The Vale Academy is situated in the small market town of Brigg in North Lincolnshire. We are a successful and high-achieving school. We have an excellent reputation and an established trend of high student outcomes which are consistently above those achieved nationally. In January 2017, we moved into our new building which provides state of the art facilities and an outstanding learning environment for our students and staff. These new facilities will enhance our excellent teaching and learning still further and will contribute to our drive for on-going success. The academy is extremely popular and, although we take most of our students from Brigg and the surrounding towns and villages, a large number of families from outside the catchment area also select The Vale as their secondary school of choice. Indeed, many students are prepared to travel some distance to access the high quality education we offer. The change to academy status in 2011 has brought with it many advantages, not least of which is the opportunity to be part of the Delta Academies Trust. After a career of teaching music in Scottish schools, I took up pottery at night classes and became hooked enough to complete a B.A . Hons in Ceramics at the iconic Glasgow School of Art. It was here that I made many connections with wonderful potters the world over, and received a brilliant education in this magical material. I aim to show my delight in ceramic form , texture and colour with great attention to detail and concern for the practical use of functional pieces. I also love to experiment with the expressive and imaginative possibilities of glaze in purely abstract work. From 2007 -2019 my husband and I lived in Stromness, in the Northern Isles of Orkney. Here we were drawn by an amazing landscape, constant reminders of its Neolithic past, and by its unique cultural and natural heritage. Grounded in agriculture and fishery, submitting to the limitations of island life and the often very challenging weather, there is a discipline in living here which corresponds to working with clay- one cannot control everything but must work with what is given. In 2019 we moved south to the Scottish Borders to be closer to family. From being surrounded by sea, we are now in the most landlocked area of Scotland and surrounded by trees! I am a practising and exhibiting textile artist who makes work focussing on memory, identity, loss and absence, using a variety of mixed media techniques alongside adapting traditional patchwork and embroidery processes for contemporary work. I have also been teaching textiles for many years, and enjoy developing the design aspect of projects with students, as well as teaching the more practical stitching and colouring skills. I have delivered City & Guilds to Diploma (the old Part 2) level in both Embroidery and Patchwork & Quilting. 2015 saw me complete my Masters with Distinction as well as having a gallery at Festival of Quilts. Then in 2016 I was part of the very successful unFOLD exhibition at the Knitting & Stitching Shows at Alexandra Palace and Harrogate International Centre. We repeated that experience with The Button Box exhibition at Festival of Quilts 2018. In 2019 I successfully entered work into the Vlieseline Fine Arts Textile Award at FOQ and then worked with unFOLD members to produce a group piece which was accepted into the Janome Fine Art Textiles Award in 2021. The Covid pandemic and lockdown saw me presenting one of the Community Stitch challenges for TextileArtist.org online, to 18,000 members of the community. This was a very exciting opportunity which coincided with the development of my new online courses. With a few external teaching commitments left for 2022, I have decided to concentrate on courses in Eastbourne for 2023 to enable me to get more stitching done. Along with fellow directors John Newton, Niall O'Hagan, Marielle Newton & Pat Burgess we run Tiger Community Enterprise CIC. The community enterprise was set up to support enterprises and assist individuals and organisations to grow. Whilst we started with a focus on supporting local businesses and community organisations we have evolved to encompass the delivery of projects that support our core aims - to help people help themselves. We work in conjunction with partners to offer the widest range of options to the community to enhance their own skills and opportunities. Whether that be to build work skills to move down the career path, showcase talents and/or business, offer empowerment opportunities in the community to build confidence, communication, and contacts to avoid social isolation or to do our bit for the planet through our recycling project. Small Dole

I wanted to create and express who I was through painting, design, photography and dancing. I wanted to work with colours and shapes. Instead, I was encouraged to pursue a more conventional path and went on studying accounting. It took me a long time to discover, or rather re-discover, my passion. I didn’t choose this purposeful path until I was in my early thirties. I spent the last ten years of my life working in the corporate world before following my true calling. I did enjoy my job in Finance but I wasn’t 100% fulfilled. I clearly wasn’t making use of my strengths and talents. This was frustrating and affected my self-esteem.
