As a Speech and Language Therapist passionate about supporting children’s communication skills, I’ve created this as a space to share information, resources and ideas. I have extensive experience of working with children from 2-16 years with a range of speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). I studied to become a Speech and Language Therapist at Newcastle University and developed my enthusiasm for supporting children’s communication throughout the course. Since being qualified (2011) I have worked in the NHS in the North East and in Yorkshire, supporting children in the community, early years and school settings. I have also worked directly for schools supporting the individual needs of the children as well as leading on staff training and development in specific areas of Speech and Language. I believe that communication is a vital skill in order to participate in a range of activities of daily living. Everyone deserves the support required to enable them to communicate effectively. I have worked with children with a range of SLCN and have particular interests in supporting children’s early language, speech sound development and selective mutism. The information presented on this website contains ideas and resources to develop speech and language skills in children and is designed to support, not replace, consultation with a Speech and Language Therapist. Manchester Environmental Education Network, or "MEEN" as it is more commonly known, is dedicated to supporting teachers, organisations and individuals working to promote environmental education and Education for Sustainability. To achieve this, we use a variety of methods: we run projects with schools, organise networking events, provide a termly newsletter and pool various free curriculum resources on this website. MEEN began life in 1994 as an informal organisation. It was run voluntarily by teachers who wanted to bring environmental issues into their teaching practice. Today, MEEN has become an independent charity. In January 2001 a coordinator was employed to support and build the network. Since then, MEEN has provided a range of CPD services, training sessions and networking events, conferences and numerous projects around sustainability with schools and educational providers. MEEN is now over 20 years old and still upholds its core values: it was set up to support its members and to promote the sustainability agenda within schools and to agencies working with schools. The first edition of Beehive, the MEEN newsletter, was produced in 1994, and despite a few changes in its format, continues to be produced today. MEEN has undergone two significant changes due to the impacts of austerity. Firstly, our remit changed from serving the city of Manchester to cover Greater Manchester. MEEN has always had members from schools in other parts of Greater Manchester so it seemed appropriate, especially as services in the other nine Council areas were being reduced, to widen our remit. Secondly, we now focus increasingly on projects working directly with schools either through the curriculum or working with young people in their Eco Committees.

EVULVA is a health literacy platform used to promote education about vulvovaginal health and care at key intervention points. These stages include pre-puberty, puberty, fertility and family planning, peri-/menopause, and post-menopause. We are aiming to develop content that is customized to each user’s literacy level and to present information in a way that is culturally affirming, trans/queer-inclusive, and 100% FREE. 6/10 adults in the UK are unable to understand and act on health information Health literacy costs America an estimated 238 billion dollars annually and the economic health costs of poor health literacy in England is crudely estimated to be 4.95 billion annually. Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic/ Black and Indigenous People of Colour (BAME/BIPOC), trans/queer and other marginalized groups are disproportionately represented in these numbers, making this a human rights and public health issue. EVULVA is designed to improve health literacy and reduce these health inequalities through evidence-based research and the support of BAME/BIPOC community leaders and allied health professionals focusing on needs specific to culturally diverse groups. There are more than 5.8 million results when you type ‘vulvovaginal health’ into google. Some websites will have information that is too difficult for the reader to consume while others will underrepresent cultures, isolating people from obtaining life-saving information about their body. More than 4 in 10 adults in the UK struggle with health content. That number raises to 6 in 10 adults when numbers and statistics are added to health content. Many websites hypersexualise BAME/BIPOC groups adding another level of stress and deleteriously adding to decreased mental wellness around vulvovaginal health concern

Helping small and start-up businessesOur Founder Nikki started her business at the age of 23, in her final year of university. She hit upon an unmet demand for clothing and lingerie to fit bigger busted girls. She had no prior textile or business experience, but knew there was a market for the product. With almost no cash, she set out to launch her start-up business but hit multiple challenges along the way – not understanding how to promote her business online, how to generate sales, run online ads or manage her own SEO, and no budget to pay someone for help, she had no choice but to figure it out through a matrix of failed experiments, free online information and training workshops where they were affordable (and not many were!) Eventually, one sale became two, and two became ten, and within a couple of years the business took off – by 2010 Nikki had been awarded the Natwest Everywoman Artemis Business Award and in 2011 appeared on Dragons Den, securing private investment of £250,000 after the show had aired. This enabled her to scale her brand, re-shore production to the UK and eventually culminated in running a factory in Preston with over a dozen machinists, and supplying her brand to the high street. But her frustration remained around the lack of practical help and support for startup business owners. Training courses seldom left her with any usable information to implement – they would talk about the benefits of Facebook marketing, or SEO, or Social Media but never gave enough information to actually go and do it yourself.

The program was put together by myself, Paul Coshott – Liverpool Personal Trainer, as I felt the classes needed a structure, similar to my Kids Martial Arts classes, and it gave the students something to work towards, as they are graded every 3 – 4 months, and are presented with certificates and trophies, on completion of exam I hear a lot in the media about failing schools and children failing at school. Our aim at the studio, is to give children and their schools in Liverpool, a helping hand to get back on track. The Boxing fundamentals program works hand in hand with a child’s schoolwork, providing improved self discipline, self confidence, concentration, mental alertness, co operation, goal setting advice and anti bully skills All young students in my children’s programs are required to take a specially designed form to their teachers at school once a month. This has to be signed off by the teacher before the student can be considered to be put forward for their next exam or martial arts grade.
