Better Community Development

better community development

Since 1981, BCD has served the disadvantaged of Little Rock’s 12th Street Corridor. BCD, Inc. began as Black Community Developers. It was initially an outreach program of Theressa Hoover Memorial United Methodist Church. In 2010, BCD became Better Community Development. This name change served to reflect the inclusive nature of BCD’s programs. In 1992, Rev. Dr. William H. Robinson, Jr. formed the Fighting Back Initiative. Funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and an alliance with the City of Little Rock made the program possible. In later years, it would evolve into the Neighborhood Support Center. State, federal, and private support along with a half-cent tax were the primary sources of funding. As a result of a partnership with the City and HUD, the Hoover Treatment Center was created. The Center provides outpatient and residential services for people with substance abuse problems. The Center also includes a homeless shelter, an HIV/AIDS ministry, job training, and permanent and supportive housing. Not only do BCD’s programs impact the lives of individuals but extend into the community’s infrastructure. Building affordable housing for low-to-moderate-income families makes a great impact south of 630. The Affordable Housing Program is certified by the Arkansas Development Finance Authority to provide monthly homebuyer-education courses. Participants become eligible for state grants to assist with home-buying costs. Instructors are volunteers from four area banks who assess the curriculum. Today, BCD is expanding its reach and vision to include even more important challenges facing the city. Its latest expansion, the Empowerment Center, houses a state-licensed treatment program and permanent housing for people with special needs. It provides a revitalized facility for career, life skills, and technology training. It also focuses on environmental issues right in the heart of the same neighborhood where BCD was created.

A school system which is the most inspirational and supportive environment possible for the physical, emotional, psychological and intellectual development of young people. OUR MISSION To support young people in the exploration of their emotional development and creative potential. To support those who mentor, teach or lead students in the promotion of inspiring, effective and ethical practice. WHAT IS MYTHODRAMA? The purpose of playing is to hold the mirror up to nature. William Shakespeare – Hamlet Mythodrama is a unique form of experiential learning that allows participants to “act in” desired behaviours and attributes. We employ a powerful combination of theatre practice, psychology, mythology and organisational development. It provides inspiration and learning for lasting change. So much is at stake and so much depends on the psychological constitution of modern man. Does the individual know that s/he is the make weight that tips the scales? Carl Jung The psychological aspect broadens perspective and unleashes new possibilities in individuals and organisations. It creates a context to find greater meaning in our work. The abuse of greatness is when it disjoins Remorse from power William Shakespeare – Julius Caesar Shakespeare’s genius provides timeless insights into the human nature of leadership, at all levels. Each of his plays contains a great mythology on the human condition. We can project our own issues on to these mythologies, to gain deeper insight into the nature of the challenges we face in our own lives and work. All this is done in a practical, relevant and down-to-earth manner and is designed to engage even those who would normally feel out of their comfort zone with a theatrical metaphor. Mythological symbols touch and exhilarate centres of life beyond the reach of vocabularies of reason and coercion Joseph Campbell Mythodrama extends the range of participants’ thinking, behaviour and action.

Clinical documentation is the most critical link in providing proof to the insurance company of the treatment being provided. It is also the record of the client’s progress as they move through their treatment episode. Each level of care has specific criteria for medical necessity. Initial authorizations and requests for continued stay all rely completely on the documentation proving medical necessity is being met. JDS Consulting’s UR and Clinical Services Department provide a wide range of training to ensure that your facilities documentation supports the authorizations being requested. From an overview of medical necessity, to training on specific documents, i.e intake assessments, group notes, utilization review forms, etc, we can pinpoint any areas that may require attention. We pride ourselves on working within the system already in place within each individual facility, tailoring our skills to the identified needs of the clinical team. On site training sessions are available as often as your facility deems necessary. JDS Consulting will work closely with your clinicians at each step of your client’s stay at your facility. We are here to provide support for your treatment team, allowing them to focus on the clients. The UR specialist assigned to your facility will be reading through your documentation daily and send emails with any concerns the run across. Open and thorough communication is our standard and we are able to respond quickly to the demands of insurance companies. JDS Consulting provides high quality, hands on, clinical training. Chrysalis Craft Coventry

Coventry

Chrysalis Craft Coventry CIC was founded in March 2020 in response to the urgent unmet needs of BAME and migrant communities who were disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdown has challenged the mental health and wellbeing of everyone, more so for asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in our communities. Many have experienced unimaginable trauma and have seen major disruptions in their life already. The pandemic has amplified further the existing mental health problems. Often left in limbo, not able to take on higher education studies and not allowed to work (with many refugees under or unemployed) and likely to face loneliness or worse, direct discrimination, within their new communities. Chrysalis Craft Coventry CIC run sessions and activities to help with healing, using art and different artistic methods for wellbeing. The aim is to build self-esteem and friendship through artistic techniques, using art to work against loneliness as a result of language, cultural and ability barriers. The social enterprise supports people from a variety of different backgrounds, focussing on disadvantaged adult women immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. Focusing on women who came to Coventry and the surrounding area recently, and those who have been here for a long time, but who have experienced barriers to integration. Local authority, NHS and charities working with migrants’ commission and refer people onto in-person and online workshops. Grant funding supports materials and content development. Over the short period of the start-up, Chrysalis Craft Coventry CIC supported thousands of individuals suffering from loneliness, domestic abuse, stress, anxiety, depression, homesickness and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder because of life experiences with positive results. During the pandemic the workshops have proven invaluable, acting as a safe environment and an information and signposting service. Directing people to urgently needed services they could not reach due to language barrier or stigma caused by misinformation.

