<p>Your expert course leader is an international legal expert in petroleum law who is based in Scotland. He received the degrees of Juris Doctor from the University of Wyoming and LLM-Energy Law from the University of Utah. He has been listed in the Guide to the World's Leading Energy and Natural Resources Lawyers. In over 30 years of practice, he has been chief legal officer in petroleum companies, consultant to development banks and aid programmes, and law professor.</p>
<p>His private sector experience included positions as General Counsel of the Petroleum Corporation of New Zealand and Chief Legal Officer for Sinclair Oil Corporation in the United States. He has been a consultant to the Asian Development Bank, The World Bank and the European Investment Bank on petroleum sector policy, gas sales agreements, and production sharing contracts. This has included assignments in Cambodia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Laos, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, and Vietnam.</p>
<p>Your expert course leader has been an adviser and trainer on negotiations for various petroleum companies including BP, BG Group, Gazprom, KazMunayGas, Perushaan Gas Negera, Pertamina, PETRONAS, Philippine National Oil Corporation, Total, Shell and Statoil. He was appointed by Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as the lead negotiator on behalf of four West African governments for the West African Gas Pipeline Project.</p>
<p>His academic credentials include an appointment as Distinguished Visiting Professor for Oil &amp; Gas Law at the University of Wyoming. He is currently Honourary Professor for International Petroleum Law at the University of Dundee Centre for Energy, Petroleum &amp; Mineral Law and Policy. At CEPMLP, he has been the Course Director and principal instructor for seminars on Petroleum Industry Negotiations, Petroleum Service Contracts, Gas Industry Contracts, and Downstream Petroleum Law. He is the course author of International Comparative Petroleum Law. He spent many years as a consultant and commercial manager in the North West Shelf Gas project in Western Australia. Since 2006, he has been an Adjunct Fellow at the Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre where he teaches courses in valuation, financial statement modelling, and resources industry investment analysis.</p>

<p><strong>Trainer 1:</strong></p>
<p>Your first expert course leader is a specialist in reservoir engineering, field development planning and petroleum management. Having worked for over 40 years in the petroleum industry, his most recent full-time position was Chief Operating Officer and Project Director for AED Oil and East Puffin (2007-09) for the Puffin offshore development, Timor Sea.</p>
<p>Prior to his academic career (2001-2006), commencing in 2001 as head of the new School of Petroleum Engineering and Management at the UA, he worked for 16 years for BHP Petroleum (now BHP Billiton), most recently as Chief Reservoir Engineer for their worldwide operations. Other positions with BHP Billiton involved mainly technical and project management, and general management positions, including member of the BHP Board. He was project manager (feasibility) for two FPSO projects, the Skua and Griffin area fields, offshore Australia. He was also the Technical Manager for the Dai Hung project, offshore Vietnam where first oil was achieved in just 18 months from sanction. Before that time, he worked for Shell International (8 years) in the Netherlands, including two years as Senior Lecturer Reservoir Engineering at Shell's training centre and in Australia, seconded to Woodside Energy, with a key role in Australia's largest capital project (at the time), the Northwest Shelf Gas development. He started his career in Calgary, Canada, first with Hudson's Bay Oil and Gas and subsequently with the US consulting company, Scientific Software Corporation.</p>
<p>He holds a BSc degree in Physics from the University of British Columbia and a MS degree in Nuclear Engineering from Stanford University. He has been an active member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, including Director for the Asia-Pacific region (1996-98) and as a member of the Board. He was an SPE Distinguished Lecturer during 2001-02 and a PESA Distinguished Lecturer during 2002. He has lectured at many institutions and was a visiting professor at Stanford University in 2000. He has published over 50 papers on both technical and managerial topics.</p>
<p>His professional interests are in optimal planning and project management of offshore petroleum discoveries. His primary research interests are in the area of special core analysis and the development of predictive models for reservoir characterisation.</p>
<p><strong>Trainer 2:</strong></p>
<p>Your other course leader is currently an independent consultant and trainer after 37 years in the upstream petroleum industry. His previous roles included Chief Geologist for GALP Energy, Consultant/ Head of Exploration for Qatar Petroleum, Technical/ Asset Manager for SASOL, and various technical and technical management roles in BHP Billiton Petroleum and Chevron.</p>
<p>He managed/ executed many projects in diverse locations: West Grimes gas field development - California; Port Arguello heavy oil development - offshore California; exploration &amp; development projects - Nigeria; Tengiz field early development, Korolev appraisal - Kazakhstan; Nkossa field development, Moho/ Bilondo exploration - offshore Congo; PNG divestment, Bayu-Undan LNG development - Australia; Ohanet acquisition, appraisal &amp; development - Algeria; Pande development, Pande/ Temane gas plant expansion &amp; near field exploration - Mozambique; Pre-Khuff (HP/HT) exploration, multiple blocks &amp; operators - Qatar; Coral/ Mamba appraisal - Mozambique; Blocks 14/32 exploration &amp; development - Angola; exploration &amp; appraisal - onshore &amp; offshore Brazil.</p>

