Who : Creative Catalyst (Scotland) CIC is a social enterprise which supports young people into Creative Careers. After establishing and running a similar two year pilot project for young creatives as part of the lead up to Perth Creative Exchange and The Famous Grouse Ideas Centre opening , founding director Helen O’Brien decided to take the model of this project forward as a social enterprise. In September 2019 we successfully received ‘Start It’ funding from Firstport, and moved into our new studio at Perth Creative Exchange in November 2019. We have just received Firstport ‘Build It’ funding to support and embed our development in 2021-22. We offer creative employability opportunities for young people who face barriers to employment and training in Perth & Kinross. This project is specifically targeted at young creative individuals who need support to develop their confidence in their creative skills and abilities, and signpost to other opportunities and experiences that will support them with next steps of a creative career. We work alongside other 16+ support agencies in Perth & Kinross who refer young people to us, and we welcome individuals and support workers to contact us directly. How: We offer work experience and mentoring opportunities with professional artists and makers who run live creative projects for us, from design and prototyping an idea, to making a final product, marketing and selling; visit shop here. These projects develop a broad spectrum of practical creative and transferable skills including using imagination, problem solving, clear communication, persistence, self discipline, collaboration and working to a deadline. Teaching has always been Lian’s passion. At the age of 18 Lian started teaching dance which developed into establishing her own highly successful dance school Learning Curves Dance which she ran for 20 years. Lian has had numerous highlights during her teaching career from choreographing team performances at London theatres including Her Majesty’s Theatre, Sadler’s Wells and The Royal Albert Hall and Birmingham performance venues such as the NEC and the Symphony Hall. She has also travelled with her students overseas to Europe and Asia performing at Disneyland Paris and Beijing Theatre, China. Lian has trained over 500 students for team performances, prepared over 3000 students for 32 IDTA examination sessions and received Freestyle Scholarship Awards nominations for 5 professional candidates and 18 amateur students. She has judged at numerous ADFP Freestyle Dance Competitions, including the prestigious international Disco Kid Competition at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Lian was honoured to lecture for the IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association), hosting amateur and professional workshops. She has produced, directed and choreographed over 16 theatre shows, raised over £10,000 for charity, formed the successful Performing Arts Project with sister school StarStruck Performing Arts Academy, taught GCSE dance at Arden School, cultivated successful relationships and taught classes in over 16 Primary and Secondary Schools in Solihull and Warwickshire and launched a second Dance School in Southam, Warwickshire. After further professional development and with a keen interest in anatomy and physiology, Lian qualified to train candidates to professional teacher level. To date she has trained 26 individuals to professional dance teacher status, 5 of whom have received IDTA Scholarship nominations and 1 student who has gained the 2020 John Dilworth Scholarship in the Freestyle category. Now Lian has added yoga to her long list of qualifications and is a Yoga Alliance Professional 250 hour qualified Teacher. Lian enjoys teaching Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga. Lian successfully teaches online and face to face classes. Yoga and dance complement each other beautifully and through her training Lian can bring elements of each discipline to enhance her teaching.

Gymtopia North East Gymnastics Club opened on the 18th November 2014 and first began in both Kenton School sports hall and Wallbottle School sports hall with 3 gymnasts and 2 coaches; one of them being head coach and director Felicity Brown. Felicity had always dreamed of opening her own club to cater for the local community and beyond, giving the potential for participants from all backgrounds to enjoy the sport of Gymnastics. Gymtopia quickly expanded to include multiple classes and in April 2017 opened in its own premises in Brunswick, Newcastle to accommodate the growing number of gymnasts in the club. Gymtopia is fully affiliated with British Gymnastics. Gymtopia now houses over 500+ Gymnasts from Grassroots to national level and hopefully in the future compulsory elite. Beyond this, Gymtopia has 12 recreational classes per week and has developed a growing preschool section to encourage any future gymnasts and increase participation levels from an earlier age. Gymtopia aims to provide opportunities for all, including recreational, competitive and coaching opportunities. Gymtopia believes that sporting participation has great value in the lives of all, beyond the sport. Gymnastics teaches hard work, determination, teamwork and discipline. It is with this work ethic that has enabled Gymtopia to have gymnasts compete all over the country since its opening in 2014, including representing the North of England region at National Finals multiple times. In 2018, Gymtopia also expanded to International competition, competing in Malta. The gymnastics club offers a range of disciplines including recreation, preschool, women’s artistic, women’s general, men’s general and Teamgym. Gymtopia aims to give back to all its members and so Felicity has created the club to be a non-profit community club, all proceeds are invested back into the club for future expansions, increased participation and gymnast development. Gymtopia is currently in the process of becoming a CASC (Community Amateur Sports Club) in order to support our core values of being a non-profit club and catering to the wider community.
