The spirit of the Centre’s aims has remained unchanged for over 100 years: Swarthmore seeks to inspire lives through friendly learning within a commitment to equality of opportunity Swarthmore is a centre for lifelong learning, community projects and family learning sessions as well as the courses and activities. Our main aim is to encourage people who want to learn but might not feel comfortable in more formal educational institutions. We work on a friendly, human scale. Many volunteers currently support the Centre’s work, and we welcome their contributions of time and energy. The Centre was founded by members of the Quaker movement in 1909 with the aim of including and involving people in learning activities and making sure that people were treated with equality and respect. Two members of the Society of Friends remain on our democratically elected ‘Council’ of Trustees, made up of Centre members and representatives of community organisations with shared aims. Swarthmore is a not-for-profit registered charity, and a company limited by guarantee. Our Grade II Listed Building has a fascinating history and is made up of six four-story terraced houses with additional dance and art studios to the rear. We have specialist facilities for pottery, jewellery, stained glass and sculpture, and the atmosphere is intentionally homely and informal. We also work within the local community on negotiated projects, including arts and ‘Skills for Life’ programmes. Many groups and individuals make use of the Centre as a community resource, providing facilities for a wide variety of local groups. Swarthmore attracts a social mix of people who come to the Centre because of their shared interests in learning rather than their background. We offer room hire at competitive rates, and welcome the public to use our café facilities. Starlight Academy is a dance and performance school based at The Dance Mill, a purpose built dance and fitness centre in Guiseley, Leeds, founded in 2008 by Melanie Hadfield-Walker and Christine Cade. We offer a full range of classes, helping to build confidence, strong dance technique and training for the stage. We have classes suitable for all age groups, from pre school to young adult. Exams can be taken in tap and modern though the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) syllabus classical ballet through the Associated Board of Dance (ABD) syllabus. Acro exams are offered through Acrobatic Arts, and Musical Theatre and Contemporary exams with ABD. Cheer classes following BGU. We are an accredited Acrobatic Arts school, offering Acro classes from age 5 with Miss Mel, who is one of only 5 UK Acrobatic Arts examiners and course conductors, or Miss Christine who holds her module 2 Acrobatic Arts qualification, or Miss Alison who holds her module 1 AA qualification. Other classes include Commercial Jazz, Musical Theatre, Singing, Contemporary, Lyrical, Showstars, Ballet Tots and Funky Monkeys, our specially designed Pre-school program.

I tend to think of myself working with the whole person rather than with problems or issues but I have experience in supporting people with a variety of challenges, for example: Recovery from trauma (including childhood trauma), bereavement and loss, transitions, limiting beliefs, addiction and compulsive behaviour, depression, anxiety, relationship challenges (including toxic relationships), persisting pain, ADHD, OCD, problems with sleep and spiritual issues. Getting ‘back on track’ and/or finding the way forward that feels right for you. Developing a greater sense of peace, ease, well-being and resilience. Cultivating a harmonious relationship with oneself and arising thoughts, feelings and emotions. Learning to listen to and trust intuition and discern between conflicting inner voices. Developing trust in oneself and in life. I aim to create a relationship that supports people to connect to themselves, their wholeness and the path that is right for them, as a unique individual. The association became a company registered by guarantee in September 2007 and a registered International Charity in February 2008 with Board of Directors appointed to run the organisation. The charity’s vision is to empower future generations and is commitment to improve the quality of life for young people to fulfill their potential and to make a positive contribution to their communities. AYDA is a registered charity working for the benefit of all young people including those with additional needs and their families. AYDA embraces cultural diversity and health issues, focusing on FGM and parental care by raising awareness between ethnic groups to build bridges across communities. AYDA is managed by a board of trustees and our services are delivered by sectional trainers and volunteers. AYDA provides training opportunities, employment enhancement training, recreational activities and intervention services for all. AYDA works together with other voluntary organizations, local government departments, statutory authorities and other independent bodies.

We literally make space for people and organisations involved in craft, through a programme of workshops and experiences that are co-created with community partners and through consultation with local people. Our specially tailored projects inspire, challenge, skill-up, engage and build new audiences for the sector. They have lasting local impact, and are often transformational for participants. Working in collaboration with local charities, essential need services and community groups we are inclusive to all, making space for a thriving, creative community. We offer both first-time experiences of craft and work with those who want to take their skills to the next level. We enable people to develop new ways of thinking about craft and experience first-hand the important presence of craft in everyday life. Raising the profile of craft in all its forms, we work with local and national arts organisations, contributing to debate, supporting makers and providing opportunities. Through our outreach projects, we work with partners including schools, children’s centres, family learning environments and retirement homes.

