At the Yoga Village our ethos is inclusive and independent. There need be no barriers to practising yoga and so our classes welcome everyone, young and old, people with medical conditions, people who have practised yoga for years and people who are completely new to it. The Yoga Village began when we – a couple of yoga teachers – moved to Nottingham in 2005. We are now known throughout the city for our wide-ranging antenatal and family-centred yoga classes, which includes pregnancy yoga, birth workshops, postnatal classes, parent and toddler groups, kids’ yoga and mini retreats for mums. We love and value these classes immensely and believe that they are able to provide deep support for women and men through the intensity of early years’ parenting. We’re delighted that hundreds of friendships have been born out of these classes. We are also experienced and highly qualified teachers of general yoga classes for adults. We started out as general yoga teachers and have taught for two decades. Our style of yoga is essentially restorative and meditative with a focus also on physical practice and health. This style and training is the underpinning of all our classes and in particular gives us the tools to work with a broad range of students. We have run specialist classes for people who have suffered strokes, for prisoners, for people with ME, MS, addiction and more. Our general classes are for anyone interested in a style of yoga that is relaxing and holistic. The somatic (body) awareness practised can lead to a transforming relationship with our bodies which can gradually free us from old patterns (physical and mental) leading to more resilience (eg from the effects of stress) and improved mental and physical well-being. As teachers we’ve been fortunate enough to spend over twenty years training with a much loved senior teacher and in ashrams. When we started teaching, yoga wasn’t the big business it is today – with quick teacher-training courses and multiple franchises. We have been blessed to experience and value depth of training, long term commitment and a sense of integrity which honours the subject of yoga. Yoga means union: this can be union with ourselves, with our friends and family, and with our community and planet. Simple yoga techniques can help us live a healthier life that is more balanced and harmonious.

Aikido is a modern defensive Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba, referred to by many as O’Sensei (Great Teacher). Its emphasis is placed on spherical movement to create dynamic and explosive techniques that render an attacker harmless. Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury. It operates on the principle or tactic of blending with an attacker's movements for the purpose of controlling their actions with minimal effort. The Aikido practitioner does not rely on muscle strength but concentrates the power of the whole body onto the weak point of an opponent, forcing him/her to cooperate using his/her own force and momentum. This attribute defines Aikido's effectiveness and beauty as a martial art. Several approaches to Aikido have evolved over the years. Today Aikido is found all over the world in a number of styles, with broad ranges of interpretation and emphasis. However, the core essential principles of the martial art remain consistent. WHY PRACTISE AIKIDO? Aikido is more than simply an efficient method of self-defense. In practice, there are various facets of Aikido - the power of focus and concentration of energy; the concept of blending and unified non-resistance; the awareness of self and others. Traditionally, Aikido is a form of Budo – a “martial way”. Unlike other arts, Aikido technique can be applied at varying levels of severity, from the most gentle controlling techniques to the most severe countermeasures. Thanks for finding me here. I’m a self-experimenting author, speaker and wellness advocate, but it wasn’t always that way… On October 1st 2012 I sat in a hospital waiting room staring at a white notice board. When I’d arrived, the letters had been visible, but over time they’d started to fade. Punctuation marks dissolved, as if wiped off by a zealous cleaner. Every blink washed away more of my sight. Within 72 hours I was blind and paralysis had snaked up my body, leaving numbness in its wake. Losing two of my senses was terrifying and I didn’t know if I’d see my children again. For a while I lost connection with the outer world and my future was uncertain. Slowly my visual system rebooted, but the world didn’t look like it should. Grey wispy shapes swirled and eerie lines jiggled on the horizon. None of it made any sense. Over time I listened to the more subtle cues my body transmitted and learnt new ways to adapt. Months later when I started to feel, rather than see, the colour red and when blue objects fizzed and spat like a lit sparkler, my curiosity was ignited. I set out on a mission to better understand the incredible resilience and healing power of my mind. It was a journey that led to collaborations with scientists, my first book, Patient H69: The Story of my Second Sight, a TEDx talk and then a second book, Finding My Right Mind: One Woman’s Experiment to put Meditation to the Test. Nature played a huge part in my year-long recovery, so in 2021 I co-founded ParkBathe, a citizen science, green health initiative in collaboration with Derby University. The project encourages people who are wellness sceptics to experience a 1-hour version of forest bathing in urban parks and is funded by the National Lottery. Forest bathing is simply walking mindfully in nature while absorbing the woodland atmosphere via the senses. As the project is part of a research study, walkers are invited to wear heartrate (HRV) monitors which record their stress levels before and after each session. Jackie and Terry Lawer run Capable Canines Cornwall. Terry has a fantastic wealth of knowledge in all things canine, having been involved in dog training for over thirty years. He and Jackie own three Border Collies and a Miniature American Shepherd. Jackie deals with all matters to do with running the business and its administration. She is an Agility Club Approved Instructor, as well as being a qualified teacher, who has taught in Secondary and Adult Education. Jackie currently competes with one of her collies in agility. Tarn is Grade 7: the highest grade achievable in UK. Tarn has competed at two UKA National Finals and Jackie has also competed at a KC ABC (anything but a collie) National Final with her crossbreed, Zeus, many years ago now! She is also bringing on a youngster, due to start competing in Grade 2 shortly. Terry competes with Exe in Grade 4. Both Jackie and Terry have been Agility Judges. Jackie is also a Scentwork UK Judge and Trial Manager, currently working Tarn at Level 5 and Dart at Level 2 in this discipline. Arena We are lucky enough to have the use of an excellent training venue in Shortlanesend. Access is really easy and only takes a few minutes from Truro in the south or the A30 in the north. The venue offers hard-standing for parking and a really large outdoor school. We are told it is 25 x 45 m but it seems even bigger! The surface is a sand and felt mix and stands up very well to all types of weather! Tai Chi Punch Although each style of Tai Chi Chuan has its peculiar features, the five styles of Tai Chi Chuan something in common, they are: With a calm mind the performer breathes naturally. In peace and ease the performer moves lightly, softly, slowly and equally. The performer moves harmoniously and in a balanced way. The performer moves like a circle–graceful and perfect. The motion is slow and steady and strong strength (yang) and weak strength (yin) can be used in motions mutually. Tai Chi Chuan has attracted attention internationally. It has special functions in promoting health and preventing illness. To help the performer to concentrate their mind and to make their motions coordinate with their breath, music can be played to accompany practice. Flow with the sound of the musical instruments. In following the rhythms of the music, practicing Tai Chi Chuan will relieve stress and benefit health. Crescent Kick (Shuang Pai Chiao) The name Tai Chi comes from the Taoist symbol the West calls yin (black) and yang (white). This Tai Chi symbol represents two balanced opposites: black and white, sky and earth, fire and water, masculine and feminine, moon and sun. Feminine is the black or yin. Masculine is light or yang. The yin side of Tai Chi is like yoga, moving meditation, or chi kung. The yang side is the martial art – the practical application of the movements – using your power. Most often the yang side of Tai Chi is not taught. The healing benefits without the martial application is the yin without the yang. Through the movements of Tai Chi, one can set the mind and body in balance. It is not easy to do. You want to make sure that for every movement in motion (yang) or at rest (yin) your body is moving together. Through Tai Chi training, you can learn more about yourself and you can feel calm and peaceful all the time. It is a kind of martial art, but it is a gentle martial art. It is not for attacking, but has powerful self-defense applications.
