The post – Second World War years meant a frugal existence and rationing for a nation recovering from total devastation, in the Cambridgeshire Fens one man saw an opportunity to market farmers’ fresh produce to this hungry and receptive population. Russell Burgess Ltd. was formed in 1946 to market potatoes and fresh produce grown on farms in the Fens. 1999 A joint-venture growing operation was formed between Las Lomas and the Produce World Group in 1999. The concept gave Produce World an additional supply line to import parsnips, leeks, bunched carrots, potatoes and onions, and create an all year round supply source for the benefit of our rapidly expanding customer base. 2000 Russell Burgess (Potatoes) merges with Sutton Bridge Ltd to form Solanum Ltd. 2003 Companies merge to create Produce World Ltd. 2009 Produce World disposes of its interests in British & Brazilian Produce Ltd to AG Thames Holdings Ltd. 2014 TIO and Fenmarc Roots division based at Swinderby acquired; strengthening position in key markets. 2014 UK Grower Award for Tatsoi. 2014 Natures Premium as organic brand. 2015 Taylorgrown Ltd acquired. 2015 Major investment in Sutton Bridge and Isleham sites. 2017 Restructured back to four independent business units, Lynchwood office closed. 2018 Trading as Burgess Farms, we restructured into 2 divisions, Burgess Farm Produce & RBOrganic.

The Enterprise Support Alliance is an Enterprise Agency, a member of the National Enterprise Network and has Academy Status from the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs (IOEE). Our roots are in the East of England and we are keen to continue to build on the extensive and excellent relationships we have in place. Our ambition is not however restricted to the East of England as we are keen to develop new and exciting relationships with professionals across the UK. The Alliance is led by Pat Smith who has a long term track record of leadership across the East of England. Pat is supported by 3 fellow shareholding Directors and our team of specialist colleagues. Pat is best known for his work as Chief Executive of Business Link East. Pat has led organisations providing services in every Local Authority area, and to over 100,000 people a year across the East of England, on issues such as business support, international trade, inward investment and skills development. Our activities include: Delivery of business support activities to fulfil our ambition Building a collaborative network of like-minded people and organisations who want to get involved in delivery of projects. Bidding, often in partnership with other organisations, for publicly funded tenders to deliver business and enterprise related services. Organising conferences, seminars, and workshops on a range of topics related to stimulating enterprise in all its forms, and to identify and find ways to overcome the issues preventing the growth of established businesses. The Enterprise Support Alliance is a member of the Deyton Bell Group which also includes Deyton Bell Limited, Deyton Bell Global, and the Regional Economic Alliance.

North East Grains is a large farmer owned cooperative based at Longhirst, Morpeth. North East Grains was founded in 1987 with a 10,000 tonnes capacity drying and storage facility and just 4 members. The farmer owned members cooperative was set up with the aim to benefit its membership with a collaborative approach through scale and providing a range of services. Since then, North East Grains has grown to one of the largest farming cooperatives in the North East with our original aim at the forefront of this growth. Today, North East Grains offers over 60,000 tonnes of grain drying and storage to its 80 plus members as well as a number of other beneficial services including:  Feed Milling and Production  Grain Marketing and value-added grain sales  Input purchasing and buying group  Fuels and energy supplier  Agri Waste collection site  Agronomy service and Farm Business Consultancy North East Grains has, and continues to developed the grain and feed facility and its services it offers. Most recently, we have invested over £2m in a state-of-the-art grain drying and cleaning plant increasing the site’s processing capacity to over 150 tonnes per hour alongside extending our grain storage capacity by 20,000 tonnes. We are investing heavily in our feed production facility to further improve the quality, consistency and traceability of our ever growing feed business. This will benefit our members by adding value to the marketable grain but also to local producers who rely on the feed we produce. In 2022 North East Grains received granting funding from the Rural Payment Agency – funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), which is part of the European Structural Investment Funds (ESIF). This Funding formed part of our newly developed Feed Production System.
