Refuge In Literacy UK began when children’s author Anne Stairmand donated signed copies of her books to a local domestic violence refuge at Christmas 2020. The response was so positive she wondered if this would be the case throughout the UK, and so she spent the following January and February speaking to over 300 refuges in the UK asking whether authors donating signed copies of their books to their local refuges would make an impact. From the joy of receiving a personal gift, to the simple joy of reading, to the educational, emotional and self-improvement opportunities books can present – which in turn can create empowerment and self-esteem – it was clear these books would have an impact. Children will have a sense of value, worth, self-esteem … They will harness a willingness to read, to learn, to savour the process of reading, escapism and transformative powers of a book. — Thurrock Changing Pathways Essex, 2021 Refuge In Literacy UK is also aiming to address a lack of consistency in literacy resources and training by supporting refuges with reading strategy prompts which feed into the National Curriculum. Our pilot refuges, currently nine across the UK, will help trial these, and evaluations will help us refine and improve. Our teaching and research is closely linked to our impact and engagement activities and our staff and students are leaders and enablers of creative and cultural practice in the region, nationally and internationally. A key feature of the School of Arts and Cultures is that many of our staff and students have been, and in many cases continue to be, both academics and practitioners (e.g. musicians, artists, journalists, PR professionals and film-makers). Our musicians, artists and film-makers continue to perform and show their work on a world stage and this applies to our students too. For example, in 2017 our folk music students accompanied our Vice-Chancellor on a trip to China where they performed to great acclaim. Many colleagues from the School of Arts and Cultures work in co-productive ways with sectoral partners and to actively contribute to practice and policy making (e.g. making digital apps, co-creating exhibitions with curators, writing policy briefs for external bodies, investigating the UK’s live music industry, influencing national debates around media habits, the creative arts and cultural industries.) The result is that much of our teaching is extremely well-integrated from the outset with initiatives around employability and employer engagement, and our much of our research is readily translatable into impact and engagement work. Our staff and students organise an impressive range of public events (concerts, talks, performances and exhibitions) on a weekly basis which reach a diversity of audiences across the city and wider region. The School is also strongly engaged with issues of equality and diversity not just in terms of Athena Swan but also in terms of research and teaching specialisms of its staff and students. Colleagues are involved in broader initiatives such as the Martin Luther King celebrations, International Women’s Day, and the Centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918. Not only does this send healthcare costs and absence rates through the roof (not ideal), it does little to empower people to establish a healthy lifestyle that will benefit them, their family and the business both now and in the long term. Unhealthy lifestyles are having a debilitating impact on business performance. Exhausted, burnt out, unmotivated, stressed, lethargic, 'wired and tired' people at work are leading to snowballing absence rates and healthcare costs, and are killing morale, productivity and profits. rachP1-2.jpg It's clear to see the impact this is having on business - in 2019 alone UK businesses lost almost £92 million to poor health. And it's not just the business that suffers... when someone isn't looking after themselves - whether that's poor sleep, stress, nutrition, mobility or connection - their families, communities and wider society all miss out. In particular, burnt out, run down. detached leaders will have a huge knock-on effect across all areas of the business, both from a people and an operational perspective. But it doesn't have to be this way. 80% of chronic diseases are caused by lifestyle - and lifestyle is something we can change, together. Through 1:1 and group coaching, I take leaders and teams through a systematic lifestyle behaviour change framework that tackles eight key areas of health and wellness. The result? They're equipped with simple but alarmingly effective tools and techniques at their disposal to make positive, sustainable changes to their lifestyle. They take responsibility and action in supporting their long-term physical and mental health - and everyone benefits (except the healthcare providers, probably).

Superior Healthcare was founded in 2006 by Stewart Thorp, his father Charles and Sarah Richards in response to their experience of caring for Stewart’s brother and Charles’ son, Alex, who has an acquired brain injury. Alex was knocked from his bicycle whilst cycling on a country lane in 2001, by a motorist who had been using his mobile phone at the time of impact. Although sustaining only minor physical injuries, Alex suffered what proved to be a catastrophic blow to his head. Alex was rapidly transferred to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at King’s College Hospital, London, where he spent four weeks on life support. During a stay on the PICU and Lion Ward that would last almost three months, Alex had a tracheostomy and his breathing was managed by a ventilator. Whilst he was weaned from his ventilator, he continued to be fed via a gastrostomy tube well after his transfer to the Children’s Head Injury Service, based at Chailey Heritage in East Sussex. During a year-long stay at Chailey, Alex would learn to walk and talk again with the support of a team of support workers, nurses and healthcare professionals including physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and neurologists whilst a plan was made for his return to the family home. It was then that Charles and Stewart met Sarah Richards, the Registered Nurse who was tasked to recruit the team that would support Alex at home. In ensuing years, Charles, Stewart and Sarah worked alongside a team of healthcare professionals as well as solicitors and case managers to support Alex’s continued rehabilitation including his return to education and participation at Headway – an independent charity working to provide social rehabilitation to adults with an acquired brain injury. From their personal experience, Charles and Stewart identified the importance of a specialised care service that would bridge the gap between independent care providers and national organisations and in 2006, Superior Healthcare was founded with the objective of providing specialised services for people who have complex and long term health needs. Since then, we have worked with children, young people, adults and their families to provide twenty-four hour and respite care, which supports people during rehabilitation or to maintain their health, as well as providing a dignified service for people approaching the end of their lives. At Superior Healthcare, providing a high-quality service is a personal goal. Superior Healthcare works with Nursing & Residential Care Providers, Day Centres and Hospitals throughout Kent by offering a wide range of staffing connected services.
