About the chief instructor Gursharan Sahota was born in Kenya, East Africa but moved to the UK at the age of 12. He took up Karate at the age of 14 in the local Bedford club and was awarded black belt 1st dan (shodan) four years later. Now an 8th Dan, Gursharan has competed in a multitude of kata and kumite events, many at national and international level. But the most significant event in his career was the visit he made in 1984 to Japan. There, he fulfilled a great ambition by training in a Japanese dojo under the instruction of Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa. This experience proved to be a turning point for Gursharan. On his return to England, he realised the trip had been the inspiration he needed to dedicate his future to training and teaching karate as a way of life. Gursharan’s first club was opened in Luton/Dunstable in 1981 and this is now the association’s hombu (HQ). Having been a teacher of the art for many years, he formed his own association in 1993 – TISKA (The Traditional International Shotokan Karate Association) which is now one of the biggest associations in the UK. Gursharan’s love of karate has never diminished. He still teaches over 35 classes a week in the UK and regularly takes master classes internationally. All in all, he has brought hundreds of students of all ages up to black belt standard and beyond. He is also involved in charity work, helping to subsidise trips for surgeons to third world countries to operate on underprivileged children. He has, for many years, funded many projects in India, and is at present helping to fund the building of a new school.

Paradice Ice Rink Avondale

PARADICE A BRIEF HISTORY One day in the early 1970’s Ross Blong, a farmer with imagination as it turned out, came home from a particularly unpleasant milking and told his wife Nell he had enough and wanted to find something different to do! After searching for a “people business” they decided on an ice skating rink in Glen Innes and purchased it in 1974. After a steep learning curve they established Paradice on the map as a great family entertainment facility in Auckland. By 1980 they had dreams of building New Zealand’s first international size indoor arena and had it up and running by May 1981 at our current Avondale location at Lansford Cresent. It has been popular ever since with families and as a “hang out” for teens and young adults. There have been several transformations since its opening with the most recent being completed in 2011 to include a state of the art ice floor, dasher boards and refrigeration system. By the late 1990’s the second family generation having being heavily involved in ice sports at an international level dreamed of a second, Olympic sized indoor ice rink, again a first for New Zealand, and it was built in 1999 at its current location Botany Downs. The rink is still going strong today. In 2012 Paradice owned and operated Auckland’s first temporary outdoor ice rink at Aotea Square which has turned into an annual winter wonderland type event with the addition of NZ’s first event ice slide in 2014. Our temporary ice rinks have expanded to Rotorua, Wellington, and Taupo. Through the years Paradice has operated as a family, customer focused friendly business with staff sharing their passion for people and ice with innovation!

Arriving in England in 1999, our Mestre-Luis Negão founded the group with the name Capoeira Pedra do Sal, in honour of his home borough in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. At first, Luis Negão was teaching classes with no real vision for the group, but seeing the potential of his students, decided to return to Brazil for a period to take courses with reputable masters of the art, in order to feel qualified to pass on his knowledge and skills. He spent some time training with Mestre Salário Mínimo of Grupo Abolição, who gave his Professor graduation, and so he took the name Abolição back to England to establish Abolição Oxford Capoeira. During his work with capoeira, the focus of the group became more ingrained in the teachings and methodology of Capoeira Regional, over the years he has continued studying and searching for information to further his knowledge and understanding of Capoeira, passing this knowledge on to his students, and giving them opportunities to learn from Mestres and teachers via trips to Brazil, and exchanges and workshops in England. Gaining recognition for his work, the founder of Abolição Oxford Capoeira has become known as Mestre Luis Negão, and is a well respected master of Capoeira in England, Brazil and beyond. Students of the group have gone on to be graduated as Formados and Professores, continuing this work in London and Oxford, for many years Mestre Luis Negão ran a project in Abaete, Itapuã in Salvador to help children on the streets where his journey in capoeira began, The Abolição Trust was set up to fund this project, and another project was set up in South Africa by two students from England (Professores Xaruto and Mosqueteiro), now some students from this project are teaching classes of their own across South Africa. Mestre Luis Negão continues teaching classes in Taunton, England.