The Society offers a wide variety of online continuing professional development (CPD) courses in counselling skills and related topics, designed for counsellors, health and social care professionals, teachers, and others who work in a public-facing role. While the courses themselves are not a route to our Accredited Register, as we are an Accredited Register holder you can rest assured that the high standards we adhere to in the day-to-day running of the Society are reflected in the quality of the courses on offer. The courses that the Society has published will focus on counselling and mental health skills for public-facing practitioners. They are intended to help public-facing professionals with their day to day work through increased knowledge and confidence. Often public-facing professionals find themselves in situations where psychological, emotional or mental health issues have a direct impact on the kind of care they would like to offer. Our courses have been designed to help practitioners from all public-facing backgrounds navigate sensitive topics with confidence, ensuring the public feels listened to and supported. In addition to basic counselling skills, we also have courses designed to examine specific situations such as bereavement, self-esteem, and working with adult survivors of child abuse. I am an Addiction Specialist, an Author, Speaker, TV, Radio and Social Media personality, and respected pioneer in Addiction Consulting. I deliver life-changing material and personal expertise to shift clients towards a more fulfilling future. Through gaining personal empirical knowledge, I incorporate this experience along with research, training, and vocation in guiding those afflicted by trauma and addiction. The complexity of human behavior requires a non-prescriptive approach; I transform people's lives through mentally disbanding the cause of their pain. As a proponent of breaking free from 'the madness', I have successfully liberated numerous individuals from 'hell' so that they can lead fruitful and inspiring lives. My creation, The 'Buxy Recovery Process', will liberate thousands of people from their burdens. I am a recovered addict, an abuse victim, and above all a survivor. I talk candidly about my experiences to help others liberate themselves from the attachments to any addiction- food, drugs, sex, technology and more. My approach incorporates modalities that identify the subconscious reasons for the undesired behaviour, which reveals the path to healing and brings hope for a better future. My shows include Saf Talks, MensTalk -a Feel Good Factor TV show on SKY Showcase 192, and a show on Spirituality Gone Wild. I have also co-founded Non-Profit Charities, which has earned me the following awards: Global Humanitarian Award Global Change Maker (LOANI & World Leaders Association) MENTORx Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Award (Award of Honor) Breakthrough International Bible University An honorary Doctorate Degree in Humane Letters Black Blazer Award "Gold Men's Award for leadership, excellence and achievement" Worldwide Leaders Association & LOANI "An agent of change recognition" Institute of Global Professionals "Certificate of Appreciation" Prof Amb. AbdullGhani Yahya Al-ebarh "Peace Medal" My new book, Out of the Madness: A Message of Hope has been published in March 2021. This autobiography is written to help others wake up out of their unhealthy habits to see their gifts.

Concrete Rose Collective

concrete rose collective

Concrete Rose Collective is devoted to providing first-class support that responds to the needs of young people particular in the fields of accommodation and education. You can find out more about our vision and background below. Our vision Every young person living life to the full with the foundations and opportunities to flourish. Our mission To provide accommodation and support that enables young people to step into a better future. Current offer We provide supported lodgings for young people (including care leavers, those at risk of homelessness, unaccompanied asylum seekers and young parents). These are nurturing places, in host homes, that include exceptional levels of wrap-around support (for hosts and young people) and are founded on a therapeutic approach that is based in research and understands trauma. We do this generally, though not exclusively, through hosts from local churches. Our history The roots of Concrete Rose Collective CIC can be traced back long before its establishment as a Community Interest Company in 2020 and in particular to 20 years of support for marginalised young people by our founder Mike Farrington (see ‘Our People’ for more details). Increasingly evident over this time was the need to proactively respond to two priority areas essential in enabling young people to thrive: Accommodation: The need to provide safe, loving, and professionally supported accommodation options particularly in the area of semi-independent living enabling young people to successfully navigate the transition from home (or care) to adulthood. Education: The need for educational provision that focusses on character and emotional intelligence and where a range of talents and aspirations can be expressed and nurtured. The name comes from a poem and an audio extract from the hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur. Elements of both are written below and eloquently capture the tremendous resilience and tenacity that many young people have already shown in overcoming traumatic starts to life that may include abuse, childhood trauma and community dysfunction. It also echoes the notion that such trauma inevitably creates hurt, scars and the odd prickly spike but that, with some key ingredients, the outcome can be something of striking beauty that defies the past, points to the future, and beautifies the world. Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete Proving nature’s laws wrong It learned to walk without having feet Funny it seems but by keeping its dreams it learned to breathe fresh air Long live the rose that grew from concrete when no one else, even cared You try to plant somethin in the conrete, y’knowhatImean? If it grow, and the and the rose petal got all kind of Scratches and marks, you not gon’ say, “Damn, look at All the scratches and marks on the rose that grew from concrete” You gon’ be like, “Damn! A rose grew from the concrete?!” You see you wouldn’t ask why the rose that grew from the concrete had damaged petals. On the contrary, we would all celebrate its Tenacity. We would all love it’s will to reach the sun. Our ethos Concrete Rose has at its heart a Christian ethos. We do not impose these beliefs on others and we support, employ and work alongside those of all faiths and none. Our Christian ethos informs the ways in which we work and creates a culture which values the individual (and recognises their immeasurable worth and innate talents), empowers others and demonstrates a love and commitment that is long-term and resilient. We desire to see the young people we support live life to the full, realise their God-given potential and positively shape their future and the world around them. Make a difference Last year 121,000 young people (16-25) in the UK were homeless or at risk of homelessness. You could make a difference. Give young people the opportunity to build a firm foundation for the future by becoming an approved host through our supported lodgings scheme, ‘Room to spare’. We provide training, 24/7 support and start-up bursaries. Find out more by downloading our ‘Information for hosts’ brochure.
