Oxford BSAC Scuba Diving Club is the award-winning Oxford Branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC). The branch was founded in 1956 – a few years after the BSAC itself, making it one of the oldest diving clubs formed in the UK. As you might imagine we have a rich history and some very experienced members. Our club is run entirely by volunteers. We train people to dive and snorkel but we also welcome qualified divers to join us (whoever they trained with). We organise regular diving trips to Dorset and inland sites. We run several trips a year to longer-range destinations – in the recent past, these have included the Red Sea, Gozo (Malta), Scapa Flow, Sound of Mull, Plymouth and the Isles of Scilly. We also have close relationships with other local BSAC branches including the Oxford University Underwater Exploration Group (OUUEG) with whom we often collaborate. The activities of the branch centre around three areas, the clubhouse, pool training and diving. We also carry a decent level of equipment and have a great hard boat moored in Weymouth – all of which help to make us a successful dive club which has been going for over 60 years. We are a mature club with a friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere. The branch has around 70 members from the Oxford area stretching from Bicester in the North to Didcot in the South and from Witney in the West to Aylesbury in the East. We even have some members who live here during the week and go home on weekends. We cover a good cross-section of Oxford society. Ages range from young children who snorkel to senior citizens that dive or who are social members. We are always happy to welcome new members, be they untrained novices, experienced divers or instructors – no matter who they have trained with. After leaving University I worked for a bakery company which is where my journey in Food Safety began: I went on a basic course where the trainer (an Environmental Health Officer) showed us an disturbing object which he had found in food, and told us various horror stories such as seeing rats in kitchens and about many other experience during his work. This is where the fascination began. Not a glamorous career for a young girl, looking down drains and climbing down to dirty cellars, but it provided plenty of tales to fascinate people at dinner parties! After a career change which resulted me spending 25 years as a government food inspector, I decided to hang up my badge and defect to the other side. Literally Game keeper tuned poacher or should I say head chef turned food critic? I wanted to help businesses obtain a good rating and allow them to not feel terrified when the inspector calls at their premises So I set up The Food Safety Company in 2015 and have successfully helped many businesses to obtain – and maintain – high food hygiene ratings. I have also enjoyed conducting accredited and bespoke training courses for clients, and creating bespoke food safety management systems for many businesses. To date I have a 100% success rate with clients wishing to obtain a 5 rating (if they follow my advice!). This include all types of business; from small cafes to large, prestigious wedding venues I would like to share this success with you. On a personal note, I consider myself to be a foodie: I like talking about food; cooking it; eating it and more importantly sharing it with friends and family. People often ask if I think about anything other than food. My answer is “very rarely”! I also like to visit food festivals and restaurants, trying to keep ahead of the current food trends and products, and I support Alice Charity Food Bank.

