In 2018, Dame Tessa Jowell led a call to action on behalf of all brain tumour patients to tackle brain tumours, recognising that too little progress has been made in the treatment of patients with this devastating disease. Lord O’Shaughnessy, the then Undersecretary of State for Health, responded by convening members of the brain tumour community to design a new national strategy. And so, the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission was formed by a group of passionate academics, doctors, members of professional and patient organisations and patients. Today, the national effort has grown in scale and size. The Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission is now a Community Interest Company which manages and supports a national portfolio of several transformational programmes in the areas of research, trials, training and patients. Our work is funded and supported by the NIHR, The Tessa Jowell Foundation, CRUK, The Minderoo Foundation, The Brain Tumour Charity, Brain Tumour Research, Brainstrust, Brain Tumour Support and Act for Cancer. The mission is chaired by Professor Richard Gilbertson (Chair of Board of Guarantors) and led by Dr Nicky Huskens (CEO) on a day to day basis. Please click here to see the full TJBCM team. Octavia Raheem is a wife, mother, author of two books Pause, Rest, Be and Gather, rest coach, chief executive daydreaming officer, and yoga educator. She founded Devoted to Rest + Starshine & Clay Online Yoga and Meditation Studio for Black Women and Women of Color. Within her rest and work she threads poetry, prayer, and time tested practices into a blanket of experience under which individuals can gather and rebuke stress, fatigue, and burnout. The foundation of Octavia’s rest work is Black Church (rooted in the South USA), restorative yoga, Yoga Nidra, and meditation. Her deepest offerings lead driven, ambitious, visionary, and highly impactful women to awaken the fullness of their wisdom, power, and clarity through rest. Octavia has over 20 years of experience and well over 10,000 hours of designing and delivering classes, restshops, workshops, immersions, and trainings that transform, heal, and restore individuals and organizations. In 2021 Yoga Journal magazine recognized Octavia as one of fifteen experienced yoga professionals who have elevated and changed the field on a global scale. Closer to home and as a beacon in her local community, she was named one of four luminaries who have lit the way and created new avenues to yoga in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Southeast in September 2019 by Natural Awakening Magazine. Additionally her writing, rest, and work have been featured in Mantra, Tricycle, Well + Good, Atlanta Magazine, CNN, and at Essence Festival Wellhouse Atlanta.

the steam workshop

The Steam Workshop was formed in 2013 by Simon, or should I say,..... me,.... who having spent the previous 10 years building his Chiropractic clinic businesses in the Chester area was keen to start a new business centered around his lifelong hobby and passion for model engineering and steam. Together with my friend John, (who at that time was working as a tool-maker pattern -maker), we bought a tired 3" scale Plastow Burrell traction engine. The intention was to re-build the model as a fun project and then to sell it on at a profit to see if a workshop business centered around model engineering could be made viable. John was also re-building a 5" gauge BR Britannia for a friend at the same time, and so those two re-builds (SW Rebuilds number 1 & 2) really set the foundations for what the company has since grown into. I've been playing trains from an early age. My grandad, Geoff Nicholson was well known in model engineering and steam circles, and familiar to many for his annual appointment at the Midlands ME exhibition where he would demonstrate 'dome bashing' and sheet metal work to the visitors in the workshop corner. Geoff was a lifelong and prolific model engineer, and I spent a lot of time both in his workshop and putting thousands of miles on his locos while he drank tea and chatted to everyone!

It’s easy to feel hopeless and anxious about wide scale unemployment and great need in the world. We decided to take action in this area, rather than give in to hopelessness. This takes the form of a job and business training model that is easily replicable and can be self-sustainable. The training is available to all, and emphasises practical and soft skills that are essential to thriving in the working and business world. We are a registered non-profit organization registered in the USA(501c3) and South Africa(NPO), but we have W4AL Centers that operate in many countries around the world. Our dream is to see a center in every town and city in the world where there is poverty and need What we do In 2007, we started planting WORK 4 A LIVING training centers where the unemployed could come and be fully equipped to join the workforce or start a business. We saw that without networks, family help, or a knowledge of how to pursue a job or career, many people simply did not know how to progress and thrive. But we don’t just believe in handing out jobs or funds to start businesses; we believe in true empowerment. To us, this means not only educating people with skills that are valuable, but equipping them with mindsets that empower them to own their circumstances, thrive in their daily work, and have hope for the future.