I have been dancing my whole life and teaching a wide range of ballroom and latin dances (with a specialisation in salsa) for over twelve years. I am certified and trained by Arthur Murray in the US and have experience teaching children, teenagers and adults of all levels. I have been involved in teacher/student competitions, performed at all kinds of events and won several teaching awards. I specialize in simplifying what is needed for each style of dance to look and feel natural, so that normal people without any dance experience look and feel good on the dance floor very quickly. I can teach ANYONE. Although I love teaching groups, hen parties, classes at weddings, birthday parties and other special events, I find that private dance lessons are the fastest and most satisfying way for people to learn to dance well. I have had many talented students, howeverI particularly enjoy working with people who’ve never danced before or who have struggled in the past. I enjoy finding a way to take ANYONE and get them to a level of dance they never thought possible.

Hi, I’m Susie and I deliver personal, professional one-to-one and group tuition for adults online via Skype and Zoom for English (ESL), French, Spanish and Italian.  I have been teaching since 2013 and is my full-time job.  I am passionate about languages and I absolutely love sharing my joy for languages with others! Whether you want to brush up on your holiday phrases, pass an exam or move abroad, I can help.  Regardless of your language level (or lack thereof!), I will coach you to reach your potential and maximise your results, while having a great time learning. As a former student of the Open University, I fully understand the challenges of studying solo and of juggling work, study and personal life. I like to think of myself as a personal trainer for languages; I will be your guide, show you how to achieve great results, but I can’t do the work for you. You get out what you put in; being able to set aside time to study or incorporate your learning into your daily life will be just as important as your lessons.  During your first lesson, we can discover your current level or start from scratch if we need to, as well as create a learning plan tailored to your skillset and interests. It’s never a problem to adapt our plan to cater for Specific Learning Differences or personal preferences, so please do share your learning preferences with me; you can have confidence that I am never, ever going to laugh or be disappointed in your level.  My experience has taught me that confidence is by far the biggest obstacle on the road to learning a language, not aptitude, as you may think or may have been told in the past. I will be there to support you every step of the way on the journey, so you can stop worrying right now about not being good enough. Stop comparing yourself to others; you are unique and the only thing you need to focus on is your own journey.  I have a wealth of experience in exam preparation, in particular for IELTS & Cambridge FCE & CAE exams for English and GCSE & A-level for French & Spanish. Most of my sessions over the years have been delivering tuition to one or two students at a time, however I have run sessions for groups of up to 15 adults. Included within the price, you will receive exclusive access to all of our online teaching materials – accessible during your lessons and 24/7 for self-study to support your learning. I am a full-time tutor, so I offer very flexible hours for my tutoring services and I always endeavour to reply to all enquiries/ correspondance as soon as possible. I work as an independent tutor, as I like to guarantee you consistency, reliability and commitment to you.  Subjects taught: - French & Spanish: KS3, GCSE, iGCSE, A-level (Spanish only) and adult tuition (beginner & intermediate). - English as a Second Language (ESL/ ESOL students): All levels, including preparation for the following exams: Cambridge FCE, CAE, PET, IELTS General Training and Academic, PTE academic and ESOL access exams levels 1-3.  Since 2020, I have been teaching beginner Italian.  I have a competent level of Italian, including a strong understanding of the grammar, which I use with my Italian friends and when travelling in Italy.  If you are looking for beginner Italian for personal interest, conversation, casual use and travel, I can definitely help.  I do not have any official qualifications in Italian, however my background in romance languages (Italian is a Latin-based language which, broadly speaking, I find to have a very similar vocabulary to Spanish with the grammar of French!) and my methodical nature means I would ensure that every lesson is thoroughly planned and carefully checked; I would never teach you anything I am unsure of, as this can be greatly detrimental.  I am not available to help with exam preparation for Italian or to teach more advanced levels.  My lack of qualifications in this subject and the fact that I am not fluent are the reasons that Italian lessons are offered at a lower rate per hour than my other subjects.     What you can expect: A flexible approach & lessons tailored to suit you.
