LOOKING FOR: ADULT FICTION Kate Barker has worked in publishing for over twenty years as an agent, commissioning editor and ghostwriter. Before setting up her own company, Kate Barker Literary Agency, she spent ten years at Penguin, where she was an Editorial Director for Viking, acquiring fiction and non-fiction. She has also worked for Orion, Curtis Brown and for digital publisher Bookouture. She is looking for commercial and reading group fiction for adults and would love to find an unputdownable thriller like Rosamund Lupton's Three Hours, a funny, heartbreaking contemporary novel like Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams or a romantic comedy with a unique premise like The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary. She also loves historical fiction and series crime. Kate would like you to submit a covering letter, one page synopsis and the first three chapters (Max 5,000 words) of your completed manuscript in a single word document. The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (RQF) formerly known as PTLLS, has been designed to introduce teaching for individuals who aspire or currently work in adult education. This includes FE colleges, training providers, workplace training departments and/or Local Authorities. It is a nationally recognised qualification and is also often the preference for employers to source as an accredited train-the-trainer qualification. This qualification includes written assignments and a practical micro-teach session, which can be completed remotely. Online Remote Tutor-led Sessions This version of the course allows you to attend two days of online sessions led by an experienced tutor. Then come back online 2-3 weeks later to deliver your micro-teach session to your peers. Use this gap in time to prepare your micro-teach and complete the written work for the qualification. This allows you to fully complete in as little as 2-3 weeks. The micro-teach date is flexible and you can also enrol for self-study learning if preferred.
The purpose of these qualifications is to enable learners to coach clients – one to one and in small groups – towards their health and fitness goals. Learners will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to plan and deliver creative and personalised exercise programmes, provide nutritional advice and support clients with their overall lifestyle management.
LOOKING FOR: ADULT FICTION, NON-FICTION Hannah joined the publishing industry in 2017 after a degree in German & Spanish and a Masters in Translation Studies, with a passion for literary translation. After two years scouting for international publishers and production companies, she then spent four years at Northbank Talent Management, where she represented a wide range of authors including Phoebe Luckhurst, Rebecca Ryan, Marion Todd, Nina Millns and Jonathan Whitelaw. After a year as acting Head of Media Rights at Penguin Random House UK, Hannah joined Watson, Little as Literary and Book-to-Screen Agent in 2024. In fiction, Hannah is looking for excellent writing which marries a strong voice with a compelling plot, across a range of genres. She loves ambitious stories that take her to unexpected places – either in style or setting – particularly if they sit in that upmarket-literary crossover space. She feels just as immersed in an intimate coming-of-age novel as in an incisive family drama or darkly funny psychological thriller, particularly where there’s a fresh approach or something to say about the world we live in. Some of her recent favourites have included Really Good, Actually by Monica Heisey, Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson, The Whalebone Theatre by Joanna Quinn, and Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister. Please note that she is not the right agent for sci-fi, fantasy, action thrillers, YA or children’s books. She is also looking for narrative non-fiction with a beautiful voice and new insight into an experience or place, and is particularly interested in nature writing, memoir, and literary ways into genres such as true crime, history or the environment. Over the years, she’s loved The Salt Path by Raynor Winn, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Seven Signs of Life by Aoife Abbey and The Panic Years by Nell Frizzell. Hannah would like you to submit your fiction as a covering letter, 1-2 page synopsis and the first 5,000 words of your manuscript in a single word document. For non-fiction, she would like to see:- 1-page synopsis – to give an overview of what the book will offer the reader and how it's different from other books out there on this topic A detailed proposed contents list, including proposed sub-section headings as well as chapter headings – to give a sense of the overall reader journey (this is not included in the word count) (In addition to the paid sessions, Hannah is kindly offering one free session for low income/underrepresented writers.