My name is Denise Thompson/Coutu. I’ve been teaching art classes and giving parties for over 10 years. I love working with kids. I’m a mom, and have also had my own daycare. I also come from a family of teachers. I get great satisfaction from seeing my students grow, both in their skill level and their understanding of the arts. I grew up in Hudson, NH and studied mainly in Boston. My educational experience includes a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Tufts University; a Fine Arts Diploma from the Museum School in Boston (5 yrs), and Certificates in Graphic Design and Web Design from schools in Manchester, NH. I have been a graphic design professional for over 18 years. I worked in the art department in MA working with digital files and preparing them for press. I have also worked in the theatre industry in Boston, which was fun and exciting. My other professional skills include scenic painting, oil painting and drawing, sign making, jewelry making, clay work, mosaic making, sewing and cake decorating. I would love to teach anyone who is interested in learning the skills to make beautiful works of art. Hence Al-Iman School has taken it upon itself to provide a balanced education that caters to both the needs: secular and spiritual. Parents who feel the need to train their children for the Here and The Hereafter send their children to Al-Iman to ensure that not only academically but morally and spiritually their children attain the ‘whole’ (secular) and ‘holy (religious) values. The School is accredited by the New York City and the New York State Board of Education. INCEPTION AND GROWTH On the orders of Ayatollah al-Khoei, Al-Iman School in New York opened its doors to four children in September 1990; with that it started an evolutionary process that, within four years, resulted in the first fully fledged Pre K-12 Islamic school in North America. The growth from Kindergarten to Grade School to Junior High to High School can only be described as phenomenal. Every year, between 1990-1994 several grades were added simultaneously as applications poured in, pregnant mothers registered their children and waiting lists grew by the day. In September 1994, Al-Iman School added the high school component and in 1998 the first class of seniors – a historic moment – graduated to go to various reputable universities and colleges such as Stony Brook, St John’s, Columbia, New York University, Baruch etc. in the country. Since 1994, many an Al-Iman Junior High School students sat for and aced the Specialized Entry Examinations to High Schools and Academies. Our teaching and research is closely linked to our impact and engagement activities and our staff and students are leaders and enablers of creative and cultural practice in the region, nationally and internationally. A key feature of the School of Arts and Cultures is that many of our staff and students have been, and in many cases continue to be, both academics and practitioners (e.g. musicians, artists, journalists, PR professionals and film-makers). Our musicians, artists and film-makers continue to perform and show their work on a world stage and this applies to our students too. For example, in 2017 our folk music students accompanied our Vice-Chancellor on a trip to China where they performed to great acclaim. Many colleagues from the School of Arts and Cultures work in co-productive ways with sectoral partners and to actively contribute to practice and policy making (e.g. making digital apps, co-creating exhibitions with curators, writing policy briefs for external bodies, investigating the UK’s live music industry, influencing national debates around media habits, the creative arts and cultural industries.) The result is that much of our teaching is extremely well-integrated from the outset with initiatives around employability and employer engagement, and our much of our research is readily translatable into impact and engagement work. Our staff and students organise an impressive range of public events (concerts, talks, performances and exhibitions) on a weekly basis which reach a diversity of audiences across the city and wider region. The School is also strongly engaged with issues of equality and diversity not just in terms of Athena Swan but also in terms of research and teaching specialisms of its staff and students. Colleagues are involved in broader initiatives such as the Martin Luther King celebrations, International Women’s Day, and the Centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918. Freeman College is located in the Sterling Works in the heart of Sheffield. The Sterling Works was previously occupied by CW Fletcher and Sons who manufactured silver cutlery, tableware and trophies. The area surrounding Freeman College has transformed from industrial factories into education and research buildings, including Sheffield Hallam University. Freeman College extends through the city to Butcher Works, which is next door and houses the Academy of Makers and Fusion Café, and High Riggs, biodynamic gardens and woodlands, located in the greenbelt surrounding Sheffield. Curriculum Sheffield has been famous for cutlery manufacturing since the 1800’s and therefore Freeman College has a strong metal curriculum, and the signature craft is silver spoon forging. Using traditional methods, students learn to hand forge spoons, forks and knives using copper at first and once they have developed the skills, they have the opportunity to work with silver. In addition to forging, students can participate in a wide and varied range of other craft activities including; Whittletang, Textiles, Copper Spinning, Pewter work, Jewellery, Iron Age Forge, and Green Woodwork. Connecting to the Land High Riggs is a 9 acre biodynamic market garden where students can grow and harvest healthy vegetables to use in the residential homes, cafes and canteens. In addition, a very successful community veg box scheme is run out of High Riggs, and students help with harvesting and preparing the vegetables and ensuring the boxes are ready for collection by the community. There are also chickens on the site and students help with collecting eggs and feeding and caring for the animals year round. High Riggs provides an opportunity for students to come out of the city centre and work on the land, experiencing the weather and the seasons. Through the seasons and the associated festivals, students develop a sense of rhythm and time and a deeper understanding of the natural world around them.
