Harrogate and Nidderdale District Scouts is a district within the Scout County of North Yorkshire. Geographically it covers an area from Pateley Bridge in the west to Marston Moor in the east, with most groups located in the towns of Harrogate and Knaresborough. There are 14 groups, and 9 Explorer units, including a Young Leaders’ Unit. The District campsite and activity centre is located near to Thornthwaite in Nidderdale and is used by Scouts and Guides from all over the country as well as other youth groups. The District runs a variety of events throughout the year for the different sections, for example the Harrogate Monopoly, Cub Camping competition and District Beaver Day. It is also involved in community events such as providing the catering for the Stray bonfire organised by the Round Table, and of course the St George’s Day parade and Remembrance Sunday. Our staff members have a vast amount of experience in delivery of Forest Schools programmes, outdoor education and creative activities. They are qualified in Outdoor First Aid, are DBS checked, hold Food Safety certificates and are members of the Forest School Association: Honia Devlin Gemma McColl Louise Shepherd Honia Devlin Honia established Bright Woods Forest School in 2016, keen to inspire children and help them develop an understanding of the natural world. Honia has over 12 years’ experience in delivery of outdoor education and wildlife conservation projects as well as running events and wild themed birthday parties to children of all ages. She has previously worked for London Wildlife Trust and more locally for the Heart of Teesdale Landscape Partnership. She has an MSc in Biology with specialism in Environmental Biology and is a qualified Forest Schools Level 3 Practitioner. Gemma McColl Gemma, who joined the team shortly after, spent more than 14 years working in community arts and ran a successful Educational Arts business, working with children throughout KS1-3, before becoming a qualified primary school teacher. As a freelance artist, Gemma worked with schools and community groups delivering various workshops, which were inspired by the Reggio Emilia enquiry-based approach of early childhood education. The ethos of the Reggio approach and Forest Schools sit comfortably together as they are about empowering children and helping them to be resilient problem-solvers in the future. Gemma is a qualified Forest Schools Level 3 Practitioner. Louise Shepherd Louise started with us as a volunteer in 2018 before becoming an integral part of the team. She is a keen nature enthusiast with a particular interest in wild flowers, trees and lichen and has a wealth of knowledge. Prior to joining Bright Woods, Louise was a family support officer in a primary school and while there, she completed her Level 3 Forest School qualification and enjoyed organising and facilitating sessions such as pond dipping, bug hunts and fire lighting. Louise is also a qualified secondary school teacher and spent many years leading scout sessions, supporting children from 6 to 18 years old with bushcraft and camping activities. Volunteers We also have a number of volunteers who contribute to the varied aspects of running of our Forest School including wildlife conservation and practical work as well as assisting sessions and events. Our Ethos Bright Woods Forest School CIC believes in children’s rights to play, access the natural world, experience appropriate risk and a healthy range of emotions. We believe that children who are given the freedom to play in the outdoors and get dirty and wet are simply happy children. Such children are more fulfilled, less prone to depression and more connected to the world around them. In 2017, as away of helping us to fulfil our values and ethos and provide sessions to as wide an audience as possible, Bright Woods Forest School became a not for profit Community Interest Company.

Hi, I am Anna. I set up WanderWomen Scotland Ltd in November 2018, in order to encourage women into the Outdoors, and to enable them to have their space the male-dominated Adventure world. Nature has been my happy place ever since growing up in East Germany, a locked-down country. Getting away from propaganda, Stasi spies and political control, getting outdoors meant freedom and truth, even if that meant holidaying in really basic huts, without electricity or flowing water, skinny dipping in all kinds of bodies of water and cooking over fire. After spending my 20s in London, turning my back on nature a little, yet still cycling everywhere, having my own children made me appreciate the outdoors again, I re-familiarised myself with the feeling of content that the seasons brought, or the reassurance of the cycles of growth in the garden, or the cycles of the moon. Disagreeing with the early school starting age in the UK, I flexi-schooled my 2 boys throughout their Primary School years, working with local rangers, counting bumble bees and orchids and doing other conservation tasks, built mandala sculptures, bug hotels, community gardens and a willow play village at a local park and set up an outdoor learning group for pre-school children. Once it was not cool enough for them anymore, spending their Mondays climbing trees and making fires with Mama, I decided I wanted to keep sharing the benefits of nature, as well as my survival skills – and with the help of a vision board, and support from family and friends, WanderWomen was born: Offering Outdoor events in a mix of mindfulness and adventure. Wild Swimming is my Meditation, Solo Camping is Selfcare, Yoga is being playful, Silence is where my Creativity gets birthed, and Walking is thinking & problem-solving. Cycling is getting me from A to B, and my competitive side manifests itself in going slower. I love the smell of fire and the sound of rain on canvas. Plant connection is strong, and I forage, appreciate and lay mandalas to practice mindfulness.

