Brighton,

No Deaf child should be left behindOur Vision A world where Deaf, hard of hearing, deafened and DeafBlind children, young people and adults are able to live safely and without fear of abuse and exploitation. Our Mission With safeguarding at the heart of all we do, DeafKidz International aims to respond comprehensively to the protection, health, wellbeing and access to education needs of deaf children, young people and adults worldwide. Why our work is needed Deafness is the third largest disability globally with 466 million deaf people worldwide yet it remains the least resourced. The abuse and exploitation of deaf children is endemic, with deaf children three times more likely to be abused than hearing children, but safeguarding and protection networks lack the means to support deaf survivors/victims of abuse and deaf children at risk. Deaf children face barriers to accessing services and support from teachers, social workers, police workers, medical staff and the justice system, often due to the lack of deaf awareness and resources available to these professionals who are unable to effectively communicate with or support the needs of deaf children. In low-middle income countries often children are not even diagnosed as being deaf which exacerbates risk of abuse and prevents them from accessing vital support they need. DeafKidz International seeks to address the vital gaps in meeting the safeguarding and protection needs of deaf children and reducing risk and vulnerability while supporting deaf children, young people and adults to lead their fullest lives ensuring equal and rightful access to health, education and employment as their hearing peers.

According to Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, children have the right to have a say on all matters which affect them. This includes their education. When children and young people are involved in decisions about their learning, they become active participants in their education and they are more motivated. Alternatives in Education - Parent's Voice Parent Voice When parents are involved in their children’s education, children do better. Research has found that parental engagement is one of the most powerful levers for school improvement. When schools listen to their parents and work with them as genuine partners they achieve the best outcomes for children and young people. Alternatives in Education - Teacher's Voice Teacher Voice Teachers are professionals and yet many feel that they have little say over their work. They are told what to teach and when and how to teach it by a government (in England) which dictates the content of the curriculum and exerts a stranglehold over schools through the testing and accountability framework. When teachers have greater autonomy to respond to the needs of the children and young people they work with, children do better. Alternatives in Education - School Community Voice School Community Voice When school leaders listen to their students, their teachers and their parents they are better able to meet the needs of the communities they exist to serve. When responsibility for the school’s vision, values and direction is shared, schools are strengthened by such collaboration and empowered to be their best.

We are a dynamic and expanding Multi Academy Trust currently comprising nine schools, which serve the families of children in and around Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. Our purpose is to provide an inspiring education for our young people that supports them to reach their full potential and become well rounded, successful citizens. Through our common purpose and values, we offer an outstanding curriculum that allows our young people to develop both personally and academically. We do this by inspiring pupils through inspired teaching. We empower young people to realise their potential and surpass their own expectations from Early Years to Post 16, imparting the knowledge, skills and behaviours to ensure they are fit for the future. Our all-through schools network enables the ideal transition between phases of education, supporting high levels of progress and inclusivity. At the same time, all our schools have an independence that allows them to best serve their communities, supported by delegation of a range of powers to our local governing boards. As a growing Trust we are supporting our schools to excel through a strong central team, in addition to Trustees and Members who offer a variety of experience and expertise. By working with employers and higher education providers we enrich learning opportunities and secure competitive destinations for pupils when they leave our care. We focus on on-going evaluation and improvement, collaborating between schools and drawing on expertise both within and external to the Trust to ensure the best education, professional development, and value for money.
