Shalamar Children’s Homes – Isola, Cairn, and shortly Glebeland – are based in family-sized houses around rural Essex. We are residential children’s homes with a therapeutic approach. Our aim is to resolve issues in young people and not to merely contain them. We achieve this by using attachment-based care and to look for the communication behind any behaviour. We believe behaviour is a form of communication. We would look for the meaning behind all negative behaviour in the young people within our care. From this, we work with our young people helping them to not only to control their negative behaviours, but also attempting to work through the issues which are the cause of these behaviours. Shalamar carers use Dan Hughes’ PACE method to gain a positive attachment with the young people within our care. PACE stands for Playfulness – Acceptance – Curiosity – Empathy. Given time, we aim to create a stable, secure base and safe haven for all young people staying at Shalamar, allowing the space and the confidence to heal and develop. At Shalamar, there are daily community meetings where young people have the opportunity to voice any issues they have with their care, or state how it can be improved. This space allows for the young people to feel listened to, raising their confidence, self-esteem and making them feel valued and cared for. Shalamar’s work looks to change the negative way that young people view themselves and the adults around them. Through attachment-based nurture we restore their self-belief and provide positive experiences with adults who care. We understand that many children who display challenging behaviour have had trauma at some point in their life. This usually manifests itself in emotional developmental delay. Therefore we treat the child at their developmental/emotional age, rather than strict biological age. This creates a realistic and settled environment for the young person who can succeed and receive praise for their work and efforts. We also provide a psychodynamic behavioural approach, which is worked alongside the attachment framework, where we bring the subconscious to the conscious. This allows the young people to understand why they are feeling and acting the way they are and is the first step to taking control of their actions.

When arriving at SCDC head to the main reception to speak with our receptionist, upon your arrival you will be given a welcome pack this will include everything you need to attend for the duration of your stay. Uniforms are NOT required at SCDC, we give you the option to buy. Clothing needed for your child/yourself : anything that is breathable, Leggings, Joggers, T-shirts/Hoodies, Trainers for footwear is perfect. The dancer/performer can join in or watch during the FREE trial, parents must wait in the waiting room provided & also view from the viewing windows, whilst enjoying a nice cup of Tea or Coffee. Dulwich Riding School is approved by the Association of British Riding Schools and has recently been awarded a five star Health and Safety approval from our local Council, Dulwich Riding School was founded in 1961 by Mr James Thomas Bellman, himself an expert horseman and instructor who spent a lifetime with horses and riders. The late Mr Bellman passed on his knowledge and riding school to his daughter Linda Gray who has sadly now passed away too, she has passed the Riding School onto Jaye Montebello, her daughter, the current Manager and Proprietor. Jaye was the Manageress (now proprietor) and is still hands on along with other family members who are still running the stables, also part of the Bellman family. Ellie is part of the family who currently rides and instructs at our London riding school. Lynne is our Health and Safety Manager (she shouts the loudest) and Amelyne and Ishka have been with us on and off for years, `University and Equine College being their breaks, we specialise in nervous and novice riders and are brilliant with building confidence. OJ also part of the Bellman family is currently a Junior Instructor, Ellie and Jaye our instructors specialising in working with Advanced riders and Jumping Lessons. Bonnie, Alice, Lydia, Melissa, Neveah and Natasha are Junior Instuctors and are especially good with children and parties, they are voluntary although been with us for years, however, a couple of them will be full staff from September, watch this space. NO one instructor can be booked for a lesson due to rotas and schedules although we will do out best to accommodate where possible. Our staff, volunteers, working pupils and family give their time helping Dulwich Riding School flourish and maintain the standards Mr J. T. Bellman set. Lots of our team are volunteers, they are a strong a valuable part of our team and without them we could not maintain the standards and level of professional care to all our Riders and Horses at Dulwich Riding School. WHAT DRIVES US Passion and determination to uphold Dulwich Riding School's reputation and high standards that Mr Bellman attained. Each instructor feels very proud when a client passes an exam, or completes a successful course or just generally leaves the stables feeling a sense of achievement or just having lots of fun. We are a cookery school for disabled adults 18 plus. At StedyChefs we teach all about the joy and fun to be had whilst cooking ,not only helping improve life skills but building self confidence and making friends along the way. Our whole building is covered in fun graffiti, our chefs wear a full uniform and different coloured bandanas making their time here as fun as possible. We also teach other activities such as art and music, the Beatles actually played in our building in 1961. Our chefs cook everything from scratch and not only this, they grow their own vegetables in our outside space as well as doing outside cooking in warmer months. Our chefs do food related trips also once every six weeks. Some of our chefs volunteer and in the past have worked in local cafes and football stadiums. Our youngest student is 18 and our eldest is 63 years old. The food our chefs create on a daily basis can only be described as phenomenal. We are also part of the International Cookery School Association (School Of Excellence) We also teach our students health and safety in the kitchen. We recently had Merseyside Fire Brigade in our centre to deliver a lesson on hazards that may occur in a kitchen and how to handle them safely. Merseyside Police have also attended our centre to deliver on a lesson on how to stay safe when using the internet. In January of this year, seven of our students gained their Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene In The Kitchen qualification. It took us over a year of visually and verbally training our students in preparation for their test. As they passed, they are now able to legally work in a professional kitchen environment. One of the students is now actively looking for paid work in the catering sector using his newly acquired qualification. We have also partnered with The Trussell Trust and are now running a food bank from or building with the help of our wonderful students.
