After leaving the UK in 2010 and embarking on a backpacking trip to Indonesia alone spending 12 days in the forest with three local guides. Wanda, Bendy and Ping yes that was their names travelling through the forest and camping at a new spot each night. Which added some life-changing experiences for me a nieve 17-18-year-old alone in a foreign country with me not knowing any part of the local language. When I got back to the UK I decided on this as a hopeful career path which I am still working toward now. I decided I wanted to work in the travel industry, where my passion in life truly lies. So I came back to the UK after that trip and immediately planned for other journeys. Still living with family I decided to explore a bit of Latin America which I really enjoyed the culture the idea of working out here was overwhelming. So in 2011, I went to Costa Rica. But where the trips truly took an expedition type feel was when planning from start to finish around 8 months prior to going away. I planned and prepared for a journey to the Darien gap Panama-Colombia border region. Which went as best as could in this region. I then began planning my return to head to Guyana where we canoed a river we, meaning myself 2 local guides travelled for 11.5 days and travelled 288km to be exact. I knew that my dream job would now be to work as an expedition leader where I could live out my passion for leading in remote and exciting places. I now had an abundance of remote travel experience and the required knowledge and soon the qualifications that it takes to do this. But I was still without the valuable experience required to teach and lead people in remote places. I have now done my ML training so that I would soon have the qualification to make this a career choice of mine.

Cultivating research software to support world-class research Software is fundamental to research: 7 out of 10 researchers report their work would be impossible without it. From short, thrown-together temporary scripts to solving a specific problem, through an abundance of complex spreadsheets analysing collected data, to the hundreds of software engineers and millions of lines of code behind international efforts such as the Large Hadron Collider and the Square Kilometre Array, there are few areas of research where software does not have a fundamental role. Since 2010, the Software Sustainability Institute has facilitated the advancement of software in research by cultivating better, more sustainable, research software to enable world-class research (“Better software, better research”). In 2018, we were awarded funding from all seven research councils. Our mission is to become the world-leading hub for research software practice. The Institute is based at the Universities of Edinburgh, Manchester, Oxford and Southampton, and draws on a team of experts with a breadth of experience in software development, training, project and programme management, research facilitation, publicity and community engagement. The importance of sustainability Sustainability means that the software you use today will be available - and continue to be improved and supported - in the future. Expert knowledge Securing a future for research software requires more than just quality code, which is why, over the years, we have striven to help researchers build and use better software through better practices, and advocate for culture change within their communities and institutions. I live in Birmingham with my Partner James and my 3 wonderful Children - Flynn, Coel and Phoebe. I have enjoyed signing with my older sister, through my work - working with children/adults with additional needs and A/autism and with my own children! Using baby signing with my children (starting with Flynn in 2001!), it helped them to tell me what they wanted/needed or how they were feeling. Baby signing boosted their confidence, helped them to be included and lessened their frustration! It really is amazing when your baby can start a 'conversation' with you about something that they are interested in! My children could tell me so, so much with their signs, before they were physically able to tell me with their voices - just wonderful! They were all super keen to say the words that they were signing too, which eventually happened in abundance! Flynn and Coel are both now very articulate, happy boys, who are proud to still be able to sign. My Daughter Phoebe is now 5 and she adored her Sing and Sign journey! She really is an avid dinosaur fan and I believe that she could actually talk the hind legs off a donkey (or T-Rex), telling you all the dinosaur names! She has started school now and as with her brothers, her teachers are amazed at her astounding vocabulary and she proudly shares her signing! It really is a magical and wonderful skill to learn together and one that can be taken on through life too! My work prior to this has always been promoting rights and inclusion - why shouldn't little ones have this too?! I study British Sign Language (BSL) also and I am currently at Level 3 and I am passionate about Deaf Awareness too. Being so passionate about communication and baby signing lead to me wanting to tell the World! - well Birmingham at least and so I bought my own little bit of Sing and Sign! I am very excited and happy to be able share Sing and Sign with you!