Sarah Luke Glass Artist

I live is a lovely Leicestershire village with my three grandchildren and two cats. Life is constantly busy, but every available moment I have you will find me at my desk designing and making, or in my workshop adding the finishing touches to a piece. I love working with glass. It is a medium with endless possibilities, it is unpredictable, sometimes difficult to control but when it works it is just beautiful. I have been working with glass for over five years. If you look at my work it is clear to see that I am inspired by nature, the sea, flora, trees, landscapes, and I bring elements of all of these into my work. I am lucky that I have been able to spend time learning from some inspirational UK glass artists, Claire Hall in Somerset, Laura Hart in Suffolk and Roberta Ayles in Devon. All have passed on different and varied skills that have helped me progress as a glass artist. My signature pieces are my fairy pictures. Each one is individual, each one has a link to nature. Most of these are now commissions and I am always overjoyed when I get asked to make a fairy picture. This year I am beginning to discover other materials to work with including silver clay and enamel on copper. The future may involve me exploring ways of combining the different materials to see what can be produced and achieved. Due to a variety of reasons I have come to art later in life, but in retrospect this is the right time for me, what I do makes me happy, I know I am very lucky to be able to say that. Please have a look at my shop and also my events page to see what I am up to next. And thank you for visiting and reading.

We know that sometimes people just need to learn skills to express their creativity and need support and feedback to help them build their confidence, in a non-pressure environment.

Cheltenham Youth Theatre

Inspiring the next generation of theatre-makers. At CYT, we push tradition to one side and are renowned for making fresh, exciting, memorable physical theatre that truly celebrates the vibrant energy of our young people. We devise our own work and aim to break the mould in young people's theatre. We strongly believe that theatre is as much about the finished show, as the process it takes to get there. It's the friends you make, the challenges you overcome together, the voice you find, the creativity, passion and commitment. It's the memories that will stay with you forever and a way of working that will positively shape your future, in whichever direction you are headed. We are not your average stage school. Our theatre aims to thought-provoke and joy-evoke, exploring issues and themes relevant to young people today. Social and emotional development is at the very heart of our work, always striving to uplift, empower and inspire our performers and audiences. We have proudly taken part in National Theatre Connections eight times, performing vibrant new work at Parabola Arts Centre, Bristol Old Vic, Theatre Royal Bath and Royal & Derngate. To date, we have also performed at The Bacon Theatre's Open-Air Theatre Festival, The Wilson Art Gallery, Cheltenham Science Festival, Bristol Shakespeare Festival, the Brewery Quarter, JOLT International Theatre Festival and the Montpelier Fiesta! Not to mention enduring a Zombie Apocalypse and following the yellow brick road to Emerald City, and that's just for starters... CYT is a safe platform to express & discover who you want to be. I have been teaching yoga and body based therapies for over 10 years. I am insured and registered as a Senior Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance Professionals. I mainly works with groups in a class or workshop setting as well as with privates clients from my home studio. My one to one yoga sessions can help you to develop a personal practice that works more deeply than if you were to join a class. I structure it specifically for your personal needs. I get to closely recognise, talk to and understand the anatomy, movement and postural habits and patterns of each individual.  I work relationally, holistically and intuitively to begin the process of unravelling and resetting old pattern with-in the body, especially focusing on the ones that aren’t serving my client well . I always love witnessing the integration process that begins with movement and breath awareness.   My work reaches out to a broad range of people including people suffering with physical ailments such as; physical tension, pain, general wear and tear, injury and mis-alignment, as well as working alongside clients suffering with mental health issues such as anxiety, stress, insomnia, depression, trauma…  My therapeutic approach integrates many tools and resources which help aid the healing process for both the mind (Cognitive) & body (Somatic) in a profound way. Many people carry traumatic experiences in their body which can have a detrimental effect on their quality of life and wellbeing.  Trauma has many characteristics; anxiety, stress, anger, physical pain, insomnia, panic attacks, depression and other physical and mental depilating illnesses.  I teach the art of embodiment and Interoceptive awareness to help create a new map, a new experience for her clients – releasing old patterns that may be getting in the way of them having a “better life”. Think of it as a ‘new life map’!
