Concern surrounding underachievement of young males was brought into sharp focus in 2007 by the independent REACH report. Sponsored by The Home Office, The Department for Communities and Local Government and The Department for Education and Families, the report explored the costs associated with the problems that can arise from a disadvantaged socio-economic background, in this case specifically for young black males. These costs are associated with over-representation in the Criminal Justice System and reduced gross earnings and taxes associated with educational underachievement. They are estimated at £808 million a year and could amount to £24 billion over the next 50 years if the underlying issues are not addressed. From a working-class background himself, Clive attributes his corporate career success to hard work and maintaining a positive attitude. A key finding of the REACH report was a lack of positive male role models, particularly black male role models, in the media and the lives of young men. Clive knows from experience that the socio-economic gap to success can be bridged – he has held a number of senior level HR positions, is a company director and was awarded an OBE in 2010 for his contributions to the REACH report and the workplace mediation industry. Thus his involvement in the REACH report, together with his own personal experience, has inspired the development of the Bridge Builders Mentoring Scheme.

We started work here in New Cross in the year 2000 when we were set up as St James Family Learning Centre by the Southwark Diocese Board of Education and the London Borough of Lewisham to address issues of inequality in education South London. Since then we have we have supported hundreds of families to have better chances in life by providing high quality early education and family learning activities. Over the years we have worked in partnership with Children’s Centres, local schools and other voluntary organisations to provide activities that promote lifelong skills and a love for learning. As a trauma focused therapist, Raquel established a counseling and consultant practice to help people work through their most challenging experiences and support the professional development of the next generation of future trauma focused clinicians. It's known that experiencing trauma can block the brain's natural way to recover from distressing events. Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life or safety that can leave one feeling overwhelmed and isolated and can impact the nervous system, resulting in a traumatic stress response. It's essential to utilize healing strategies that focus on the mind and body to heal from a traumatic experience. As such, Raquel trained in both EMDR and Somatic Experiencing® approaches. Raquel chose to specialize in EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing because it has been extensively researched and has demonstrated effectiveness in treating trauma or other distressing life experiences. EMDR therapy is designed to reactivate the natural healing process through alternating eye movements, sounds, or taps. As a SE™ Practitioner in Training, she integrates Somatic Experiencing® techniques into her practice. Somatic Experiencing® is a body-oriented approach to healing trauma and other stress disorders. The SE™ approach releases traumatic shock from the body, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma.
