The Arts Society Cotswolds, founded in 1969, is an active and friendly society based in the beautiful Oxfordshire town of Burford. Our meetings are held ten times a year at 10.50am on the second Wednesday of the month at the Warwick Hall, Church Green, Burford, OX18 4RY. You are invited to join us for fascinating lectures, special interest days, social events and visits to places of outstanding interest. The top quality expert speakers, recommended and approved by The Arts Society, deliver illustrated talks on a wide variety of topics: architecture, artists and designers, china, glass, painting, music, furniture, sculpture, jewellery and much more, ranging from prehistory to modern times. For those who enjoy hearing about a subject in greater depth, we have Special Interest Days which allow the speakers more time to share their specialist subject. If you would like to explore further afield we regularly organise visits to museums, country houses and gardens and places of historic and artistic interest, often by coach.

Cheshire Woodworking was established in 2012 by Ciarán Ó Braonáin, a furniture designer and woodwork teacher from Dublin, Ireland. Ciarán’s passion for hand-crafted woodwork has inspired beautiful pieces for shooting, home and hospitality for clients across Cheshire and the UK. From his workshop on the Sandstone Trail in rural Cheshire, Ciarán specialises in combining hand-crafted techniques with new, precision technology thanks to the EU LEADER Fund investment. Seeking out the finest raw materials, including high-grade woods, feathers and leathers, he works closely with clients to understand their ideas and uses his expertise to create unique pieces tailor-made to their requirements. Ciaran's expertise was recently called upon by the BBC for their latest hit television series, Jay's Yorkshire Workshop. The show, on BBC2, involved Ciaran and two other experts, along with their two apprentices, designing and creating bespoke wooden gifts for individuals or organisations nominated for their acts of kindness in the community.

Born and raised in Birmingham, Tom has always been obsessed with making things. This obsession continued right through school and on to London where he studied furniture making. It was whilst in London his unusual style prompted his teacher to suggest he study sculpture. Taking his teachers advice after completing the year, he moved back to Birmingham and began his sculpture degree in Wolverhampton commuting daily before opting to move to West Wales School of Art - where they teach the fascinating process of bronze casting - to complete his degree. After completing his degree, Tom once again moved back to Birmingham where he continued his sculpture practise alongside working with family to further refine the carpentry and woodworking skills he learnt in London before setting up by himself a few years ago. The relatively recent decision to start offering courses came about almost by chance. The positive experience Tom had in West Wales ignited a desire to want to teach his skills to others – something that became even more apparent after taking on a couple of apprentices. However, with business being so busy it wasn’t until the apprentices highlighted the lack of woodworking courses available in the Birmingham area outside of full-time college or university courses. It was at this point Tom realised that this would be a great opportunity to give those interested in woodworking a way in without having to commit full time.

I love what I do and do what I love. I’m far from the square, the rectangle, the circle, or the triangle- I AM the SQUIGGLY in the world of working with kids of all ages. I am one of those people that specifically thinks differently than most- and I like to think that that’s okay since I work with lots of kids that are different- cause I think all kids are different… I am not the person who buys a piece of swedish furniture and opens the instructions- I’m the one who says ‘let’s see how this goes together’ tool-belt diva type-who goes at it- without the manual. People say I have this way with kids, one parent nick-named me ‘the kid whisperer’. Anyone who knows me will tell you I don’t whisper, but I think my way, is just the way I am- I think kids want something our society does not often provide: a genuine, authentic, real person who asks,

The Holgate Academy buildings are split over two secure sites, Nabbs and Hillcrest, surrounded by large areas of green space and playing fields. Each building houses faculty areas with dedicated classrooms, a library, a careers resource centre, sport hall, IT suites and specialist art, product design and technology facilities. Our modern, purpose-built science block offers superb space for the teaching of biology, physics and chemistry with fully equipped labs. The area at our Nabbs site, known as ‘The Wells’, houses our renowned art department with student artwork adorning walls and stairwells. Our new Accelerated Learning Centre accommodates students who require additional and specialist support to allow them to catch up with their peers before joining year group classes. By working with business partners, such as IKEA and J Tomlinson, the space has been fully kitted out with new decor, furniture and classroom resources. My career as a traditional craftsman started while I was a mature student at Aberystwyth University during 2000. During a chance meeting with Bob Shaw, a local woodland owner and craftsman we agreed that in exchange for a day's labour, Bob would teach me woodland management and traditional craft. Initially, I focused on making rustic furniture and field items such as cleft ash hurdles. Although I still occasionally turn items on a traditional foot-powered pole lathe, I now specialise in hand carving bowls, platters and spoons. THE CRAFT There are two characteristics that apply to all the work that I produce. Firstly, I follow traditional practice and use wood that has been locally sourced. All of my work is made from timber sourced from sustainably managed woodlands within 10 miles of the workshop. The trees have been felled as part of normal woodland management operations and not explicitly for the making of spoon or bowls. Consequently, the mix of species used can vary from year to year. However, the species that I most frequently use include sycamore, beech, cherry and other fruitwoods.

I started Wisteria Workshop seven years ago selling original pieces of reupholstered furniture and cushions at markets and independent shops. As my confidence grew I took on commissions which is now the core of my business. I also started having small upholstery classes taught in my workshop beside the Wisteria. Covid put a stop to them and I haven't started them up again yet. I am very passionate about saving our precious resources from waste and land fill. We really don't need to buy new every time as there are so many beautiful chairs that just need some work and they will last for many more years. In 2020 a new side of my business has developed in partnership with another recycling independent. We are reusing fabric and adult clothes and creating original quality children's clothes...Kinder Garments. 2021 brought another exciting challenge to my business East St Emporium. |A collective of over 30 Makers and Designers within eight shops. I share a shop and directorship . We opened in September and are working hard to spread the word about such a beautiful shop.
