art, Drama and Music flourish and, in spite of the schools relatively small size, success on the games field is notable.