Silverburn is the former estate of The Russell family who were owners of the Tullis Russell paper making business. The land was originally part of the Barony of Durie and was leased to Mr David Russell by Charles Maitland Christie of Durie in 1854. A dower house known as Corriemar was also built and a flax mill was established on the site. David Russell died in 1906. His son, (also named David) and who later became Sir David Russell was born at Silverburn in 1872 and in 1912 married and went to live in Aithernie House. He returned to Silverburn in 1929. Sir David had a great interest in trees and many were planted including some rare and unusual species which continue to thrive today. In 1973, Sir David Russell’s son, Dr/Major Russell (Head of Tullis Russell Papermakers) gifted the houses and grounds to Leven Town Council, but also stipulated through the National Trust for Scotland that the “subjects should remain forever as a quiet area used for the benefit of the public in general and the people of Leven in particular for nature trails, quiet parkland and organised camping”. In the mid to late 1980s, the former Kirkcaldy District Council undertook a Job Creation Programme to reinstate Silverburn House for use as a Residential Centre for groups to use such as scouts and guides; school parties, caravan rallies etc. A stand alone wing to the rear of the House was used by crafters to make and show their wares throughout the Summer and Christmas/New Year periods. Silverburn Park Between 1990 and 1999, an average of 20,000 + people per year visited Silverburn. Its main attraction was the former “Mini-Farm” which had on show a wide range of domestic and exotic animals, birds, reptiles and insects. However, following a Council policy decision in 2002, to cease operating Animal Centres across Fife there have been very few visitors to Silverburn, other than local people. Financial constraints have also led to year-on-year reductions in revenue expenditure with no meaningful capital investment in the Park. Over the years, various ideas have been proposed for Silverburn including the setting up of a Scottish Music/Arts and Craft Centre and redevelopment as a crematorium. None of these have come to fruition.

Selson Farm sits in a gentle valley on the eastern edge of the North Downs in Kent. You’ll be surrounded by beautiful apple, pear and cherry orchards, with plenty of asparagus fields nearby too. The camping field itself is a good four-acres, completely flat and lined with trees for shade and shelter. David is an ex-army Major and runs the farm. It was bought by his grandfather in the 1920s, who became a renowned English fruit grower. With a spread of crops, there’s always something being harvested in most of the summer. In May, you can pick fresh asparagus and there’s early apples in August. All of the produce is sold locally, either at the farm gate or in farm shops and greengrocers. Our apples and pears also end up in the big supermarkets. Lathe Barn is our newer campsite offering. It boasts over 10 acres of sprawling grounds, situated only two miles inland from the stunning Dymchurch seafront. It also benefits from incredible views of the surrounding hills and you can even see Lympne Castle too. It’s an absolutely wonderful spot to stay with the family, with plenty of activities happening on the grounds and loads of things to do nearby.

Atlantic Reach is a holiday resort and leisure club, close by to Newquay in an open countryside setting. Set in around 45 acres, the resort has 230 holiday homes, 115 serviced camping pitches and facilities for guests including indoor and outdoor swimming pools, large fully equipped gym, three fitness studio’s with a huge fitness class schedule to choose from each week, cafe / bar, the Manor Arms pub and restaurant, outdoor play areas, arcade, adventure trail, tennis courts and lots of green space. We work hard to ensure all of our visits have a great time, and welcome all feedback. As well as guests staying with us, the Resort is open to those living locally with a membership or locals card. Where possible we like to buy local, conserve energy, protect the environment and reduce our use of plastics. Please help us with this – there are recycling points dotted around the site and new ideas are welcomed. The safety and security of everyone on site is important to us. We run a comprehensive health and safety management system, and whilst we try to ensure this doesn’t get in your way or stop you having fun, we ask that everyone follows the guidance of any rules or signage that may be dotted around the site.

It was on 12th October 1885 that the twelve Glasgow Companies held a meeting to form the Glasgow Battalion. More than 130 years later Glasgow Battalion comprises 57 Companies operating in Glasgow and East Kilbride, the role of a Battalion is to promote the interests of the Brigade in its area by organising activities for members; by the provision of support, training and opportunities for fellowship for Leaders; and by seeking opportunities for development of the Brigade to fulfil its Object better.

Situated in one of the islands most beautiful but quietest places, we are surrounded by an area of outstanding natural beauty and nature reserves. If you like peace and quiet, nature, wildlife walks and car-free bike rides - but like a good pub and a few shops within easy walking distance, then we are the place for you.. Oakdene Orchard is a special campsite in a large site of old fields and woodland. We are open just a few weeks a year. It's enclosed and sheltered from bad wind by its large trees and hedgerows, giving a sense of privacy and security, but still feeling open to all the space and country darkness that makes real camping so different from anything else. We offer just a handful of big, flat, individual plots. All are very well spaced out (most not even viewable from each other) and are available in either: Our amazing spacious Bell-tents, or bring your own tents if you are walkers or on bicycles Each bell-tent pitch is part screened with its own hedging and trees, and comes with a large family size bench with a fire pit and wood included. Oakdean Orchard offers a safe but adventurous place to stay for smaller groups and all those interested in peaceful enjoyment of the natural environment. Although we are located in a beautiful place we are not really a 'glamping' site. But we supply water, toilets and hot showers for all visitors free.
