We are delighted to welcome our new Executive Director Paul Smyth, who comes to us with a wealth of experience and a strong reputation for ground breaking youth work. I am thrilled to have taken up the post of Executive Director with Politics in Action – and I want to start by congratulating my predecessor Patricia O’Lynn on her election to the Northern Ireland Assembly. We live in a turbulent time for politics around the world, nationally and locally – and this makes the work of supporting young people’s role as active citizens more challenging and even more important. We are emerging from a global pandemic which has put unprecedented restrictions on the lives and freedoms of young people, and which has impacted their learning, their social lives, their relationships and for some their mental health. Politics in Action responded proactively to these challenges by moving workshops online and ensuring continuity. I am optimisticwe can return to largely face-to-face delivery of our programmes with young people in schools and other settings, and can find new ways of engaging with more young people and in particular those who are not normally invited into conversations about politics and citizenship. Much of what we already do is in collaboration with schools and with other youth organisations. I see so much potential for additional collaborations that allow our little charity to punch above its weight. One of the many attractions of the role is the excellent Board of Trustees who provide strong governance, leadership and vision for Politics in Action. They bring significant social and political capital to the charity and use it in the interests of young people and our shared future. I would love to hear your ideas about how Politics in Action should direct our energies over the coming months and years. We were formed to carry on activities which benefit the community and, in particular, further the social, health, economic and environmental interests of the residents of the Manhood Peninsula in West Sussex by: - Acquiring and managing land and other assets; Providing support to disadvantaged groups to enable them to overcome the obstacles they face; Supporting, facilitating and delivering projects and activities; Establishing arrangements to ensure our profits are used for their benefit. When we registered, Companies House asked us to identify our main areas of business activity: - 68209 - Other letting and operating of own or leased real estate; 82990 - Other business support service activities not elsewhere classified; 85600 - Educational support services; 90040 - Operation of arts facilities Perhaps the best way to understand what we do, is to think of us as a charitable 'gap-plugger.' We provide small groups with the individualised support, assistance and / or expertise they need but do not have amongst their volunteers and cannot afford to 'buy in.' An example of this is acting as a banker by holding monies in trust and paying suppliers direct on the group's behalf when asked to do so. This simplifies the administrative burden greatly for groups and gives them more time to focus on what they set out to do. We also provide Governance advice so groups can get less bogged down in red tape. Digital services are also an area we help with, providing advice on how groups can promote themselves, and help them do so if they wish. Some of the groups we work with feature on this site. You will see some groups are publicised on this website - if that might be of help to you get in touch. We operate in a supportive way by only helping if (and when) asked. We play an important role within the profession of counselling in the UK and in May 2013 the Society was one of the first organisations to gain Accredited Register status with the Professional Standards Authority Accredited Register programme. Our belief is that counselling (and related therapies) should be seen as a vocation (not just a job but a worthy occupation) and that the relationship between counsellor and client is important for the outcome of therapy. We support and promote counselling and counsellors, offering a wide variety of benefits to our members and training providers. We have also created and published online CPD courses to support healthcare providers and those in public-facing roles. As an Accredited Register holder we meet the robust and exacting standards set by the Professional Standards Authority with particular emphasis on public safety and assuring that the best interests of the clients are protected. The National Counselling Society believes that all Accredited Registers should be seen as equal. To this end, we were instrumental in gaining recognition within the NHS for all Accredited Registers. NHS Choices information list Accredited Registers to reflect what should be equality of choice for all clients and patients. In addition, NHS Employers has added content encouraging the use and detailing the benefits of Accredited Registers, and the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme recognises the NCS alongside other Registers. We’re also very pleased that, again as a result of our efforts, Health Education England has amended the information on the NHS Health Careers website also to be in line with the aforementioned changes on NHS Choices and NHS employers sites, and promote inclusive hiring practices We are a not for profit organisation and the high standards of our Accredited Register are externally verified by the Professional Standards Authority. The organisation is bound by appropriate rules of governance including a constitution, codes of ethics, and a complaints procedure.

We met away from our home countries and settled in England decades ago. We are both keenly aware of how fortunate we have been in escaping the tragedy and destruction caused by war, occupation and poor governance. We also realise the importance of a strong civil society and the rule of law, of exposure to diversity and tolerance and the lasting impact of a good education. We established the Asfari Foundation in 2006, after years of reactive giving. We wanted to create a long-term impact that focuses on the issues we felt most passionately about – education, and the building of a strong civil society which is the foundation for any fair, resilient, sustainable and productive society. We are proud of what the Foundation has accomplished in its short life. Whilst there is no limit to what should be done, especially in the countries we originally came from, through our partners we have provided scholarships, fellowships and training to hundreds of young people across the UK and the Middle East, established the Asfari Centre for Civil Society and Citizenship at the American University in Beirut and provided relief and education to tens of thousands of Syrians, displaced following the recent uprising, to name just a few programmes. Young people deserve a good education and the right to live in tolerant and pluralistic societies. So much ability cannot be wasted. Hope for a better life will not die in the face of today’s grim realities, especially in the Middle East. We want to play a small role in realising the potential of the youth, to make manifest our shared dreams of a safer, more inclusive and happier tomorrow.

We are a pioneering community-led learners' co-operative focused on improving the educational, physical and social well-being of children and families contextualised within family and community empowerment. We are commonly known as uLearn Naturally Learners' Co-operative. We are an umbrella organisation serving collectives with assistance in forming Abundance Centres Member Trusts. We also work to build various kinds of educational infrastructure to support our Member Trusts and the general public. These infrastructure works are mainly related to our Home-School-Knowledge Exchange project and our emerging uLearn Naturally Media Services. In general the objectives of the Trust are to carry out activities which benefit the communities of UK and members of the Trust in regard to community engagement, family directed learning and personal development in the realms of education, well-being and social networking. In particular, our mission is to establish and maintain centres of service with the principles and general intention of bringing about better community engagement, creativity, cross-curricular learning and/or unified ways of coming to know that which specifically enables and enriches the learning of the sciences and maths through the arts, intelligent play and the dissemination of wholistic (nature-centric) pedagogical (learning) practices.