<p>This 5 full-day training course looks at the setup of economic analysis cases, including the estimation of recoverable reserves, production profiles, commodity prices, and project costs - CAPEX, OPEX, taxes, royalties, transportation, depreciation, before-tax (BTAX) cash-flow, after-tax (ATAX) cash-flow and international fiscal regimes (production sharing agreement and concessionary system). The course begins from the basic required parameters of inflation, interest and time value of money. These concepts are then transformed into profitability indicators. Last but not the least, the profitability indicators are then used to make investment decisions.</p>
<p>The emphasis of this course is to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and their practical limitations. The participants will be able to appreciate the amount of information that they never thought of. Another emphasis of this course is also on the use of Excel's financial functions. This understanding is very critical when it comes to building economic cash-flow models. Over the years, we have seen that participants really struggle with using the Excel functions correctly and this leads to mistakes that can be easily avoided.</p>
<p>In each session, multiple choice problems are provided to participants to reinforce their understanding of the concepts covered in the course. Many quick or tips not widely known, are also shared with the participants. The concepts covered in this course are not restricted to downstream, upstream or petrochemical projects. <p>This 5 half-day Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) course covers carbon capture and geological storage of carbon dioxide. Burning fossil fuels for energy is a major source of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. Most anthropogenic (man-made) carbon dioxide is emitted by coal-fired or gas-fired power plants, and significant quantities of carbon dioxide are emitted through the production and separation of carbon dioxide-rich natural gas and industries such as cement, iron and steel. Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage, or CCUS, involves the long-term storage of captured carbon dioxide emissions in subsurface geologic formations.</p>

<p>Your first expert course leader spent 18 years in the Petroleum Industry before joining academia, in both technical and managerial roles with Shell, Arco and Vico. He has received numerous awards, including Distinguished Service, Honorary member and Special Commendation awards from the American Association of Petroleum Geologist (AAPG) and was AAPG's International Vice-President and recently chairman of AAPG's House of Delegates (the Associations Parliamentary body).</p>
<p>He is an SPE Distinguished Lecturer (DL) and has served as DL for several other professional organisations, including, AAPG, IPA and PESA. He is currently a Professor of Petroleum Geology and Engineering at the Australian School of Petroleum, University of Adelaide. He holds the South Australia State Chair in Carbon Capture &amp; Storage (CCS) and is also presently Distinguished Scientist of the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC), having served earlier as the Storage Program Manager and Chief Scientist.</p>
<p>Your second expert course leader has a wide and deep knowledge of major capture technologies: solvent, membrane and adsorption based technologies and has developed pathways for retrofitting CO<sub>2</sub> capture and storage (CCS) to fossil fuel-based power plants. He has been actively engaged in Post-combustion capture project management and demonstration projects in Victoria's Latrobe Valley on CO<sub>2</sub> capture and hydrogen production, and on CO<sub>2</sub> capture using membrane contactor technology.</p>
<p>He has led various feasibility studies for the Asian Development Bank on CO<sub>2</sub> Capture at Indian Oil Corporation's refineries, for JPOWER on hydrogen production from Victorian brown coal and for Kawasaki on incorporation of CCS in hydrogen production from fossil fuel. He has authored multiple peer reviewed journal articles, co-authored various confidential reports on CO<sub>2</sub> capture, utilization and hydrogen production and utility, and has presented his work at various conferences, symposiums and seminars. <p>The prospect maturation process, from a lead to a drillable prospect, is at the heart of the exploration business. This 5 full day course will cover all aspects of the prospect maturation process: play understanding in the context of regional geological understanding, detailed prospect evaluation; realistic risk &amp; volume assessment consistent with the play understanding and prospect details, and an introduction to exploration economics.</p>
<p>Throughout the course, there is a strong focus on pragmatic (geo)logical approach for assessing those aspects that are input parameters for a meaningful assessment of prospect risks and volumes, with emphasis on a balanced integration of contributions from different sub-surface disciplines. Many examples from basins from around the world are used to illustrate how traps, reservoirs, seals and charge occur in different basin settings.</p>
<p><strong>Specifics topics that will be discussed include the following:</strong></p>

<p>Your expert course leader has a PhD in Geology from the University of Utrecht. He worked for 31 years (1979 -2010) with Shell as an exploration geologist in a variety of functions across the globe. As Principle Technical Expert, he was responsible for ensuring that Risk &amp; Volume assessments were carried out consistently and correctly in all of Shell's exploration units.</p>
<p>In this capacity, he led and participated in countless prospect review sessions and developed and conducted a successful in-house course on Risks &amp; Volume assessment. As manager of the Exploration Excellence Team, he performed in depth analysis of basins and plays and provided advice on exploration opportunities to senior management. Together with his team, he visited most of Shell's exploration offices, working hands-on with Shell's local exploration teams to generate new play and prospect ideas and to suggest evaluation techniques and technologies to apply.</p>
<p>In 2010, he was appointed as extraordinary professor Regional and Petroleum Geology at the VU university of Amsterdam and in 2012 also at the University of Utrecht. He was visiting professor at the University of Malaya (Malaysia).</p>
<p>Through his own consultancy, as of 2010, he provides advice on exploration activities to several companies and is regularly invited to carry out technical reviews. Activities cover all continents and include Portfolio Reviews, Prospect assessment, Play-based Exploration, and Geothermal activities.</p>

It also provides guidelines on how to characterise subsurface fluids, including oil condensate and gas; refine petroleum systems, and predict fluids quality.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">The lectures and exercises are designed to improve the participants&rsquo; understanding on how to characterise source rocks and fluids, using bulk, molecular and isotopic tools that facilitate their understanding.
